P90s will ALWAYS be cool. Trouble is, most players aren’t cool enough to use them.
Great line ❤.
Dude's right, I tried one of these recently. Best neck in the store for me and those P90s were amazing, especially the neck pickup. I've never owned a guitar with P90s but the I've tried two recently, both gibsons, they're great. I wish I discovered them decades ago when I started playing, but I went through the 80s which meant super strats. P90s are my new favorites. Thanks for posting this.
I love that p90s are getting some love these days. I love their sound
Just got the Epiphone LP Special, which only comes in the TV yellow. This Gibson is now my dream guitar. So beautiful. Great review too. Now I’ll have to save up for both the Gibby and the Deluxe Reverb!
I have a few LP Specials with the wraparound one-piece bridge and they intonate very nicely with 9-46 Hybrid Slinkys.
I know we’re not talking 15 minutes ago, but I have an interjection. In late winter 2002, my favorite act in the Hudson Valley where I’m from, Perfect Thyroid, performed their going-away gig. Their guitarist at the time, Joe Brooks, was slinging a single-cut solid body loaded with P90s. Joe is a metalhead, and I was blown away (as were my ears) at the searing, explosive tone he got out of that monster plugged into his arsenal (I didn’t try to ascertain the make of guitar or amp he had). Though that appearance was in February 2002 and I’m commenting in November 2023, I’d say it otherwise qualifies that P90s in a single-cut solid guitar like the LP Special may not lose their place. Not if a scorching metalhead can make it tick in the context of a ska fusion act like a Perfect Thyroid.
Les Paul Special specials are my favorite guitars. I bought my 1st Special in 1999.
Yo he adquirido una, y ahora es mi preferida.tengo otras dos gibson.les paul.
Pero esta guitarra me tiene enamorado, es la Special TV yellow.
And I just discovered I had a ground wire that wasn't soldered and I used your close up of the wiring harness and fixed it thanks
Probably one of the best and most thorough demos I've seen of this guitar, and your playing is a kick to listen to. Nice chops. Thanks for posting!
Love mine - one of the few guitars that seems to have some mojo especially for the price
What a stunning piece of Mahogany, beautiful finish. I love the poker chip around the pick up selector. Thx for the clarification about the time frames and the double cut away vs the single cut away. Sounds great too. The P 90s sound both rich and crisp.
I just got mine in TV yellow!! it is a Rock Machine but even more than that. The P-90s can deliver whatever
you want and they clean up nicely with the volume rolled back. I have enough Custom Shop guitars so I
went for the USA version. I would recommend this guitar to anyone.
Fantastic guitar.! Simple, elegant, and raw all at once. The best 2 pickup P 90 guitar? Quite possibly!
Love your videos! Quick note: you can measure depth (e.g. the pickup height) more precisely with your caliper! You do this by resting the butt end of the caliper on the pickup surface, and then opening it up so the depth gauge stretches downward until it contacts the guitar body. No need to squint with the ruler! You could even measure other things like nut depth, fret height, etc. this way if you wanted.

That’s some fine playing, JOHN!
Absolutely love the bite of the P90’s through a Les Paul. You brought this bad boy to LIFE!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
a 'JR' with P-90's is an incredible axe. Thanks for the cool presentation.
I've always felt I could really dig a Special or a Junior. That one looks beautiful. If a person really felt they needed it they could add a compensated or adjustable bridge for intonation.
I have a 2000 model year Gibson P90 Special. Mine came with a tunomatic bridge. Basically the same setup as anything LP. My neck also has mini-trapezoid inlays. I've never understood these versions without a standard bridge.
@@chrisnealis4270 That sounds pretty damn cool. I don't get it either. I think it used to be to save on cost. Now it's a matter of nostalgia, I guess.
@@DrJeebles Part nostalgia, part cost savings, and marketing too. My 2004 double cut special has the tune o matic and that's what the new Beato signature is based off so they still do it if they want to. I think they went back to the wrap around tail pieces because people seem to want as close as possible as to what it would have had in the 50s.
Man I love that guitar. I need a P90 guitar in my life, and that color is screaming at me.
i have an 2011 gibson tribute lp with P 90's , great guitar , great sound , a keeper !
I have a 2020 Gibson Les Paul Special in Olive Drab. Easily one of my favorite guitars! Love your channel!
Yes! Vintage Cherry instead of that tired looking, everybody has one, TV Yeller.
The Cherry ones sound the best too! 🤘🏽
Love the tone , the Clean Sounds Where Really Serious and more better than a standard LP, really just loves them puppss, ty John and Zackb🤘
This guitar & its Epiphone counterpart are the perfect argumement to buy the Epiphone.
