    - KINGSLEY NORTH -
    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    Some observations.
    All of the fossils you're finding are from the Hudson Bay region and were brought down by glacial ice.
    Your blue chalcedony was likely encased in dolomite which is why it didn't bubble vigorously. However, that really reminds me of something you'd find in the desert southwest, not along the shores of Lake Superior.
    Your red "mystery rock" at 11:30 could be several things, but very likely something silicified. Would have to look at it in person to hazard any reasonable guess.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem +8

      Thanks, Paul. It's always nice to have an actual geologist checking our work!
      I knew the fossils weren't from right there since there's no limestone bedrock like in Lake Huron near me. I had no idea they came all the way from Hudson Bay though. That's a fun fact!
      Thanks for the guess on the dolomite. It looked like sandstone or limestone to me. I wasn't aware that dolomite doesn't react strongly to acid. The only dolomite I'm really familiar with is Kona dolomite from Marquette.
      That mystery rock is the number one rock I'd like to have identified. I doubt there's a name for it since no one has every told me one, but there should be. It's very recognizable and very common in the eastern U.P. Everyone I go up there with picks a lot of them up, wondering if they're agates. They're clearly not agates, but they have some translucency to them that really grabs your attention. They also have several layers of what I assume are different minerals.

    I've only been in eastern Michigan once in my life, in mid-1960's, a trip to see my mother's 2nd cousins. Didn't know anything about Lake Superior Agates at that time, I've learned quite a bit since those long ago days. By the time the early 1970's came around, I had read articles in The Lapidary Journal, Rock & Gem, and least another non-technical magazine that I could understand w/o degrees in chemistry and geology. On a trip to Wisconsin, I located a rock shop and bought a bag of LSA. Cut a few pieces which have red banding and eyes. Beautiful stones.
    I'll bet you have found some interesting stones along those shores. Wherever I've traveled throughout the U.S. and eastern Canada I've always picked up stones: landscape stones alongside motels/hotels, gravel side-roads where I might have pulled over to take a break or eat a bite. Dug by fingers in the dirt, interesting looking stones. Can only guess what the mineral make-up is of these stones.
    Glad I've found your YT channel and will happily follow as you find stones to 'share'.

    Sam just had some amazing luck! He found quite a few really awesome agates! And you had a few too, but not as many as Sam found! There were quite a few not agates but were really cool and interesting looking rocks! The whole beach was covered in all different colors and types of beautiful rocks! I'm so used to our beaches and lakes here in Oregon, where 95% of the rocks are basalt so all you see is ugly dark grey to black rocks. Your beach is just an array of beautiful colors and patterns and not hardly a plain basalt rock out there! It's gorgeous! And I know the vast majority of them are granite, but they sure are a lovely granite! And they all are just so colorful! So it's no wonder that even your agates are that beautiful red! Great hunting, even though it was cold and wet, I'm sure the finds kind of made up for it, at least for Sam anyways! And that weird Rick Sam found and cut, was just strange! And it even has a weird reaction to the acid! I've never seen anything like that before! I have no idea! Thanks for sharing!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem +2

      The variety of rocks we have is just amazing. I have been to beaches where most of the rocks are the same color and it's just not as much fun. Cold and wet is just one of the things you have to deal with in the U.P. It's not a place for wimps. The great rocks make up for it.
      Sam is not just lucky. He consistently finds more than I do. I think he's just more focused than I am, plus he has younger eyes. He deserves credit for his skills.

      I have only picked rocks in Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan. I'd rank them in that order. I think Lake Superior has the highest percentage of beautiful rocks, great variety, and you can find agates. I like Lake Huron for the puddingstones and Petoskey Stones. The reason I rank Lake Michigan last is that it seems to be more picked over. You can find Petoskeys, puddingstone, and agates in Lake Michigan, but agates and puddingstones are more rare there. Honestly, I haven't hunted Lake Michigan as much as the other two, so I might just not have enough experience to know how good it is.

    IT IS A SKIP ATOM. I am going far out on a limb here, but I believe 99% of Skippers are some variation of brown, so long as they are banded. I don't know why that seems to be, but I do have one Blue that is a Skipper. It's the only exception. I REALLY love the Brown Paint of that one. That is an EXCEPTIONAL FIND in any size. I call them Dinosaur Teeth Agates because they remind me of T-REX teeth. Also one of the most optical illusional of LSA's . If you notice when you get them wet they seem 3-dimensionally layered. I sometimes think that it's the result of possibly cooling faster than normal quartzy agates. I think I think too much about the formation of the Lake Superior Agate sometimes. 😄
