I might argue he has just become one. The only time length is a factor in the calculation he has presented is if acceleration is a factor (which he failed to apply). If that is what he was going for then he failed in presenting those factors so people could check his work. He never gave travel distances or desire distances to achieve with in a set time frame.
Now I am willing to accept my wrongness if someone can answer this question: If light travels at 299 792 458 m/sec then how fast does a light pulse goes if I send it to a target 1000 m away, or even 200 m away?
If you say 299 792 458 m/sec, then why does the 6 m/s blade need to be 14,500 km for his speed of light (299 792 458 m/sec) blade? And how fast is it going across the cut at both the 100 km mark to 500 km mark of the blade. (I am ignoring the roundness of the surfaces he is cutting)
He just became a villain for bad science! But he could yet redeem himself! Maybe that's because I still like Kyle, that I say that!

I'm glad to see this video. The idea occurred to me many years ago, so to see it confirmed makes me happy.
    However...
Let's say you have two rigid rods that are a light-year long. One is stationary from your frame of reference. The other is parallel to the first, but it's moving toward the first one. They will collide. You're right at the midway point, a half a light-year from either end.
From your perspective, the collision will NOT be simultaneous along the length. The contact point closest to you will collide first. The farther away from you the rods are, the longer it will take for you to see the collision. The rods are curved, from your reference point. It will take a half a year for you to see the ends of the rods collide.
"Now" Is local. There's no such thing as absolute simultaneity. It doesn't even make sense to think of the second rod moving as a single inertial body, when it's a freakin' light-year long. What happens at one end takes a year, at best, to get to the other end.
Imagine you're a light-year long. What's going on at your feet is a year away from your head. You don't exist in one time zone.

You dont actually see either, you just see the photons that left those places, so you dont have ftl vision, you have microscopic vision, since you see particles. You dont actually see anything, you only detect light that attacks your eye-holes, and this light carries wave patterns that make your brain hallucinate about seeing things. As this takes a certain amount of time to process, what your consciousness perceives is a memory of sensory data which is not current anymore, so you cannot perceive the current moment, you see a few microseconds into the past.
When this data is saved into your memory, it is not saved as raw data, but largely as cultural and linguistical concepts which only exist as such, in your mind.

Hey Kyle, love the show! A couple of additions I'd like to make! (Not corrections this time, lol).
You had mentioned the expansion of the universe, and yes, you're right, there's nothing that stops space itself from expanding (or contracting, or both) at superluminal speeds. This fact is what led Mexican theoretical physicist Dr. Miguel Allcubierre to develop his Alcubierre Warp-Drive. (Yes, inspired by the star-trek warp-drive, but designed in real-world physicis.)
This particular construct works by creating a bubble of space-time around a vehicle, and moving that bubble along a wavefront of expanding and contracting space-time, at speeds that can exceed that of light. His original calculations for a spherical field required energy-levels exceeding the energy of all matter in the universe though, so that wasn't very helpful.
Later-on various physicsts (Such as Dr. Harold White from NASA's Eagleworks Laboratory) have managed to twist that sphere into a torus (donut) shape, and reduce the energy-requirements down to only the amount of energy in around 900kg (a little less than a tonne) of matter. Meaning this is actually potentially feasible, if not highly difficult, and implausible, just NOT impossible.
Granted in order to produce these bubbles, you'd need access to something that generates negative energy, perhaps some exotic form of matter, but we're not certain on that point. (However, given the expanding universe, negative energy is a thing we know HAS to exist, we're just not sure how... yet...)
Also the design as it is may have some issues when attempting to travel at superluminal speeds, such as instantly incinerating everyone and everything inside, destroying the universe through fluctuations in the vacuum energy state, and/or breaking causality in a time-related paradox. But those are small potatoes... lol.
And this is just one potential suggestion of actual superluminal (Faster Than Light) propulsion that works with physics as we understand them. There are also wormholes, quantuum-entangled teleportation, and also higgs-field inverters, but that's a bit too much to talk about in just a random comment.
But yeah, just sayin' that there really are some ways that we've thought-up where things can (and DO!) exceed the speed of light. It's a fascinating topic, and one worthy of the show!
Keep up the good work, my totally-no-a-supervillain friend!

    For the moon example:
That seems to be the general *intuition* of how this should work. However, imagine light moving like a stream of water. If you block a powerful hose with your hand that's pointing at a wall, say, 20 feet away... the water between the wall and the hose that left the pipe BEFORE the stream had been interrupted still reach the wall EVEN THOUGH your hand is still in front of the pipe. Try it!
The analogy works with the moon as well: if you, say, shine a laser or bright light on the moon (and for the sake of argument, assume it lands and reflects/absorbs, etc.) then moving your hand across the beam to block some of the light from reaching the moon would have the same effect as with our pipe analogy. Even though your hand (or whatever other implement) has already blocked some of the light, the moon still receives the photons that left just BEFORE the block was implemented. During the photon's travel and reaching the moon, the hand would still be there, and the photon would still bounce off.
This would therefore mean the speed of "dark" is roughly, if not exactly, the speed of light. Did... VSauce have a video on this?

What I understood from that example is that if you were to say, have a spotlight that is illuminating an area, let's say 1000 times larger than the spotlight itself. If you were to pass your hand in front of the light for 1 second, the resulting shadow would also exist for 1 second, except passing over a much larger area, effectively moving 1000 times the speed of your hand in this case. Its not about the travel from source to target, its about how the target appears when it gets there.

@@dovahkat9635 The problem with that is that the light would be diffused in a cone shape, so not only would the surface area of the object be 1000 times larger, but so would the surface area of your hands shadow, therefore nothing in this example is moving relatively faster than light.

Yeah Kyle, we've all read Nick Herbert's book; 'Faster Than Light: Superluminal Loopholes in Physics.' before. Nice presentation of basically all the best parts of the book. I think you deserve a 'SuperNerd' or breaking this down even further than he did for us plebians. Herbert and Kaku got some chops when it comes to making string theory and superluminal quantum phenomena palatable. You're like their internet successor in a way, making it fun.
