  • As a consequence of their actions, officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his training officer, Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) receive letters of reprimand. For a rookie like Nolan, that kind of blemish on his record this early is a severe blow to his career in law enforcement. Watch 'The Rookie' SUNDAY 10|9c on ABC.

    Love how the rookie placed Nolan as a cop Ted lasso. A relentless, unbridled drive forward of optimism that infects everyone around him to the point where even those that met him with visceral discontent become enamoured and invested in his progress. Truly a lovable character that Nathan Fillion embodies. Still disappointed that he wasn’t cast as Hal Jordan for the DCU, because John Nolan is the perfect exemplification of that character.

    What Commander Percy West said to Nyla in the beginning of the episode was 100% true. All police officers no matter their rank/title see members of internal affairs as an enemy or to put in a more colorful way they see internal affairs as the Grim Reaper. Its also true that police officers hate defense lawyers until they need them.

      I've seen good IA people and bad. I have seen them screw over officers for nothing while protecting people who should be (and eventually were) fired. I have also seen them pass on BIs on people who shouldn't be on the job.
      I generally liked having a competent and fair IA unit as a cop. They fulfill a needed purpose, and neutral fact finders can really cover your ass down the line if you did something right but controversial.
      In the end, I spent a lot of my career as a supervisor. I wanted a good IA unit. I never felt the need to be fearful of them.

    • @ethrsag735
      @ethrsag735 Před 10 měsíci +2

      The problem here is the context of the situation which he is dismissing. One of the reasons why people see departments like IA or QA as the enemy is because it is their job to find the problems which nowadays are what get focused on rather than evaluating the individual in question as a whole.
      In this situation you'd have the word of a 40+ rookie with some marks on his record accusing a well respected and highly decorated detective of framing him for being an informant for criminal elements as well as possessing copious amounts of drugs in his house in a hidden compartment Nolan knew nothing about. 2+2 means that there will be unconscious bias in the detectives favor no matter how you justify Percy's outrage.
      Plus people have a natural belligerence for any figure with a significant civil authority, you can't expect people to have an even greater degree of caution around the watchers who watch the watchers without watchers watching them. It's just human nature to be wary of others since power to humans is just as dangerously addictive to abuse as cocaine.

    Letter of reprimand on their record definitely isn’t a good look to superiors especially when it was given when they were a rookie but I assume due to Nolan getting a golden ticket, he can still advance in his career even if he chose to be a training officer. The way Nyla made it sound, the golden ticket isn’t just a one time pass in advancement but also sign of upstanding officer since she said she’d be alright if their superiors found out that they were independently investigating the DIA and the counterfeit money.

      I don't recall what this was about, but I never worried about petty discipline stuff like that. Some agencies may have a policy to expunge them after a period of time.
      You drive on. You establish a service reputation, and it doesn't matter. So long as you don't make the same kind of mistake again, it's no big deal.
      I was written up right before I was promoted to sergeant. A lieutenant gave me a stupid but legal order. I griped about it a lot. When he gave me the counseling statement, he gave me some advice about how writing cops up was good for them. I thought it was a bunch of BS.
      Writing people up is something I needed to do sometimes, but if you're doing it too much, you're probably failing as a leader.

    In sad truth, a letter of reprimand will follow the officer for the rest if their career. Yes, if they show that they have done better since, it can be overlooked, but ultimately, its there to stay.
    For a rookie officer in training, it would as Sgt Grey said, be the end of his or her career right there. Depending on the severity of the situation, depends on how much that letter is going to affect them.
    Nolan should have been booted for what he did, even though he was framed, he knowingly went against the department's policies and is now lucky to continue to be an officer.

    Sergeant Grey was right about treating the notion of bad behavior and conduct is okay so long as it produces justice like a cancer. Any good cop worth their profession should know how thin that line is between good and bad in their profession. Far too many cops have easily lost their way engaging in that kind of behavior and conduct and ended up straying so far from the right path they could not come back. That is exactly what happened to Michael Chiklis's character Vic on The Shield.

    I f-ing loved this show. 11 min into the first episode of season 3 and they start blaming his treatment on his color and not the relationships he"s made and I'm done. I'm beyond Hollywood thinking they can preach to me about anything when they themselves are just as f-ed up. The only way we'll get past all of this is with love and acceptance not hate and finger-pointing.

      @@Wyr_111 its stupid because from his actions we know he is not racist. There is a more complex story they could have gone with. They could have shown how he deals with other officers that are racist. And also how he would deal with being accused of being racist just because he's a white person. It's a complicated situation ( three dimensional) that they are making one-dimensional and too simplistic.

      Yeah, makes me worry for the future of the show. Bad place to put that stuff anyway. They want to talk about racial injustice because of cops, in a show where the original captain was a woman of ethnic backround, the long standing sergeant is black, two out of three of the main rookies are colored, two out of three of the TOs are colored, the head of IA is black, the head detective was black for 2 seasons, the task force they worked with using Bradford's wife as a ci was led by a black man, if you want to have a talk about racial issues in America I'm all for it, but in a show where 80% of the fucking cast and lead characters and people in charge are people of color... that is NOT the time or place, have fun tanking your show into the dust. Poor Nathan, caught up in this shit and if it keeps going it will burn his entire name to the ground with it.

      @insenit556 Před rokem

      @@Wyr_111I honestly think the Wesley line was more of a surprise than the other stuff throughout season 3.
      Jackson getting paired with Stanton led to more direct racism in the episodes, and Nolan and Harper getting assigned to the community center both led to more situations that involved the topic of racism. Even Harper’s “white savior” line in the beginning of the season was done sort of well, not calling him one, but saying that despite his good intentions some of his actions gave the wrong impression. But, the show made it a point to show he was still doing good. He connected with people, helped a man who needed work, and then saved his life, it was a way to include the topic without criticizing the character.
      Meanwhile, when Wesley is talking to Nolan in the station after he was arrested, he goes off about how if Nolan wasn’t a white male cop then he wouldn’t be receiving this level of treatment. I mean yeah, you’re technically right, but he is caught up in a police corruption cover up and is being framed by another cop, who is his close friend, all of which is happening right after two people he went to the academy with were killed. So it just doesn’t feel like the place or the time to even try to bring up a racial element, but he does so anyways, because season 3 focuses on racism, so they need to mention it in the first episode, no matter how weird it feels.

Nolan and Harper had to be very sure, careful and rightly said, not with circumstantial evidence before referring to IA. Otherwise, would betray a GOOD FRIEND. Might as well kept quiet and close one eye? No wonder, many police turned bad. A really2 bad system. Or, just to keep Nolan as rookie for this series.🤔😆😆😆

      To uphold the law they went around the law and the standard operating procedures and regulations of the LAPD. As a Rookie, you are held to an even higher standard. You’re attempting to prove to your colleagues and superiors that you are capable of being trusted to follow the law, procedures and orders given to you by the chain of command which you are expected to follow. You have the power to use deadly force in the course of your duties and make arrests which can result in someone going to prison for the rest of their lives or even face execution. That is not a power given out lightly, nor should it.
      I think because of “Plot Armor” and dependent on the continued ratings success of the show, you will see Nolan earn the trust back for eventual advancement.
