My Canadian Home Invasion Story Ends in First Degree Murder

  • After 6 months of travelling this year and spending the other 6 months living in the gunshine state of Florida, the last thing I would have expected from a sleepy little hollow in the suburbs of Canada was a home invasion that would end up leaving me with clothing as my only possession and my dad's Honda Element being stolen and used in two counts of first degree murder.
While I have spent the year travelling and avoiding unsafe places this is the last place on earth that I thought I would see my life fall to pieces in a matter of moments.
I encourage all of you to watch this video as this could be any one of you.

Bill Lockhart what do ya mean defenceless Bill? Us Canadians aren’t left defenceless!
All we have to do is politely ask Da Thug if he could please wait a moment and ya jus know he’ll say ok, right? After all, he’s probably a Canadian too, or might have been since last year, so it’s a given he will be polite too, eh?
So, you then run out to the flag pole out front, take our flag down, then put it back up, upside-down. When a neighbour sees the International Distress Signal (that’s what the upside down flag is, eh?)or when Dudley DoRight rides by on his moose (cost cuts forced our Mounties to give up their horses) so, when Dudley sees the wrong-side-up, flag, he charges in to save the day! There, all is good here in Canada. Oh, I forgot, yes Canada is safe, unless you’re a tourist in Northern British Columbine.
      Note:
      1. No ethnic, minority, multi-letter or multi-coloured-flag group was hurt while typing you this story.
      2. Telling everybody about the upside down flag is my good deed for the day.

She should have looked through the peephole and called the guy back or the police. Not only did she open it to one man, that was the first contact, she then reopened it to two men. She could have been horribly murdered (tortured, raped multiple times and then murdered) We have been teaching children for over 40 years about stranger danger. Women how to not become a victim. She actually stated that there was nothing she could do in that situation. You are correct though her lack of willingness to learn how to use a firearm or any type of training will up with her becoming a statistic. Her first mistake was answering the door after that other guy left he was casing the house. Now then after her friend left to go to work several men determined to get in would have regardless of if she answered the door or not anything can happen anywhere. She should have just left through the back door as quickly and quietly as possible and called 911 and get to somewhere safer. When he asked her if he should come back after calling him at work her answer should have been YES!!

I'm a firearms instructor and have dealt with more victims of violence than I want to think about. I have few mantras, but one of them is "Never open the front door. Ever." No one comes over nowadays without texting or calling first. No. One. If you're a guest in someone's home, don't answer because its not your house and NO ONE COMES OVER NOWADAYS WITHOUT TEXTING OR CALLING FIRST. Also, the best home defence is LOW TECH. Screws in windows, door stoppers, fake cameras in all visible areas, and get a dog. Survival is all about risk mitigation. Each of the things I've listed will lower your risk exponentially. Prayers to this lady. She did an excellent job of surviving! BTW, the second most important mantra? "Do not ever let a bad guy take you to a second location." Most of the time that is a different address from where the original crime was committed. But for longer term home invasions, that also includes saying "Let's go upstairs or to the basement". No No No. Statistically speaking, you have seconds left to fight. So fight. Prayers to all involved.

I just heard from an old student of mine that experienced a break in recently. He had a genius idea. He said he had an electrician wire an extra alarm siren on each side of the house (less than $100 to have them wired) where the rain wouldn't hurt it so that when the alarm went off it wasn't just sounding the alarm indoors.....everyone in the entire neighborhood would hear it. Even though we have become complacent around alarms because they're so common.....THAT is an uncommonly loud alarm. And no burgler ever wants to be seen. I'm pretty sure he has some pretty awesome lighting around the house as well.

+Henry Rosenberg He's obviously a naive toolbag who has no idea how things work.
Looks at the statistics +TheDarthJosh - it is exceedingly rare for a licensed and otherwise law abiding gun owner to turn into a "murderer, rapist, and criminal". At least in Canada, licensed gun owners are LITERALLY the most law abiding demographic in the country. Licensed gun owners are around 3 times (yes, THREE TIMES) less likely to commit a violent/serious crime than a "regular" (non gun owning) Canadian. Licensed gun owners are even less likely to commit serious/violent crimes than police officers!
So you'll trust a police officer with a gun, but think that a person who learns to use a gun when they are young will "end up being a murders, rapists and criminals"? So naive

