- In this third and final simultaneous story of three, Sonic runs with a device to gather data for a possible Metal Virus cure. However, a chance encounter with Dr. Eggman might jeopardize this plan. #sonicthehedgehog #idwpublishing #Issue23
First, Sonic reflecting on everything that has transpired, and admitting he made a mistake letting Eggman live, letting the Bio-Analyzer be destroyed, and even on the brink of turning and becoming exhausted, he admits to being at fault to an extent.
This is actually a good thing because he is acknowledging the fact that he screwed up so much that he is as guilty for ruining the world as much as Eggman, and he admits that screwed up closer to the end of the story.
Next, can we just appreciate the fact that Sonic had the gall to knock Eggman into the crowd below, and almost become a victim of his own creation?!? I personally think after all the chaos he caused prior and up to Forces, he deserved it. But, it was nice to see him squirm when he did.
Lastly, and honestly, Starline going down his own path is pretty disturbing, but in a great way. I mean this in a way of saying that he has more to his character than being a calm, suave fanatic. He also prefers to think in the long term and prepare for the worst, a Yin to Eggman's Yang. In fact, he makes Eggman look like an cocky highschooler.

I can't believe we almost lost Soinc in this issue. This honestly made me surprised and sad while reading this.
I thought the same thing, but it is quite a welcome sight, shows that he is not untouchable.

@@splatteaverse I won't spoil anything, but the solicitations say that more and more is going to be lost, culminating in some sort of serious fight. Issues 26 and 25 allude to this in their solicitations.
Also, I agree wholeheartedly that IDW is handling this comic very well, and is selling real well;Even with the comic exclusive characters. Provided, there are no delays to come.

Neo Metal Sonic having Eggman's bio data could explain on why he had the master emerald out in the open in his metal overlord form, he cared more for power and strength rather than thinking about his possible weaknesses, something Eggman does
Which is exactly why the Kyodai Eggman Robo at the end of Sonic 3 & knuckles only ever exposes his energy source Aka the Master emerald when it was used to power up its strongest attack and even than only after Sonic and Tails already disabled the Arms..Oh wait somethings seams off here.
Dr. Eggman is someone that CAN change, that CAN be good if he really wanted to.
But he DOESN'T want to.
And at this point, I don't know if it's because he's that obsessed with taking over the world, or just because he is THAT driven to FINALLY beat Sonic after all these years.

After reading this issue, I imagined an alternate scene where Sonic questions Eggman on his return to villainy. (You can leave a comment after reading it.) It goes something like this:
Sonic: ...but you chose to go back to your old ways. What was wrong with being like Mr Tinker?
Eggman: That's not who I am.
Sonic: Not BE him. Be LIKE him.
Eggman: There was one time when I was just like him.
Sonic: So what happened? Why did you choose to return to villainy and make the villagers, who took you in and gave you a place to stay, suffer the consequences of their kind, selfless actions?
Eggman: Wait... something happened to me when I was like that goody-two-shoes.
Sonic: Yeah, I know. Beakface here seared those old memories into your brain.
Eggman: No, not that. Something else. I remember doing some simple things. Whether it was taking care of plants or fixing robots, I don't know. But then, a stranger came my way. I didn't know who or what he was, but he looked severely damaged.
Sonic: Hmm?
Eggman: I took pity on him and sought to fix him up right away, but then... something inside me broke free from its chains. My memories of that robot had returned, and then BAM! I was Dr Eggman once again.
Sonic: Severely damaged robot...? (realises) Severely... damaged... robot... (flashbacks of Metal Sonic appear) No! It can't be...!
Starline: Metal Sonic made his way to us and then the Doctor was back to his old self. (notices Sonic shivering violently) Sonic? Is something wrong?
Sonic:...What have I done?
Eggman: I'm afraid you're going to have to speak up.
Sonic: What have I DONE?! (echoes)
Eggman: You smashed up my robot and he came to me.
Sonic: He was destroyed!
Starline: What? That's impossible! How could Metal Sonic have made his way to us if he had been destroyed? (upon realisation) He had been repaired, hadn't he? (in shock) Did YOU do this?
Eggman: No. Sonic doesn't know how to fix machines, but his two-tailed friend does. Why would HE repair Metal Sonic? He wouldn't have done so without a second thought. Unless...
Eggman: (stares at Sonic in bewilderment, then smiles evilly) Oh hohoho, you are such a naughty boy.
Sonic: It wasn't supposed to happen like this. I only wanted to give him a chance to live his life however he pleases. I didn't even try to stop him when he escaped because... I wanted to respect his choice!
Eggman: Well, well, well. Looks like you and I aren't so different after all.
Sonic: I NEVER wanted to infect ANYONE with the Metal Virus!
Eggman: True, but YOU chose to have Metal Sonic repaired despite how much of a threat he was. You chose to let him escape, he came back to me and here I am. Back in the game.
Eggman: I have YOU to thank, Sonic the Hedgehog. Who would have thought that a hero's act of kindness would bring forth the downfall and destruction of the citizens of your precious world, soon to become my glorious empire?
Sonic charges at Eggman with fury.
Sonic: *furious scream of agony*
Eggman: HAHAHA! One last battle before you're my zombot slave?

