- A tabletop look at the Mesa, Arizona made @cz_custom A01-LD vs the Swiss made @PHXPhoenixAG Phoenix Redback. This video was highly requested by you the viewers so here we go. Both are incredible pistols and you cannot go wrong with either. If you own either of these, what are your thoughts? Which would you pick and why? I make my choice at the end of the video.
Thanks to The Attic Imports, The Sportsmans Loft and to Chris for helping out with this video.
Thank you for stopping by and God Bless.

Your camera quality is far better than some of those popular guntubers. ❤
Thank you very much. I appreciate that!
Thanks for sharing two beautiful pistols, either one of which is beyond reach for most of us.
+Rider’s-Range you are welcome. Both pistols are outstanding. Thank you for taking the time to watch.
Thanks very detailed review of gorgeous 2 guns so now I know name for my BD gun-Redback
Thanks for watching!
First thanks for listening to your audience suggestions me been one of them. With my champagne tastes and
my beer pocket I’ll be buying the CZ I’m sure that when you take them to the range both will dance very well . Excellent video 👍👍
You are welcome and thanks for watching. They both have been to the range many times. Can’t go wrong with either one. Both fantastic pistols. The Phoenix remains my choice.
Great Help, i might have to get both as well
That Redback is truly a piece of art. One beautifully made pistol.
It truly is. Thank you for watching! I appreciate it very much.
Very nice comparison! Congrats on very nice firearms! 👍
Thank you and I appreciate you watching!
Nice review. Thanks!
Thank you for your kind words and for watching. I really appreciate it!
@@MDpolo You're welcome. A pleasure.
Nice video on 2 great pistols!
Thank you very much!
Great video.
Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
The Ultralight Redback's slide is NOT aluminum. Their website is a little confusing, but by "ALU/ALU" they mean both halves of the frame are aluminum. There is no centerfire pistol whose slide is aluminum, as the metal is simply not suitable as reciprocating mass for the force of anything more powerful than a .22 Short.
Great vid otherwise!
Phoenix arms are Amazing not the easiest gun to find but it's a buy once classic Swiss heirloom. Thanks for showing a beautiful set of fine pistols.
They sure are spectacular. You are welcome and thank you for watching!
Just beautiful pistols. I love what you did to your CZC. I’m a CZ fanboy so I’m biased. I really am envious of both. Paying more than 2k for a pistol is hard for me to justify. But I own a $7,000 rifle when all in so who am I to judge.
Thank you. I’d love to see your 7k rifle! Make a video on it. Thanks for watching.
When I think of the 9mm pistols I've bought and sold trying to find one as nice as the Redback I've already paid for one and then some.
Good point. So true. Thank you for watching.
Great video. Would love to see a comparison of their internals
Yea, perhaps I’ll venture there. Difficult to do from behind a camera without scratching them. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Was considering the A01, but now will also consider the Redback.
Not for competition, just want a great pinker.
The Redback is a work of art. Thank you very much for watching.
@@MDpolo when looking in the Attic website, could not help but think that they looked very similar to my Sphinx SDP, specially the Fusion. After watching your videos, now I know why.
In another video by someone else, they claimed that the recoil impulse flips the barrel up way too much, due to the bore axis being way too high as compared to CZ. Is that so?
I find it to be quite the opposite. It’s a tremendously flat shooting pistol. However, the issue of bore axis has never affected me.
Great video once again, thank you very much. One slight remark; the CZ is SAO whereas the Phoenix is D/A. I own a SAO Phoenix and I guarantee you the triggerpul is way better than the S/A trigger from the D/A version you have.
Love to see some accuracy testing!
Thanks for the comment and kind words. I would love to get my hands on a SAO Redback!I appreciate you watching.
@@MDpolo I think we can make that happen - How about a Phoenix Ultralight with an SAO trigger?
The CZ is SA/DA. The video makes reference to this at the 6 minute mark I also own this pistol.
MrWicked98 you’re right. But I would love to see a double action pull with that straight trigger.