Wow! So sorry this happened to you. I had a home invasion 40 years ago now. I'm now 62. The night of my 22nd birthday, about 10:30 or 11:00 that night, I had come home from my parents house, where my mom made me a nice birthday dinner. I was reading a book, when I heard breaking glass. I was born and raised around firings and had bought my first handgun when I was 21. I ran into my bedroom and grabbed that well hidden, loaded gun, and waited in the dark doorway to see what happened next. I had to quickly run through my plan in my head, and here was the basics of that plan. 1. I would wait in the darkened doorway, as the person, or persons, had entered in my kitchen, and would have to enter the adjoining dining room to get anywhere else in the house. My bedroom adjoined one side of the dining room, so they would have to enter that well lighted dining room. 2 .I decided that if there were more than one person, I would have to shoot them. 2. I decided that, if there was one person, and that person was armed, I would shoot them. 3. I decided that, if there was only one person, and they were unarmed, I would then step out, with my gun aimed at them, and confront them. Luckily for me, and them, situation 3 was what went down. A lone guy, about 45 years old entered thye dining room, and I saw no weapon. I then stepped out, aiming at his head the whole time, and told him to back his butt up against my wall, or I would fire. My roomate, Glen, had been asleep while this was happening, and I yelled for him to call the cops, while I held the guy at gunpoint. I told Glen to tell the police that a bad guy broke into our house, and that the good guy has a gun and is holding him for the police to come and get.
The cops came, and, I had Glen wait for them and remind them that the good guy has a gun and is holding the bad guy. As the police came in, I opened the cylinder on my revolver, and held it by the butt with the tips of my fingers, and made a show of setting it on the couch. Here is what the cops said. First cop into the room, "Hey, Nice gun!". Then he looked at the bad guy, called him by name, and said "Fred Br########, not you again!". Second cop, as he walked in said " I'd have shot him.".
This was November 1st, 1975 at the house we rented on 200th, which is the street that bordered SeaTac Airport near Seattle. Oddly, while this was happening I was not scared at all, but very clear thinking, and I was, and am, a very experienced shooter, that went on to compete in various firearm matches. But, I had very recently quit smoking. Right after the cops took him away, my knees started knocking, and I asked Glen for a smoke, and I started chain smoking. I had to quit all over smoking all over again.
I am very glad that I did not have to shoot this guy, as it would have been hard to deal for my 22 year old self at the time. I am also very glad, in a way, that it happened, as I found out how I would handle a crisis, and I was 100% happy with how I handled it.
I have told the story many times over the 40 years since it happened, not to act like a big man, or something. But, in conversations, or online forums, where I start reading, or hearing, about how nobody ever successfully uses a firearm in self defense. I will not let that type of statement go unchallenged. No shots fired, and no one was injured.
Your event was much worse than mine, as the two criminals had control, and you were beat up. Both of us had our lives changed by these home invasions.
I think you are dealing with it well, and you are one super strong lady!! Even after 40 years, I remember the events of that night like it happened last week. In my case, I suppose, the stress was from how close I came to shooting this dude. I had the hammer cocked, and finger on trigger aimed at his head. He was babbling gibberish and would start to approach me, and I would have to remind him that I would shoot him if he didn't back up against the wall. That happened 3-4 times till the police arrived.
May you have a great, long, happy, and BORING life (compared to this occurance you had!!).

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Unfortunately, I can really empathize with you. Shortly before moving from Ontario to Florida, in my Canadian home I also endured a home invasion. I wasn't tied up. A knife was held to my throat while the other guy ransacked the house. What saved me was my St. Bernard who would not stop barking. Through the window lights could be seen going on at the neighbors houses. One of them was a well known local lawyer who was known for calling the police. They left in a panic and I was fortunate to live through this. As in your case this event turns into a learning experience. Here in Florida the gun laws are different. The first person that ever tries to get in my house uninvited will find themselves in a pine box. I won't even say anything or ask questions, I'll just pull the trigger. I know that sounds cold and cruel. But these guys mean business and they waste no time in attempting to accomplish their task. You came through that very well, but it will stay with you the rest of your life as it has with me. I wish you the best.

They call them "hot burglarys" in Britain, meaning the home owner is home when somebody breaks in, and is threatened with violence and attacked while being robbed. By any definition you choose, that's a straight up home invasion.

Something like this almost happened to me many years ago. I'll just let you know what I've learned over the years. The most important thing I can say is answering your front door requires a procedure. Your front door is a point of breech and it is a point that can change the balance of power because inside the house are all your valuables, family, and privacy. The way to handle a knock at the front door to quickly look who it is. Once you identify who it is, then you want to see them walk away. When they get away from your front door and are about 20 feet away from your front door it is then, and only then that you are safe to open the door and ask them "What do you want?" If they start to move in the direction of the front door you then instruct them to "stop, tell me from there." They should obey all your commands and tell you why they are there from that safe distance. If they insist on coming closer to talk to you, then close the door and don't open it. The problem with someone at the front door is they they can push in the front door when you answer it. They other problem is that they can simply stick their foot between the door and the door jamb and you will not be able to close it. The only way you eliminate this is is to have them no where near the door when you answer it. Never open a door if you can not close it. The last problem with not answering your front door is criminals often use knocking at a front door as a test to see if anyone is home. Not answering it is often a sign you are not home so the best thing to do is to go ahead and let them know you are ignoring them by turning on the stereo. Play some music that will give them the impression it is someone that might be displaced to fight. Playing classical music and they might think its a little old lady at home. Play something like John Fogerty" run through the jungle" and they might think you're a bubba with a mean disposition. Play some Marilyn Manson "beautiful people" and they might think twice about messing with you. Anyway, don't answer your front door unless you'll have all the cards in your favor and that means you choosing those conditions. Best wishes.

