  • On March 23, 1989 the Exxon Valdez an oil supertanker operated by Exxon left the port of Valdez headed for Long beach, CA with almost 54 million gallons of crude oil on board. Shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989, the supertanker collided with Bligh Reef, a well known navigation hazard, ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The result was catastrophic. Although the spill was radioed in shortly after the collision Exxons response was slow. In fact, there was no recovery effort for three days while Exxon searched for clean up equipment. During that time millions of gallons of oil began to spread down the coast. Days later as the clean up effort began the oil slick was no longer containable. It eventually extended 470 miles to the southwest, contaminated hundreds of miles of coastline. For more information on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill go to the Website - Sound Truth and Corporate Myths: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill at www.soundtruth.... This website is from Riki Ott, PhD, a marine oil pollution expert and former commercial fisherman in Alaska's Prince William Sound. She was on the scene before, during, and after the Exxon Valdez oil spill and experienced firsthand the spill's effects, including environmental devastation, economic losses to the fishing industry, and psychosocial trauma to the close-knit community. For a look at worker health and safety issues during the oil spill cleanup, view the video clip, Worker Safety Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 1989, on CZcams at • Worker Safety Exxon Va... . For a detailed federal government review of worker health and safety issues, read the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) report, Alaska Oil Spill Health Hazard Evaluation (HETA 89-200 & 89-273-2111), published in May 1991 and available on the NIOSH website at www.cdc.gov/nio.... . I am doing a news paper article in class about this, I was really upset seeing the animals and birds dying because of the oil in the ocean. Its so horrible. And it actually happened on the 24th of March 1980 shortly after midnight. :)

      1980? The ship wasn't even built in 1980. Pretty sure it was 1989 like the video discription says.

    But cpt hazelwwod was not in charge before the crash. Exxon company policies had the greatest role to play in the many cuases of the crash.

    Greg Palast stated in 2008 "Forget the drunken skipper fable. As to Captain Joe Hazelwood, he was below decks, sleeping off his bender. At the helm, the third mate would never have collided with Bligh Reef had he looked at his Raycas radar. But the radar was not turned on. In fact, the tanker's radar was left broken and disabled for more than a year before the disaster, and Exxon management knew it. It was [in Exxon's view] just too expensive to fix and operate."[12

    I hope the current spill caused by the explosion and sinking of the oil rig of the coast of the US will not be as bad at this. But my pessimistic side is saying it just might, last figure from the news said that they expect it to top around 4.3 Million gallons..

    what actually occurred was the Exxon and Alyeska - when approached to sign the contract for piping to the bay there was a proviso that a sound and reasonable contingency plan was in place in the event of an 'event' or 'incident' - the personages whom deigned to sign the contract lied and said there was. People - well citizens and taxpayers should never allow ANY MEANS NECESSARY folk to position themselves into employments positions in civil impact businesses or in governance administration.

    it's bullshite how Hazelwood gets so much blame for this. it was a long night and so what if he had a few drinks to take the edge off? he did nothing wrong and he should've sued the govt for all the wrongdoing they did to him. Hazelwood was actually heroic, if not for his quick response this could've been tragic

    • @markdcatlin
      @markdcatlin  Před 7 lety +2

      I agree Hazelwood was not the cause of the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. Many decisions made or influenced by Exxon and other oil companies were the true cause of the spill

    • @vanceb1
      @vanceb1 Před 6 lety +1

      I'm retired from the USCG and my boss was the lead investigator for the grounding. There was no doubt that Hazelwood had been drinking and was likely impaired but that isn't why they made the turn too late. The ship was on auto pilot at the time. The mate on watch ordered the helmsman to change course. The helmsman didn't know how to shut off the auto pilot (the switch was right by his knee and if he moved the tiller it would shut off the auto pilot). The mate on watch didn't notice because he was out of the bridge wing chatting up the attractive young woman who just joined the crew. By the time the helmsman put the rudder over 18 minutes had passed. The ship had travelled several miles in that time and they ended up running aground. The rest is history.

    While this was repeated widely during the BP Gulf spill, it is simply not true. I worked on the spill on worker health issues for the Laborers Union. We saw lots of problems and exposures but no mass death among the 10,000+ cleanup workers has occurred. But more must be done to protect future oil spill cleanup workers.

  • @markdcatlin
    @markdcatlin  Před 12 lety

    Dear Jason, I disagree - Mobile assumes responsibilty for the tragic results of Exxon's past decisions. I hope you are correct about Mobile being more responsible - but they have to prove it. The oil industry continues to have a horrible record on occupational and environmental health and safety.

  • @yanks2661
    @yanks2661 Před 12 lety

    Captain Hazelwood was a drunk and the reason he was not in charge was because he had been drinking that night, before they disembarked and ordered crew members to man the ship that should have never been granted that authority in the first place, hence why they crashed. Plus Exxon knew of Hazelwoods drinking issues before they hired him and certain crew members reported his erratic drinking problems during his tenure with Exxon to higher ups and yet nothing was done so it was Exxon's fault

    I forgot to mention the approach these people attempted to take. When no interest in conducting an commercial enterprise with sound environmental practises and 'Attitude equates to success' - and attempting to develop authority with arrogance; by attempting to treat or regard 'locals' as numbskulls. This is the conditions the situation and legal scenario was subject to with various of these people such as David Kennedy. 20 years on the legal situation and environment clean up is far from cool