+Erik Lehner I’m sure that would be amazing.
I have 2 A01 LDs. One in 9mm and other in 357 Sig. Love them, had the opportunity to fire my buddies Phoenix Redback and wow! It is a great gun and definitely competes with the A01 LD. Was a hard comparison to do and had to put many rounds down range to compare. Difficult choice, but my A01 LDs beat out the Redback, but not by much.... The Redback is definitley would be a awesome substitute! Both are phenomenal guns!
Does the long slide on the a-01 have a sluggish cyclic rate?
@Richard W not at all, it's so smooth...
@@Denvco1 Right on, I'm trying to decide to pick up a fairly used optics ready one for $1900. Has lots of wear, so I'm thinking of sending it to get hard chromed.
@@richardw2801 they are awesome. I have one in 9mm and a custom ao1 ld in 357 sig....absolutely unbelievable
@@richardw2801 1900 is a bit much for a lot of wear...
Both very sweet pistols! Hard to imagine you had to upgrade the Custom A01-LD trigger. Living in America who could service the Phoenix Redback or provide parts? CZ Custom shop is 12 miles from my house so thats a huge advantage. I have CZC's SP 01 Bull Shadow-Life is Good!
+C Kim the trigger on the A01-LD did not need to be upgraded. Just wanted to see how good it could get... As far as the Phoenix, the U.S. distributor is The Attic Imports through The Sportsman’s Loft in North Dakota. They provide all the warranty service and parts. Congrats on your Bull Shadow. Thanks for watching.
@@MDpolo Thanks the Phoenix surely is a nice pistol, it would be horrible to have to wait months and Customs hang ups to get parts.
Now I hav e a major problem with the phoenix redback. Shot it today against Les Bare 9mm. Both shoot much better then i can, both are fun. Redback even smoother if that is possible then the Les Baer. I have a lot of semi automatics. Problem now is I dont want to shoot any of the others.
I know what you mean! I really do. Which makes it difficult considering that I run a gun channel. Stay tuned...
??? You don't have to disassemble the internals of a CZ or most non-1911 pistols to get to the mainspring. Not sure about the CZC A01 specifically, but typically on CZ's (and other non-1911's) you would just pull the spring plug off the bottom. It is actually simpler than on a 1911.
@J. Bar Perhaps it comes from using the same platform too much without any diversity. When you _finally_ look at a different type of pistol, you may approach it with the lens you've built from working on your other favorite platform for so long, and overlook any potentially simpler and sometimes obvious solutions.
Great review. Is the mainspring and recoil spring compatible between the two?
Regrettably no they are not. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch.
Thank you for sharing, when it comes to the barrel is it match grade barrel? I have a sphinx sdp production, is it the same quality with the Redback barrel?
I have reached out to Phoenix with the intent of getting more specific details of the construction of the Redback barrel. I will circle back with you as soon as I have those details.
Though its more expensive, the Phoenix is way better. The Swiss machining is impeccable. Beretta 92X Performance is a lot cheaper than both and better trigger pull. Great video thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment. I have yet to try the 92X Performance but I’m looking for one. Cheers!
Dear Sir
Im thinking of buying one of either or
I want your opinion shooting wise is it for the CZ or Phoenix ?
Thank you so much for the lovely channel
So much of it is personal preference. For me, I would take the Phoenix all day. But they are both fantastic. Thank you for your kind words and for watching.
I just got the redback today. I also have the CZ A01-LD. I have not shot CZ in awhile. I also today shot Les Baer in 9mm and 38 super. The trigger on the Les Baer is a little lighter and my range officer thought a tad better. I thought my Les Baer was the best shooting pistol I had shot but the Redback is equal maybe on this first day a tiny bit better group. Both are spot on regarding where to hold. Wherever you hold thats where the bullet goes. Only problem with these pistols and I have Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, STI--all shoot very well. When you shot these you dont want to shoe some of the others like S &W, etc. I collect nice pistols and always look foreward to the STI etc. Now going to be hard with this ammo shortage to use on what pistol
Congratulations on your Redback. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Nice collection you have! I would like to know what you think of the red back once you have the opportunity of taking it to the range. Thank you very much for watching!
