Mudlarking the River Thames with Nicola White - A very large Anchor!

- Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames in London - searching for pieces of London's past. Today I talk about perhaps one of my largest discoveries and lots of other bits and pieces that have been washed out by the tide.

So I'm sitting here on a Sunday morning watching political commentary videos feeling my blood pressure and anger rise when I see the notification of a new Nikki mudlark video. I immediately click on the video and feel my anger leaving and blood pressure returning to normal. So don't ever think you are not doing good in this world. Bless you dear and keep up the great work. Thames Mudlarking Searching for London's Lost Treasures is a great book that not only has fantastic photos of treasures, it is chronological so it really is a great read of the history, not just of England but the world. Nicola White has several contributions shown in the book. I think it would be a way to teach history in a way that young students would find as enjoyable just as did I at age 69. Thanks Nicola for the recommendation of this book.

wow your 'bird' is superb ... It really inspires me. I'm sitting bed bound in my hospital bed, once was training to be a classical dance, broke my back at 19 years of age, then an artist using a multiple pf mediums, now 60 but feel like a teenager. Now when I am up to it I crochet wire. I love hearing all your information you find out. A very large Anchor was intriguing ... perhaps the title for a storybook. I have recently purchased 4 mudlarking books. Nicola, thanks for being you. xx

That George the Third coin made me smile.
There is a chap here in the states, Green Mountain Metal Detector,(Vermont) who find George the First, second and third coins in hollow stone surrounded remains of colonial and other early period homes in remote parts of the Green Mountains.
These areas are often tree and brush overgrown , but with a detector and a keen eye reveal a lot of our ancestors histories here in the states.
There are also many buttons, apparently they were lost quite often.
Your Thames detecting also requires a keen eye, but covers a vastly larger section of History, three cheers for Londinium!
It amazes me how you focus in on things I would probably ignore. There is so much to see.

This video has been one of my favourites.The perfume stoppers remind me of Vivienne Westwood perfume tops.What I like is you putting in scenes between commentaries and finds.Gives the mind time to absorb what you have shown us.The cormorant of plastic was incredible..your the Banksy(pun intended)of art.So imaginative.You'll be the Clarice Cliff of Thames finds art and history.So wonderful.

Really enjoyed that. Eyes like a hawk. Every time you say, "see if we can find it" I always see anything but.
Might I make a suggestion regarding cleaning your buttons and some of the other items that you find? I have found this to be particularly effective in cleaning buttons and even coins that I find. Clean the item as much as you can with water and a soft brush. Heat hydrogen peroxide in your microwave for about 30 seconds (times may vary according the the amount of peroxide that you are heating, but just few seconds is enough). Drop the item into the heated peroxide and leave it alone. A few minutes is usually enough, but I usually leave the item in the peroxide until it has stopped or almost stopped fizzing. It is not going to damage the item any to leave it in. If necessary, reheat the peroxide and drop the item in again. I have found that in most cases one session is enough. It really does a nice job of bringing out the detail of the item. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You do an EXCELLENT job!

I enjoyed watching this particular video Nicola, and your efforts to clean plastic pollution as it brings me back to a particular connection my family had with the Thames. My grand-father was a Port of London Authority pollution expert in the periods either side of WW2 (when he was in charge of an anti-aircraft battery at London Bridge). I have pictures of him on the foreshore taking water samples, surveying the docks and testing the discharges into the river. He was there for 32+ years. So if you rummage around in the PLA archives, look out for (Capt) Leonard C. Betts.

An enjoyable little expedition! I liked the wildlife interludes-giving the swan her elevenses-she doesn't look like a hobbit! Your historical backgrounders in the wrapup are fun and informative. Last night I watched Richard's video collaboration with you. I always learn so much about pottery ancient and modern from Richard. He is always a master class on pottery. I liked the conversation. It looked like a fun outing for both of you.

(Some of the things I've picked up since watching mudlarking videos is a working knowledge of clay pipes, pottery, obsolete items and the names of British Kings and Queens from 1066 on.) I've always been heavily into history, but where I live in the states, I've had to be content with ebooks of scarce items, ephemera and a bit of salvaged dump items. London with the treasure trove of the Thames has been a delight to see, just for folks like you, Simon, Richard and others poking around in it and finding surprising things. (The best collaborative vids were when you, Bill, Simon and Nugget went to the hidden foreshore by boat. I have watched the vids associated with that several times they were so much fun.)

It's always lovely being taken mud larking with you Nicola. I sometimes see things when you zoom in to an object just off to the side and want to shout scan left or right ,but most times you miss it.