No only still cool, but always the coolest...
...NEXT UP: Epi Special vs. Gibson Special???
Yes, please
I have a Les Paul Special Tribute in Cherry as well as an Epiphone LP Special in TV Yellow. P90’s are my favorite pickups. (Full disclosure, I work for Gibson.)
Bonjour Randal,
I own much more expensive Les Pauls and other guitars and my Gibson USA TV Yellow LP Special is my favorite instrument I own. I did upgrade to an adjustable wrap bridge but stock other than that
Need to play with the neck pickup rolled off a bit. The tone changes completely.
I bought a 2003 "junior special" used with a repaired neck. Has the normal bridge and belly cut. Love it. Goes perfectly with my Standard and Telecaster.
Music city bridges completely changed my Gibson junior and special they were awesome before hand but had a little room for improvement the Music City Bridges and locking post elevated them beyond belief
No joke I'm getting this exact same guitar tomorrow thank you reverb and ups man
I love these even more than Les Pauls--- that is a Junior with a maple top and a slim neck. A friend has one ,which is the guitar I'm speaking of. Tried to buy it but no go...and I really understand it. Great video👍😍
It sounds absolutely outstanding...
Thumbs up like #367. I had a Worn Bourbin and found the Gibson finish wear real fast along edge with out binding. P90 are killer awesome.
Rhnx for making this channel ❤️ I've gotten alot of enjoyment on days I'm in to much pain to do much else. .bless you guys 🦅🦅🙏
You made it so clear, perfect review.
Sounds better than my LP Standard 60s lol!
The Les Paul Special us the best Les Paul Gibson ever produced...imo
How's the Gibson Special compare to the Epiphone Special?
Quick answer to title: Yes! More than ever.
Great Blues Guitar, I also like the sound of an SG....after all the LesPaul Standard isnt the only guitar.
Beautiful Guitar ! My next choice for a Gibson LP...Red too...Nice Raw sound especially that Silky smoothe neck pickup
F?*" YEAH they're still cool!!! I think they're cooler than the Les Paul with the humbuckers in it!!!
Very cool. My ‘05 SG Classic with P90’s is my favorite guitar.
Best Gibson you can get for the money. This LP Special is a monster guitar. And currentr TV Ywllow I have noticed they have gorgeous wood grain. The earlier ones the color is not as transparent.
Really enjoying your videos! Saved my pennies and got my TV yellow sp in '21 straight from the Gibby factory. Had to stake out the website at that time because availability was touch and go, but well worth every cent. My #1. Love the neck, the p90's, the slab, etc. It's a rock and roll machine.
Mine always puts a smile on my face. I absolutely love that guitar!!
nice 4example of p 90's and might i say you really have shown how good a tube screamer can light up an amp bonus good job. very cool
They are magic , I have a CS '55 Special
I truly like the sound of the p90s on the les Paul.. cool
Not only did I sub & like, I am commenting and will eventually watch all the vids.
I have a Gibson LP special tribute. Incredible guitar.
i bought one of these yesterday i was surprised by the weight of the case
Those P90's sounded a lot less shrill than others I've heard, particularly the neck and the middle positions. My first LP was a Gibson LP Special with 490/498 humbuckers, and that guitar absolutely rocks. I clicked on your ZZounds link to see how much it was and nearly fell off my chair! About fifteen years ago, my LP Special was $600!!
I feel like I can always tell which guitars are best because you're playing is better on the good ones
John….very nice playing of a stellar guitar…..nothing better on the planet for my $
Awesome demo and review....one of my favorite guitars that I own , I have one Gibson and two Epiphone's (including the bolt on Epi Special 1 that I told you about) keep up the good work !
I'm still waiting for my white special tribute w/P90's from Sweetwater, ordered last June and supposed to arrive in April. I suspect that will be the last sub 1K guitar Gibson will ever make.
I had a Gibson Les Paul Special some years ago. Maybe 12 years ago. I sold it and I don't remember why.
@PlayandTradeGuitars The dot inlay is in fact not standard on all years of the P90 Special. I have a 2000 model year and it came with mini-trap inlays. It was a very short run, and also has a standard bridge, not a wrap around. Funny enough, I have an '88 studio that has dot-inlays, not traps.
I need me some p90s. Really dig that guitar, was looking at the sg special but I might go this route instead.
That's my favorite Gibson guitar 🎸
Always liked these guitars.....great review.
Nice laddie! Well done mate!