@@MDpolo Yes the phoenix is as good as any pistol I have if not better. i am going to do a contest with myself with several of the top tier pistols Have including Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, STI, Les Baer. I also have a couple of barrettas including the performance model that are quite good. I dont see anything that will beat the new Phoenix.
I held one of the CZ A01s, what a monster of a gun. I was laughing at how absurd it was the whole time, but in a good way
I have no doubts its an excellent firearm but both of these are probably far outside my price range for the foreseeable future
The a01-ld is a pretty big pistol. Both are awesome.
You can find the A01 for around $1,800, which is a great value in my opinion.
I have the A01 and I doubt the Phoenix shoots better but damn it just looks fantastic
In my hands it does. And it’s been considerably more reliable than the A01. I have yet to have a single failure or jam with any of my Phoenix pistols. Thank you very much for watching!
How about accuracy testing using a ransom bench? Which truly measures real accuracy vs human interaction or inteference~ That would be awesome, that Phoenix Redback is beautiful pistol~ Wish I could see in person locally, the A01-LD didn't impress me at all, sure it was nice but extremely heavy! Felt almost like an open gun, while weight is important too much weight can limit transitions to targets for competitive shooters. So weight is not always your friend~ Besides, 9mm is already a mild recoil ammo platform~ Oh would be nice to see the Redback in an Optic Configuration, especially for the Carry Optics division. Nice video!!!
You are correct regarding the ransom rest, however I am more interested in how they shoot in my hand because other than testing, I will never shoot them from the rest again. They are both spectacular, but the Phoenix is truly special. Thank you for your kind words and for watching!
@@MDpolo I'm extremely intrigued by the Phoenix offering~ Thanks to you I may end up spending more money, lol~ Oh well, its just money that you will never take with you once you leave this earth and besides, you ONLY live ONCE!
chgofirefighter You will not be disappointed!
@@MDpolo Meant to ask you how's the barrel lock up on the Redback? Any play or movement?
@@MDpolo It's basically a CZ clone, but made better! :)
Where did you get the NP3/chrome finish done
At CZ Custom shop. Thanks for watching.
How much was it to get the hardchrome done by CZC??
It was done at the commission of a friend of mine and I’m not sure what he paid for it.
If you could own 1 gun for Conceal and Carry, and 1 Gun for Range, and 1 Gun for competitive shooting, which guns, out of all of the guns you have reviewed would it be? Would it be the new Staccato line, CZ A01, RedBack, Wilson Combat, NightHawk, or any other guns? Hard question I know, but I am sure many viewers would love to get your take since you have all of these ate your disposal to shoot. Thank you.
That IS a difficult question. But off-the-cuff I would have to say that for summer concealed carry it would be my Sig P365 as I have it configured now and for winter the Sphinx SDP or my CZ P07 as I have it configured. For range, it would have to be the Staccato P and for competition the Phoenix Redback. Of course I reserve the right to change my opinion. Which are your favorite ones? Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
@@MDpolo I have only owned the Staccato and CZ shadow 2 orange. I am really interested in the A01 and SAO Tactical orange by CZ Customs. I have shot (rented) Sig, HK, Walter, SW, etc. I really did not like the harshness or recoil from those guns. But it may be due to the fact they are rental guns. But Two things I would like to have is a RED Dot and a rail for a light. The CZ Tactical doesn't have the rail, which is what is keeping me from it, and the A01 can get it with rail and Red Dot, but I have never shot it, and it would be an expensive experiment if I purchased it and didn't like it. Right now the Staccato C2 is pretty amazing. I have the Streamlight with green laser on the rail and love it, and I hope to get a red dot added. I usually shoot 300 - 500 rounds at the range with the C2, and even though it is a CC gun with a 3.9" barrel, I can shoot that gun all day without fatigue. I could never do that with any Sig... with exception of the Legion lineup. But the accuracy of a 4.4 - 5" barrel with possibly slightly less muzzle flip and less recoil is what I am seeking for my second gun. I am leaning towards a Wilson combat or Nighthawk, but these are super expensive, thus the CZ custom A01 (SAO) model. But that CZ can also be around $3k, so it isn't cheap either.
