Ah this is so brilliant. Thanks a million for the upload. Lovely memories of the analog era

I'll bet younger folk brought up on round the clock programming (and multi channels) wud find it incomprehensible that there was no telly after 1am! Always loved the reminder to "turn off your telly" lol.

They wouldn’t. I was born in 1990 and many digital TV channels still close down.

It’s seems odd but we only really had ITV at night from the late 80s until the 2000s. Now they don’t really show programmes as such. I preferred 4 channels as it forced you to either watch something you didn’t want to or go out do something interesting.

@@stickytapenrust6869that is a good point. I will say that the destruction of the regional ITV has not been to anyone’s benefit. Thanks for putting up these little time capsules.

Great to see a Thames Diddy closedown, worth the wait…

David Hamble Diddyton, as he was called in “Porridge”.

David Hamiton did his DJ job at BBC Radio 1 & 2 in the weekday mornings.
Then he does his evening slot at Thames Television since 1968.

Surprised the BBC let him work at Thames

@@rtc9063 I think BBC radio were a lot more relaxed then about presenters working for " the other side"! However it was a few years later in 1981 ,TV Gardner & Gardeners World presenter Percy Thrower got sacked from BBC Midlands for doing a 90 second commercial for ATV plugging Fisons ' growmore'

Going by The TVRDb, this actually December 1979! "Top Secret" reunited everyone's favourite family-friendly predator with the producers of brilliant "I Spy" no Robert Culp this time sadly.

Also, the big giveaway of it being 1979 was the style of the slide which David talked over, so the American Typewriter-style font did not come in until early 1980 when the style of Thames slides had changed.

Ah well, only another 22 days before Xmas ads are over and then it's time for a holiday and cut out the coupon in the TV Times or call for a Hoseasons brochure? 🤭

Officially the oldest VHS footage you've found so far! Whoever owned these sure looked after the tapes well.

These were recorded on the earliest (and most expensive) JVC/Ferguson/Baird VHS tapes, before cassette manufacturers started cost-cutting by reducing the quality of the plastic cassette and the tape strip within it. That’s why they’ve survived so well.

@stickytapenrust6869 And I believe they feel a little heavier as well. I had some of them, but I only ended up finding some early 90's to late 00's on them.
You did very well on your recent finds. Keep up the good work as usual.

You watch Diddy in his pomp at Thames and you realise just how much Bill Steel ripped off his style while the two were at ABC - right down to the little asides about the staff...
Of course the two knew each other going way back: Bill will have been his TC at TTT in the '60s.