It also helps if you have a wrought iron storm door that's locked. Two benefits:One, you can open the inner door without too much worry about someone just rushing in. Two, they'd have to break the storm door before they can kick the inner door in. That noise and time it would take gives you a chance to prepare...

I'm sorry about what happened to you and I'm glad that you were ok considering all things. This is something I preach over and over again to many people. Don't ever assume you are safe from criminals and from violence regardless of your peaceful lifestyle, regardless of where you might live or where you may go. I also fall under the category of unlikely victim because of my lifestyle and circumstances, yet I've also been victimized. I had one break in robbery at one home when I was away from home and one violent armed assault on the street, one block away from another previous home. I was with my young child at the time, she was not hurt and I was also fortunate and walked away from it with minor injuries. But it changed my perspective about security. It bewilders me how many people honestly believe something like that could NEVER happen to them. After my unfortunate last incident I got very wise and prepared on home security, on alertness and awareness and on becoming legally armed. Since, one individual tried to break into my current home in the middle of the night as we slept but was scared off by my security system. Just the automatic motion detection lights and him noticing the security cameras all over my property scared him off as he was beginning his attempt at a break in. Got a very nice recording of his face. If he had continued to try and break in, he would surely have noticed the difficulty in breaching my reinforced door and doorway. Furthermore, had he broken in through a window or some other way, he would have triggered the interior and exterior alarm and woken up all my neighborhood. He would have still been recorded by my inner security system and most importantly... would have met with well executed and planned armed resistance. Yes, we have a break in emergency plan in place and firepower that would make a military squad jealous. I'm retired ex milirary, I tried to.live a life away from firearms and my old soldier mentality, but the evil that walks this world has made it clear, at least to me, that that is not an intelligent decision or wise luxury these days. Most recently, and once again unfortunately, we were once again targeted by someone while we were coming out of a local grocery store and headed to put our groceries in my vehicle. Huge difference is.... as I mentioned earlier, I practice awareness and alertness and I'm always prepared and armed except where prohibited by law. So I noticed immediately that we were being targeted and before that idiot even had the opportunity to make his move I had pretty much diffused the situation without even needing to draw my firearm. I am very fortunate to live in a state where my right to arm and defend myself is honored and protected! Point of this entire narrative is that no one should feel that they are beyond the reach of evil. It is best to practice preparedness, awareness, alertness and if possible, responsible armed defense. Don't let yourself be an easy victim to cowardly predators that roam our streets. Lastly, I keep a fence and gate between my home and the street. I know that is not possible in some neighborhoods because of silly restrictions, but I also look before I answer my gate or door and I always answer with a concealed firearm, if I don't like the person I politely tell them to take a hike! 😀 God bless and stay safe!

You are allowed to have firearms you just have to do a somewhat complicated process of getting a license or license' if you're lucky. It is not written that you may use it as self defense, however, the law states you ARE ALLOWED to use deadly force if necessary. Not specifying if you can use a firearm or not if i recall. But keep in mind you are doing so at risk of fine/imprisonment as the verdict for you doing so is based on a case-by-case basis........

You're right. The Criminal Code does specify that you are entitled to use lethal force if you have very good reason to believe that your life, or the life of someone else, is in immediate danger. However, it doesn't specify that you are not allowed to use a firearm in applying that lethal force. The major question the courts ask, figuratively speaking, when trying to rule on self-defence cases is, "Was the force used as a self-defence measure appropriate for the kind of threat that was posed?"

If the government takes away your ability to defend yourself the point you try and make is moot, if one has been killed that person's rights don't really matter, does it?.

Good question. Here is the facts. When America had ZERO gun laws and when it was normal to see everyone including kids to own guns, we had zero problems. No school shoot-ups or anything. Kids use to bring their shot guns to school and the teacher would lock them up until the kids left school. It was normal for everyone to own guns. At that time crime was the lowest in America. AS SOON as they started creating some gun laws is when crime rose. When Bill Clinton banned AR 15 style guns, crime rose like crazy. When Bush came in he got rid of that gun ban and crime dropped like a rock over night. People get it backwards. They think "well banning guns will solve all the problems" when it wont, when facts show it will actually make it worse.

