- I RETURNED TO THE PHILIPPINES VIA THE BACKDOOR!
Most people arrive in the Philippines by plane. But there's another option - a boat from Sabah, Malaysia going to some of the ports of Mindanao.
So I tried out a boat that has only been running for a few months - the M/V Ming Hai Express that travels between Tawau, Sabah, and Bongao, Tawi-Tawi!

That backdoor is the front door of our pre-colonial past. Thank you KD nice video.
Fantastic one sentence comment, it tells about the Philippines itself before Spanish, America and Japanese colonization.
Being Filipino I'm really tremendously amazing indeed and proud of you KD.
Always keep safe KD.
We love you ❤ regards your beautiful wife nhel, daughter lily
God bless
It is quite surprising to see how close Philippines and Malaysia really are. I never made the connection in my mind, however, seeing you do this trip brought it home for me. Close can be a such a relative term, but the fact that you can take a ferry between the two communities shows why there has been so much commerce and interaction between them. Salamat, Anselm, for this video.
Philippines used to own part of Malaysia via the Sultan of the Kingdom of Sulu...
Just over night via boat. lol😊
Especially in earlier days, and if you look at what "belonged" to whom, it explains a lot of conflicts in the past.
There is even one between Sandakan and Zamboanga, which would be even easier to travel, but they seem to have a bit of an inconsistent schedule. Too bad. A proper reliable ferry schedule that is more known to more people would be also interesting for tourists. Would strenghten the tourism in Zamboanga but also in Sabah, both have their unique locations that could be interesting to so many people.
@@i-am-your-conscience they are finally releasing the Zamboanga - Sandakan schedule a week ahead which is great. Before it was unreliable!
Yachts entrance is Palawan kaso walang immigration ang Balabac kaya Puerto pa napunta, di kasi na tuloy yung immigration at ferry kasi natalo yung Congressman 😅
I worked in the mid-80s in Zamboanga, and people told me they sometimes travel by boat to work in Sabah. Also, smuggled goods from Malaysia and Indonesia are very common in Zamboanga.
My Filipino clan is from Mindanao. The Sabah locals were so nice to my aunt a former resident as her husband worked in Malaysia. Your history sounds spot on.
Yes, familial ties cross this border as well as other comment pointed out- also on the PH. Indo maritime border.
Your International Malay language skills are also impressive sir.
As a other comment pointed out, Indo is building new capital city Nusantara on Borneo. This ferry may get more business.
Maybe you've seen FEATR Tawi Tawi episode?
Maraming Salamat po.
Liked and subscribed.
Wow, there was so much packed into this video, I don't even know how to comment. Pretty cool though, how you're following the history around, recently in the Sulu and then Malaysia; you're making the world smaller every day.
Thank you KD for highlighting this BIMP-EAGA (🇧🇳 🇮🇩 🇲🇾 🇵🇭) landmark achievement in travel.
Amazing review and points you have there Kumander ! Im from Tawau and currently in KL... ive long been observing and highly anticipating Tawau opening up its borders to Philipines, Indonesia and Oriental countries Etc etc... Fyi, lahad datu just officially opened its doors to makasar via ferry service. 2024 we will see China charter flights directly to tawau. Tawi-Tawi airport also grew healthily over the years... imagine many years ago it was just turboprop aircraft flying there... today the A320 flies to Tawi2... thats amazing. Thing will open up even more in the near future because indonesia is shifting their capital to kalimantan. that would be intersting... the "indonesian backdoor" route is equally amazing to explore !
Thanks Jonny! One day I'd also like to take the ferry from Tawau to Tarakan. Lahad Datu opening up as an international port is also exciting, Sulawesi in reach! The whole region is really changing rapidly and I'm very excited for its future.
I am so happy that you now seem more passionate and focused with your travel vlogs.
I feel you’ve found your mojo back.
Thanks for sharing your adventures Kumander Daot ! ❤🇵🇭
I get so inspired by these trips 🙂
I like how you showed us the connection of Philippines to our southern country neighbors. It is a route less traveled but hopefully be more common after your vlog.
Try to go to Miangas Island in Indonesia. It is near Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental
walang bumabyahe dun
you could have been my best Geography and History teacher I had. Thanks for sharing and discussing our cultures. all love from Philippines and Malaysia.
This! This is my favourite video from you so far. Full packaged! History and all.
Your adventures went on to next level Kumander! I'm really amazed and envious I really want to go to Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Sabah because of what I've seen on your adventures. It feels like our origin came into this back door. Almost everything food, culture and people looks like us. I wonder If we are not colonized by Spain then we will not be called Filipino.
Many years ago Philippines wasn't allowed to export agriculture products. My parents had a boat that transport tons of lumber from Dinagat Island to Bohol and Cebu. Our boat is sometimes rented by the sugar exporter to drop load of sugars to Borneo which is now Brunei. Once it get to Borneo it's international freeport.
Good morning everyone.
Let's support KD he deserves millions subscriber ❤
God bless everyone 🙏 ❤️
This guy deserves a million subs.
Pinoys are someone afraid of traveling to Sabah via the backdoor though it's somehow adventurous and thrilling. with kidnappings and terrorism most pinoys skip that beautiful route, learning the Muslim environment and culture of the people of tawi tawi makes us proud. Maybe someday most people from Manila try to travel to ur beautiful town craving for fresh seafoods ..shout-out to my country man of Bongao, only I've seen in Google maps nice place ❤
I’m from Tawi2x born in Palawan, I grew up in Tawi2x till my high school years. Went to coin ZC. I’ve been on vacation in Tawi2x for the past years, but never afraid of insurgents. You should experience traveling to that island and see for yourself. My husband has been to Tawi2x few times and he’s an American. He was not afraid of being kidnapped because he was we’ll taking care of. So nothing to worry.
Malaysian are more afraid to travel in Sabah than Pinoys lol
A content I had been waiting for, travel by the seas, who knows KD might do Sulawesi Indonesia to Sarangani, General Santos City, from the most southern point of Palawan to any port of the whole Bornéo Island that is shared by 3 countries.
Good Morning Kumander Daot!!! Thanks for the very informative vlog this morning! 🎉
I guess 100 plus is famous in Malaysia and here in Singapore 🙋🏻♀️😅
Wow! Very interesting history about Malaysia Kumander!

