  • Quick demonstration of how I climb when saddle hunting. IMO the easiest safest way to climb while saddle hunting. Keep it simple. one hitch , no tieing knots in the field , no physical effort to climb. so easy it can be done with one hand. if you want to get the gear to do this check us out on

    I'm new to climbing but on my first descend ever I instinctively put that bite under my thigh to the opposite hand; it just seemed obvious. Not only does it provide some added safety in case any part of the bridge fails, but you can pull up and take some weight off the Blake's or Prusik which makes the knot slide better or frees it up if it's a bit locked up.

    Great video. Did a DNA test 3years ago, I was left in an orphanage when I was 3. Got lucky and was raised by farm people with good values. I live out west but both my parents were originally from New York and Pennsylvania. I've made several trips back and have met many relatives. Most live around Watkins Glen. I'm an avid hunter and would love to come back and hunt where my father and ancestors hunted. I have been wanting to use a tree saddle for years. Elk and deer are my main focus. I bowhunt Wyoming every year and love hunting dark timber. Wind is everything in elk hunting, the mountains are 7,000 to 9,000 ft where I hunt. The wind constantly changes direction and swirls. We hunt 3 to 7 miles back in typically weight and bulk are our enemies. Even if we have horses there is only so much room. Full size tree stands are to big n bulky and noisy. Anyways I'm going to get a deer tag in 2 years for New York. I would love to have you help me get set up. Please send me a message on my email.

    What do you do for trees with no limbs?
    How often do you have to replace ropes? Depending on how often you hunt, you would have to replace your rope 2 or 3 times a year from all the rubbing against the tree.

    • @NYSaddleHunter
      @NYSaddleHunter  Před rokem +2

      For trees with no limbs we single stick climb those. The rope Im clombing on a a double braid arborist rope. DRT/MRS climbing is a aborist tree access standard thats been around a long time. The rope im using in this video is 5 years old and I climb all year long on it and its like new. These rope are designed for this application will last a hunter a long time. What beats up a rope isnt the friction on the tree its tge friction in the hitch if you rambo out of a tree fast. If you repel out slow its not an issue. I inspect my ropes before or after each climb in case there was foreign metal in the tree that might potentially damage the rope but as I said the rope in this video was purchased in 2018 and I climb several times a week all year long and its like new. Its a common misconception that tree friction will make the rope life short. I think its probably a good idea to retire a rope every 5 or so years but your not going to wear out a good quality climbing rope that easily . The only way you can his decending too fast. Drcend slow and it will last many years.

      @@NYSaddleHunter Would 8mm Resc Tech work in this application or do you need specific arborist ropes?

    • @NYSaddleHunter
      @NYSaddleHunter  Před rokem

      Trees with no limbs we either install a false crotch preseason or single stick climb them.
      Good quality climbing ropes are abration resistent and designed to take friction. The friction on the tree limb doesnt effect the rope. The only way to damage the rope is to decend too quickly and create fruction heat in the hitch. MRS/DRT climbing has been the standard for tree rope access for 50 years. This particular rope im using in the video was purchased in 2018. I climb at a minimum 3 times a week and sonetimes 3 times a day. I climb more than most guys will and my rope looks like it did the day I bought it in 2018. They will last the average hunter many years but as a rule we like to tell people its probably a good practice to replace your line every 5 years as a general rule or if the rope gets damaged by foreign metal in a tree or somthing like that. When in doubt replace it but for the average hunter its going to last you many years and tree friction wont harm a quality climbing rope

      @@underdogoutdoors I had a huge white oak I was in last week. There wasn't a crotch last March that I could use to climb up the good side of the 🌳. So I got up 20 feet into it & tied off. Then I threw a throwball over another crotch that was just a little higher. Cuz I was tied into the 🌳 with 1 foot on a branch I disconnected my climbing rope & put it over the new crotch. When I got up as high as I could I had a thick branch parallel to the ground to stand on. I tied off once again but this time I put my climbing rope which was over the new crotch & brought the sewn end side to my left over the old crotch. By having a double crotch with 1 crotch slightly lower & off to the side a couple of feet I can now pull myself up the good side of the 🌳. Those big trees r the best but sometimes u need to do the groundwork post-season for them to become epic.

    Your actually using your muscles to lift. Ie: leg/arm mucles

    • @NYSaddleHunter
      @NYSaddleHunter  Před rokem

      Not really because as you step into the footloop your body weight pulls the rope over the crotch , this is why I say your not really using your muscles to lift yourself your weight pulls down on the one end drawing the working end up towards the crotch then when you advance the hitch you hold in place. If you use two hands and your weight its more stable but in my hand im hanging on to the hand ascender that holds the rope and your actually not really excerting your muscles at all the key is the mechanical advantage and stepping your weight into the footloop. If Im using muscle than Id be saying this chubby 55 year old dude climbed with one hand up a rope. Thats not happening. I used by weight and mechanical advange to move the working end up.
      I can use my muscles if I want but as I demonstated if I can do it with one hand its not being done by pulling myself up a rope with muscle strength .
      When climbing anything we will always use somevstabilizing muscle but in this method it truly is mechanical advantage , body weght and advancing a friction hitch thats doing the work not lifting your self with muscle up a rope

    • @jasrobsny
      @jasrobsny Před rokem

      I think Joe's just referring to the mechanical advantage of the double rope with the strength of the thighs makes it feel easy. He's only lifting a portion of his body weight with each step hence not using much muscle. I like to do the same thing by holding a long bite just under the Blake's knot with both hands and stepping up on the loop.