Because anti gun works in anti gun countries. Knife vs knife, you'll have a much bigger chance of winning, or finding something else to fights with, but a gun, if the person wants to kill you, it's basically game over.
Anti gun is by far the best, HOWEVER, I think it's best people keep their guns in countries like USA, since you can't filter out all those weapons anyways just impossible with those amounts. But really, no fucking reason to implement guns into a country which doesn't have it already, that's just stupid.

    • @mich977f
      @mich977f Před 5 lety

      ostin bambino, Macdonio Oliveir, Outrider
I know it wasn't obvious to you all. But I was referring to knife vs gun (The thief having the gun, in case that wasn't obvious either) is worse than knife vs knife. And you might still think it's better with gun vs gun, and sure it might be, but reality is that in many (some?) countries, people do not have access to it, and the robbers will arrive with alternatives that you might be able to avoid easier than a bullet. I know you guys are all mad because I don't think any country should have weapons available for any civil person. It's not that I don't like the weapons themselves, and I see for the people who has it as a huge hobby, that's really sad they wouldn't be able to pratice that hobby anymore. And sure you could do a lot of damage with a knife, and it won't run dry on ammunition. But looking at the bigger picture, it's just really not good with guns in the the streets whether it be private or public, because we all know where those weapon will end up anyways.
Sure if you want them enough, you can get them. Just an example, there's has literally never been a school shooting (Not that they're common in the US, but they're there) in the country that I live in. And it's simple why, because guns are much more rare here, and you won't get them as a single psycho living at home. You'll need to be a gang or something similar and those things will be in all countries no matter what.
I think it's stupid to think guns will solve all the problems. But like I said earlier, it's too late to change it in countries that has billions of them scattered all over the country already.
Just explain to me why you think guns should be available in a country which has never had guns available to the civil people before?
That's all I want to know, because that's what you all say. I already said it's too late to do something about it in the US or similar situations, so I there's no reason to keep discussing about whether or not to remove them in US. I don't think they should be removed there, but NO reason to put them into societies that has never had it before. It will only make more problems, and the people in those countries probably won't know how to respect the guns and it will end up making a huge chaos.

In america we love our guns. There is bad with the good. But these home invasions wont just happen like it did here and there must be more than just 2. Why?
Because there is more of a chance there is a gun in the house and that gun would expire atleast 1 to 2 of the guys.
My little sister, well she is now 25 but was 19 at the time when we all left to go to the river. Well she stayed behind to catch up on school work (college work)

@@Curonianviking Oh, Tad! Take a little lesson in cause and effect. On one side, Canada has less crime (generally) because of the economy...And because the mentality there is somewhat more civilized (generally). On the other side, if you're talking about ROBBERY or other violent crimes against people, guns have little to do with the inspiration of the act. Just the RESPONSE to the crime and the criminal. Thankfully, if ever the terrible time comes that I have to use them, I'll be better off off for having my training and the tools to protect my family...But your jump to blaming firearms or any other inanimate object for an elevated crime rate brings the anti-gun argument to a new (and might I say "moronic") low.

Glad you made it thru with only some bruising but I really have to say that I find it odd the way you put the comment in there about your friend that you stay with for 6 months "refusing" to help you with your medical bills. 1) I can't believe you would ask him to. 2) He didn't do this to you and offered to return home when you called him. 3) You don't know what HIS financial situation is and may not be in a position to help. It also seems that you were "bugging" him about it as he stopped answering your calls. I feel that your comment about "gunshine State of Florida" is some type of snide remark. I happily live in Florida and it doesn't matter where you live, or how small and homey your town is, violence can happen ANYWHERE. BTW, my doors aren't locked and one remains open all the time - nobody wants to tangle with 7 pits and I don't fear anything but if I had been in your situation, I never would have answered the door the 2nd time let alone the 3rd time - well, not unless I was holding onto a double-barrelled shotgun or a pistol and any attempt to enter noises would have been met with lead. Also, by speaking THROUGH the door (you don't these people - even if it was your friends best-buddy from HS), you can some things that might given them pause -- like, "hold on a sec, I have to put the dog in the other room for a minute because he's wanting to get out" then make a few noises like you are doing so, if it's tile floor, make some scratching noises, talk low and soft like you would to a dog, saying something you would to a pet - "Go lay down on the couch", etc. I realize this is an old video, but now you know why we respect our guns in Florida.

I think it is legal to carry a sword you just can't have intent to defend yourself. Then you have places like California where you can carry a gun openly as long as it's unloaded so it's less than worthless being the moment someone takes it they are effectively armed once they get ammunition for it