He’s been like this. His pride gets in the way
If anything, Eggman serves as an example of how not to be supervillain, or taking a situation too lightly. He did both, which makes it all the more cathartic when he cowered and panicked when he was knocked to the ground, courtesy of Sonic.
@@johnoghomi1080 Than how do you explain his 205465161 back up plans he use to have in the older games be it something as simple as having multibel bases located at harder to reach places like the Sky or Space to more complex staff like having an escape pot that also holds the Death Egg Robots as an emergency for the emergency precaution at the tail end of Sonic 3&Knuckles to having entire back ups for his bigger plan overall like in Adventure were he had Chaos, the back (Egg Carrier) the back up for the Back up (Nuke) than the back up for the back of the back up (Egg Walker) and than even the Back up for the back up of the back up of the back up (the Egg Carrier 2)
Heck this place just a few days after Forces a story in which Eggman build something into his own minded servant infinite to force him to obey seen when he forces him to retreat after his final lost against Sonic and the Avatar while he wanted to fight on.

Sonic can't take this anymore. Or he will be saved by Tails, via a prototype cure, or Sonic becomes a Zombot at Spiral Hill Village.
One thing you didn't mention was Eggman's phrase of Zombot adaptation: the frequency Starline found is useless right now, and Sonic's constant running is not making the virus disappear much faster, like the virus is adapting to that kind of speed, slowly.
We get more info on the Warp Topaz, and I like it. The smallest trace of energy can result in a huge alteration; kinda like the Phantom Ruby in some way, don't you think? And Eggman doesn't care about the consequences, since he wanted to experiment it with the Chaos Emeralds. Starline is growing on me: he's a villain, but he uses all the information he has to plan a strategy, like in a chess game. We see that in his clash with Sonic and Silver, and he's worried about safety from the virus.
Yeah same always in any cliff-hanger moments.
Yeah, someone reviewed the next issue, and No, Sonic does not become a zombot, but someone else becomes one... And no, I won't say who.

I'm betting that Sonic will become a zombie. I read the synopsis of issue 27 and one of the things that it said is, "But where's Sonic?" Plus on the cover of issue 28, Sonic isn't there. Coincidence? I think not!

Starline’s Warp Topaz is OP sometimes, he can easy get all 7 Emeralds no problem, get any mystical item so easy and can go anywhere he wants with it.
Maybe the warp Topaz is the way to bring Mephiles back to the Series