Love this in tv yellow but I just feel the price is a bit ott given how stripped back they are. Like £200 less than a classic??? But 2-300 more than a studio? Not sure about that
Wish they had this color on the epiphone version
I love the tone of this guitar. Wrap around bridge is this an noticeable issue with intonation?
Sounds good! One of these days, perhaps......................
P90 Les Pauls are the best great vid
Out standing guitar, love a p90 your vids are brilliant cl UK.
Hey man,
I'm pretty new to your channel and I happen to have this very same axe I picked up new last year. The two things I changed on mine were the tailpiece and the tuners. The tailpiece I picked up via Faber is superior to this, it's very light but more importantly it's spaced up for a far better intonation while remaing a fixed wraparound. The intonation is spot on.
The tuners which came with this model really just felt cheesy and the gear ratio was real low as well. I had a set of locking Schallers which made a direct replacement as well without drilling or any nonsense like that so it's indeed all reversable 🤟
It's a fantastic guitar and the neck is indeed pretty chunky as well. Cool video and I dig your feeds man.
Tommy ~
Thanks for watching, those sound like ideal upgrades for sure! I appreciate the info🍻
Which Faber - the Wraptonate or Tone Bar?
@@BeantownToBigDwraparound.
I love the look of a Les Paul but got rid of mine because of that bump the top gives it and the body/neck angle. But this seems like the perfect LP with the P90's, a thinner body and neck parallel to the body. I'm just wondering how accurate the intonation can be with this bridge.
so how does it compare to the SG Special with the P90s? great channel btw.... cheers!
Who does the pleking? Certainly not any of my Gibsons unfortunately.
So basically a little bit more than a Les Paul Studio, interesting. I have a 65 Melody Maker that I put Lollar P90's in. Guess it's a poor mans Special but it's a 65 so different neck profile I'm sure. The Melody Maker has a lightning bridge. Wonder why they didn't use a compensated bridge for the Special. I've always loved a nice mahogany body. Bet I'd love a special.
Absolutely cool
very helpful!
Want one
My Les Paul Special, has a tunomatic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece. Strange
Cleans sounded muddier than I expected. Overall string articulation not what I was expecting either.
Yes
Anything with P90's is cool
Anything with P90'S is a winner in my book.
I have a Les Paul all mahogany but. It has a carved top. A beautiful guitar. It's a 60s neck. Not sure what model it is. Would you happen to know?
Sweet!
Yep you are a lp guy great sound
Does the neck have "shoulders"?
I can dig thiss,,,,looks like a Bob Marley sorta thing,
me, Epi '20 LP Jr which i love. This and a JT55PTR (SG S) i've had for years,,,,i'm set.'
btw,,,,,,ZZ is hit and miss....
Bought the Jr from SW,,,,packed like a treasure and hasn;t needed anything, thank goodness.
Get a chance to buy a IBG Epi Firebird as a 65 BD gift.
Look and only ZZZZX has one. Buy it.
Gets del'd and it's rattling in the outer box.
I should have refeused it but hoped for the best
Worked then didn't. Missed the return date.
Got it fixed locally, jack, switch , br pup rewire, set up. It rules now, $180.00.
Luckily the guitar was basically a gift.
This wouldn't happened with SweetWater.
You know what's sad? That Gibson doesn't release this guitar in the dark transparent blue that was used on the American Blues Hawk. That would be KILLER on this guitar! UGH! I have a red one...yawn.
Funny how years ago everyone just had to have the thinnest neck they could find. Now all the kids want the thick or baseball bat necks.
Almost 50k my fingers are now crossed. Lol
John and his Groovy Riffs..... i got a 2017 Epi custom LP with seymore duncan P-rails
p90 sound is really awesome thanks for your great Reviews
I'd adore one...same with a jr..I used to hate em until ni really nrealizednit was me as a guitar..that and an sg..thas me.. in. A nutshel..classic but weird and not as popular ad the flashier classmates who made more cash
Btw can you do a budget friendly amp review
compaired to the epiphone one how is it
clean is pretty thin, juice the amp
Still waiting for the giveaway sir ❤️
Are they putting P90's on them now? In the 90's Gibson put P100's on them. P90's were on the Junior.
You love the 50’s neck? I just ordered one of these online and was worried about the neck being too thick to play comfortably. And what were the ohms on those P90’s i missed that.
Yes I love the 50s necks, I'll have to rewatch for the ohms. Thanks for watching!
Does anyone know what happened to those Les Paul Special Tributes? They seem to be gone.
Yea unfortunately they're gone! No Gibsons under $1k anymore