Well, all the pistols that you mention.come with a high price tag. Since you already own a Staccato, if you are looking for something that is CZ 75 based, I would go with the Phoenix. If you’re looking for something that is 1911 based, I would go with Wilson Combat. Just my opinion.
2 Beauties
They sure are. Thank you for watching!
What mags do the Ao1 take?
Regular CZ mags from the P09 or P10F.
Any range comparisons?
Not yet. Trying to find ammo to do arrange sessions for the channel without depleting my personal stash.
@@MDpolo Definitely Understandable. Finding decent 9mm is like walking up on a leprechaun.
Hello again, where can I find the Phoenix Redback? I'm selling my CZ's and purchasing this bad boy...! :) Also, does anyone carry a trigger kit, hate the shoe style trigger bar, prefer a flatter trigger or less curved
Hello! Do you have Instagram? If yes, send me a direct message there and I will put you in touch directly with the distributor. I’ve never looked into trigger kits because the trigger is spectacular. However, when you speak to the distributor they can guide you through all the available options. One of the models they make is the single action only which comes with a flat trigger and it is superb. Looking forward to hearing from you.
@@MDpolo Is you IG the same as your name on youtube?

We are talking about zwiss precision
We sure are. The Redback is superb. Thank you very much for watching.
Built like a czech watch....
Well...Sphinx is not legendary in EU competition circuits...if anything, what springs to mind is that the early models were cracking and were very expensive. Otherwise it was a beautiful piece of gear, but never gained much popularity.
My understanding from speaking to European competition shooters is different. The feedback that I got from them was that the Sphinx 3000 was very successful and a very sought after Competition pistol. I appreciate your feedback and thank you very much for watching.
@@MDpolo Very nice reviews, congrats! I've participated in over 250 competitions in the past 10 years, mostly in EU. Very few people used Sphinx, mostly because of its price and availability. It was predominantly IPSC Production division gun and as such it cost 3-4 times more at the time then the most popular CZ , while construction-wise it was basically the same gun (of course quality of components might have differed). At some point I was seriously considering buying a Standard (Limited) one, but gave up due to reported quality issues, availability of spare parts, limited mag capacity etc. It felt great in hand, though.
Thank you very much for your kind words and for all this information!
@@MDpolo Ah , nice guns maybe , I have 2 sphinx 3000's I x 9mm and 1x 357 sig , big problem with buying boutiq guns like the SPHINX and the PHONEX is spare parts ,they appear to be non existent
and once you need a part and can't get it you have an expensive pile of junk on your hands , just ask my .
@@user-yn3ln7cs4c The Attic has plenty of spare parts for the guns that they sell. If for some reason they don’t have a part, they can get it from Switzerland.
When did they start allowing porn on the internet? Pronounce it how you like but the locals say may sahh. Thanks for showing off these guns.
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching!
if you are comparing everything to a 1911 but you want 9mm in high capacity then get a 2011.
Because a lot of shooters compare these pistols to high-end 1911s. Thanks for watching.
trigger guard on the Phoenix Redback needs a redesign..... not very well done.
I’ve had zero issues with it. What problem do you see? Thanks for watching.
You don’t “have got” anything. You “have” something. Learn proper grammar. The music choice is awful, so won’t be watching any more of your vids. But before I go... I’ll take a CZ Accu Shadow 2 over either of these pistols.
+Dacos127 thank you for the lesson. English is not my first language, I am self-taught and doing my best to improve. By the way, I speak five languages. What are “bids”? Must be additional proper grammar that I’m not aware of... Anyway, have a Blessed life and goodbye.
