The Best Way To Lift Your Back Wheel

- This back wheel lift technique works no matter what pedals you have - flat or clipless. This technique works every time once you understand the principles of unweighting and the pedal scoop. Once you learn the pedal scoop, you'll be able to lift your back wheel (and eventually bunnyhop) any bike that you want. This one magical skill unlocks so many MTB tricks, and once you see it - you can't unsee it.
We'll learn about the principle of pedal scoops as well as unweighting. Those two elements combined will lift your back wheel off the ground in no time!

The biggest problem I have is over coming the fear of going over the bars.
Definitely takes a bit to work up to the balance point. I still struggle with this at the limit. Start super small and get comfortable over time, you'll get it!
Solid content as usual. Even being pretty solid with these moves, I enjoy hearing you explain it in detail, I usually pickup a few additional nuances.
Thanks JBank! It's been interesting to revisit some of the basics, I find myself picking out nuances that I hadn't previously noticed as well. Just now realizing how much time I spend actually thinking about each one of these skills and how best to describe them. Worth it! :)
Thanks to this vid I finally got my front tire up after over three months of trying. The biggest thing for me was I wasn’t putting my feet angled down enough so I couldn’t scoop. Thank you again
That's awesome, so stoked to hear it!
Would love to see a newbie try this with your coaching.
Coming soon - big series launching in early July, exactly that :)
I really really love this channel. All tricks are explain so simply. Practice makes progress
Thank you so much! That made my day!
Yeah completely agree, right up to the point where I go and try it and make an arse of myself 😂
Is it better to practice the rear lift with or without braking, at first? Great content as always
I think it's easier to practice first with the brake, just to get a feel for the motion (and the front wheel balance point) - but it's totally up to you. Whichever you feel most comfortable trying first!
Your explanations are so well articulated and the video is superior. I could tell anyone how to bunny hop. But I still can't get it. Maybe I'll have to leave hopping to the bunnies. 😢😢
Thank you! Practice makes progress - that pedal scoop will come in handy when you're working on bunnyhops, for sure!
its not because of this video, but i used to not be able to then one day something clicked and i could scoop the pedals and lift my back wheel, which led to me learning the english bunnyhop and a bit later the american bunnygop too. such a valuable skill for bike handling and making the trails smooth.
well explained
Thank you!
Love this move for riding over logs and ledges!
So good for that! Next week’s video is going to dive even deeper into that approach!
I love your series of mtb techniques.. clearly spoken and explained .. very nice demonstrations from beginners' perspectives. SUPPORT !!
Thanks so much! The support means a lot!
This makes it super easy to understand what is going on.
Perfect! That was my goal, glad this video was helpful.
I love your videos
Thank you!
Use clipless pedals and rear suspension to do it
wrong! For years ,Thank you
First of all, i really enjoy your videos and detailed explanation. I tried the unweighting , but as i move my weight from the back to the front, i always lose pedal contact. Do you have any Tips or might know whats the problem? Best regards. :)
Thanks! That actually happens to me every now and then, too. What works best is to just think about pushing your feet harder into the pedals, and that extra concentration seems to keep my feet from slipping. I know it seems simple, but it seems to work for me.
First Comment lets go. Love ur stuff man keep doing that
I wish i had a nice trial bike like your one but i don´t have the money...
PS: Great Content
Thanks so much for watching! My first trials bike was a slightly modified XC bike...gotta start somewhere! :)
Practice practice practice!!
I couldn't agree more!
Second Comment lets go. Love ur videos ❤️❤️❤️ Super rider GO!!!!
Thank you!! Stoked that you like them!
I’m trying to figure out how to do this and just can’t get it right seems like I’m scared of going over the bars and or falling off the bike
Definitely start small and work up to the limit of your comfort zone. We’re going to cover this in the 30-day challenge, too!
Like to do it not with straight arm so u can pop up the front wheel when the back is hight 🎉❤
♡
For the life of me I cannot figure-out how to get the bike to move laterally. 🤦🏻
You're in the right place! There's a video here about moving your front wheel side to side as well.
Well, since I'm also riding a Marin Alpine Trail E-series, I guess I have no excuse to not do this. But it sure was easier when I was 11 on a Schwinn Predator.
Hopefully some of those core riding skills from the Predator era will come in handy!
My dog watched this with me and barked at the screen.
I hope that's a good sign! :)