Youre great kumander Daot ! I appreciate you for being a historian and love the Philippines i am a Tausug of Sulu from maimbung where the seat of Sultanate located.
I hope that there will be more of these ferries. Would love to take them some day.
So nice to have the option 😁
What an adventure, mate!
Thank you for showing us the backdoor KD!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Whoah 😲 what a great -great adventure! This is another informative vlog. KumanDo the explorer 🤗
Hoping and looking forward to more vlogs featuring cities and towns in the BIMP-EAGA region that show their cross-cultural interactions, trade and migration patterns, tourism prospects, and perhaps more! I've never been to these places in Philippines and Sabah so the vicarious experience was much worth it.
Awesome content kumander. I like this type of info, the less travelled route and places. This is what I called an adventure. It inspired me back not as a tourist but an adventurer
I’m a Filipino living in Cebu, but this is all new to me…I feel I’m in adventure with you too. Thanks😊
Welcome to Philippines kumander daot bai❤
I esp. enjoy your TRAVEL vlogs, KD, because you explore places & things I would probably seek also = shopping, sightseeing, and of course, good EATS!! ... SHOPPING for pasalubongs is FUN, too. They keep the loved ones at home happy and supportive of your future ventures, right? Nice and easy trip!! 👍🏻 thanks for sharing, Anselm.
wow. hope the southern part of the philippines will finally find its peace and prosperity. this is a splendid trip to plan. definitely a bucket list.
Not far from Tawau, in Indonesian Borneo, Indonesia is building their new Captial city in East Kalimantan. Yep, they are moving their Captial from Jakarta to Kalimantan, Borneo.
They have boats to Nunukan and Tawakan... Gives me ideas for the future!

Kumander you have a lot of friends na in tne Philippines.. ❤
Wow...Sabah, philippines
Philippines claims Sabah on the basis that Sabah was said to be once under Sulu. Sulu only claimed that Sabah was given by Brunei to Sulu as a gift for purportedly helping Brunei fight rebels. But Brunei refuted this claim and denied ever having given Sabah to Sulu. There was NO DOCUMENT regarding the transfer of ownership of Sabah from Brunei to Sulu signed by both Sultans.
Love your video❤❤❤❤
amping kumander daot
Always great 👍🙂
Ill be planning to travel ZC to Sandakan and back... maybe this year...
Salamat KD for your great adventure and show case of the two good neighbours and culture
FULL SUPPORT KUMANDER
I would never travel by boat at night time. Unless it's emergency. Brave of you!
I love it!!!
The fact that your passport is stamped differently when your go in and out sabah speaks volumes.
There is an immigration office there from Zamboanga port.going to sandakan…2019 we went to sabah just birds watching for three weeks
Adventure of a lifetime 👍
Kulang waway sakalam
I work before in sandakan ,when i go back home to Philippines through backdoor also😂 what an unforgettable exprienced for me because I was stranded in tawi² for 5 days. Those 5 days we stayed in the ship ,we only go down to buy and eat .Its a crazy experienced😂😂
Oh wow haha what an experience! Bongao is a fun place
San po kayo galing Zamboanga po ba di po ba nakakatakot mag backdoor
I love those little "palenke" everywhere in Asia. They have affordable merchandise and souvenirs that would cost 10X in a city shopping mall. Other than the difference in languages, it seemed like the Philippines.
Oh, stormy day in sea, it is stormy day also here till nxt wk🤔..grmny
was in bintulu malaysia 10yrs ago. nice place. no tricycles. hehe
