  • When you mix a big Husky with a tiny little Pomeranian to get a Pomsky, how big is that Pomsky going to be? This video covers everything you want to know about Pomskies: how big are large Pomskies? How small are micropomskies? Are 1st generation Pomskies (f1 Pomskies) bigger or smaller than 2nd generation Pomskies (f2 Pomskies)? What about Pomskies that are not 50/50 but are 75% Husky or 75% Pomeranian (f1b Pomskies) ? How much do these Pomskies weigh? How do I calculate the full-grown adult weight of my Pomsky puppy? Do Pomsky siblings from the same litter all weigh the same thing?

      Yeah,
      I have a pomsky I got at 16 weeks. I know about Siberian Huskies and their paw sizes. My Pomsky has got to be more Husky. He has the huge Husky paws and snout. He's categorized as a Medium sized pup. He's 3 years old now. His name is Max, Max is a big fluffy pup. We live in NYC, I wanted to get another Pomsky more like companion for Max. I was told I may have to get a female because another male may cause issues such as fights over who's more dominant in the pack.

    This was such a great video! As a scientist, I appreciated how you explained variability, which to me, is more important than the average. My little girl, Celest, who is 8 weeks old (2nd generation) is arriving tomorrow, so I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos!

    This was very interesting! My family is breeding Pomskies, my first one was a 2nd generation. Then she bred with a 1st generation, and had my dog Shasta. Shasta is currently pregnant! We actually just got her DNA results, and she's 50.1% Siberian Husky and 49.9% Pomeranian! She's about 25lbs, and started the largest in her litter of 6. Then she was the smallest. And now she's in the middle! Her female siblings are all smaller besides her younger sister Mia who is a little bigger. Then her brother is bigger than her mom who's 30lbs! Her mom Kota is 50/50, so her dad must be the reason she's not exactly 50/50. They told us he was 50/50, but she's only a tenth of a percent off so it's fine. And we didn't work with them this time!
    The father to Shasta's puppies was only 8 lbs tho!! We were going for smaller pups anyways, but we'll see. ^^

      Are you in the US? If so, we highly recommend the breeder where we got Beedi. Their name is Oxsana Perfect Pomsky. Otherwise, a lot of Pomskies end up in shelters because of owners who didn't do their research properly and didn't realize what they got themselves into when getting a Pomsky puppy. If you're lucky, your local shelter may have one from time to time.

    I ran into a guy who is selling pups who’s dad is a Pomsky and mom is a husky lab mix.
    Can anyone tell me how big they think the pups may get? Are the odds closer to my pomsky’s size or will it be a bigger then her?
    I asked the person but they said they couldn’t even give me a guess if it be more on the medium odds or small odds and in the pictures they all looked like husky pups so I don’t know if there is a feature to look for.
    I know no one can say for sure but I was hoping to get a opinion of range idea like will the pup be medium large or medium small or just medium?

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  Před 2 lety

      Very hard question to answer. Food is only $1/day if they eat dry food but could be up to $2 or $3/day if they are picky and need wet food. But the treat and chew bone budget can be up to $5 or $10/day when they are puppies and need a lot of things to distracting them from getting into trouble. That budget should go down once they are adult. Then, the first year, you have all the shots, vet visits, spaying/neutering, which probably adds up to $2,000. The first year is not cheap :(

    I just purchased a Pomsky puppy that is arriving on Saturday. I was told by the breeder she would be small, around 12 - 17 lbs. (no guarantees, just an estimation based on her size now and her parents). The puppy I purchased (named Bella) is a F2 Pomsky. Bella’s mother is a F1 generation Pomsky and she weighs 16 lbs. Bella’s Father is a F1 Pomsky and he weighs 10 lbs. Bella is 8 weeks old today and she weighs 5 lbs. Her paws look small in the pictures and videos sent. She definitely looks more like a Husky than a Pomeranian (I can send pictures). James and Laurent, in your opinion, do you think the breeders weight estimation is correct? Or is this just not enough information to make any sort of estimate.

    Appreciate you're trying to explain a complex topic, but your explanation of %'s Husky/Pomeranian is not right unfortunately.
    To take an example, you've said that breeding two Pomskies will create a Pomsky which is a 50/50 mix of Husky and Pomeranian. This isn't right, in theory you could get 100% Husky or 100% Pomeranian when breeding two Pomskies! This is because you each Pomsky parent donates only one of its pair of genes, so if they both happen to donate Husky genes, then they recombine to a complete pair of Husky genes in the F2 Pomsky. Obviously it's unlikely that would happen for every pair of genes, but you get the point. This is why F2 Pomskies are less predictable in their characteristics. Several rounds of breeding Pomskies are required to reliably select for preferred traits.

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment 😘. We stand behind our explanations. We believe we are simplifying a complex topic. You believe we are oversimplifying it. We are happy to agree to disagree 😉. We have seen many Pomsky DNA tests and they rarely go beyond 53/47 one way or the other. Whenever they deviate far from 50/50, it's because one of the Pomskies was backbred at some point in the lineage. This is a video explaining Pomsky weight, not a genetics 101 video, in which case we would have been more selective with our wording 😇.

    • @bluesheep54
      @bluesheep54 Před 3 lety +1

      @@JamesandLaurent I think simplification is fine if that's the level of your main audience. However, there should be some acknowledgement that you're presenting a simplified view in the video, rather than presenting it as actual fact. Ultimately you're telling people that an F2 Pomsky is definitely going to be a 50/50 split, when we both know that a very wide range of possibilities can actually occur. In the worst case this misleading statement could lead to some people buying puppies that grow into dogs they can't handle.