I really enjoyed this issue, and the explanation you gave pretty much sums up what many people were thinking about this arc. Nothing came from it except it gives us what will happen next (Spiral Hill Village's infection, next issue), but we did get to see a possible cure, an unexpected assault, and a first encounter in a long time. On Dr. Starline, he shows to be a far more superior villain than Eggman, which is good considering we haven't gotten a good villain for a while. Thinking ahead, staying safe, even bringing in a group that Eggman previously encountered, while still staying prepared for anything. On the Deadly Six, they will either heed to Starline's control, or they resist and take full control of the Zombots.
Metal Sonic did indeed play the main factor as to how Eggman got his villainy back, but I wonder who else knows about this, and I even question if Sonic's friends knew that Sonic and Tails rebuilt Metal Sonic, thus starting this problem and causing even more conflict between them. In Sonic's defense, he and the others thought that Neo Metal Sonic was the last threat that disrupted world peace, and you know Sonic has a good heart to bring mercy to his enemies. Still, doing this led up to what they're dealing with right now, and Sonic is paying for this action by the world and his friends being infected, and himself on the verge to becoming a Zombot.
One last thing: Even though Sonic almost succumbed to becoming a Zombot in this issue, I doubt he will actually be one. IDW keeps teasing us with this, and there are also the SEGA mandates here. If they didn't want Shadow to use his full power to try and stop the infection back in issue 19, what are the odds that you will see a corrupted Sonic soon? But anyways, I can't wait for the next issue. (and sorry for making this comment very long)
I don't know. Eggman seems dumber than usual here. He certainly wasn't the kind of guy to wing it or have some backup plan.
@@andresmarrero8666 I know Eggman acted dumb. If it wasn't for Starline being there, he would have been a Zombot by now when Sonic made him drop down in the Zombot horde.

I won't be very happy if the comic issue arc ends with the Metal Virus plot (with the way everything is going so far) being 'just a dream'.
I doubt that will be the case. They have made too much progress to copout like that.
Honestly, if Sonic does end up turning, chances are he probably wouldn't be a threat due to his severe exhaustion. However, the Metal Virus could probably re-energize himself (or not, we'll see, I guess).

I feel like if Eggman brought up Metal Sonic being the one thing that turned him back to normal then Sonic would have fully given up and succumbed to the virus. He was nearly fully turned in this strip by his own guilt without that extra punch in the gut. If Sonic realized sparing Metal Sonic lead to this, he wouldn't be able to just partially blame himself while throwing shade at Starline and Eggman, Sonic would know this ENTIRE MESS was his fault. I feel like if Sonic does turn full Zombot, this will be the trigger, so they're hopefully saving that reveal for later.

I thought this series of storys would be lame. My god I have never been so invested and I don't actually know how they will top this. It's been a ride and actually sad. Seeing Sonic the more sad, unconfident and depressed sonic has been a breath of fresh air.

the truth about Eggman's return and the real reason behind it.
In fact, I wish Sonic, Starline and Eggman put the pieces of the puzzle together and found out the whole story of Eggman's (metaphorical) resurrection. But sadly, that didn't happen and
Eggman is still an idiot.
The story was good overall. It was good to see
Starline taking initiative and taking matters into his own hands due to Eggman's incompetence.
I also liked how Sonic realised that he was at fault for
the Metal Virus incident occurring, but I felt that he was blaming himself for the wrong reason.
I have said many times before that Sonic was not to blame for letting Mr Tinker live and my words still ring true to this day. I'm beginning to feel that no one will ever know
the true story behind Eggman's return to villainy.
Perhaps it served as a compassionate side, a side that was essentially pushed down, only to surface after forces. Yet, I think when Eggman was reflecting on his time as Mr. Tinker, he actually felt nostalgic or it is simply bubbling back to the surface, only to be pushed down again.

@@FrostTheHobidon Its been as helpful as much as it has been a curse. However, the stakes are getting to point where they are actually needed. Sonic almost gave in to the virus, Eggman and Starline lost a potential frequency that could control the Zombots(And Eggman narrowly evaded turning as a result). And on top of that, the heroes are spread so thin that the slightest misstep lays waste to their operations.

However they find the cure, it will be thanks to Silver's help. This is kindof a fact because in issue 8 Silver says how when he returned to his future, there was no eggman empire but there was also no people at all, everything was metallic. This means they fail without Silver from the future to help them
I mean technically did Silver already make major change by saving Sonic From zombot-ification by the hands of Shadow and Co in his original timeline would with sonic already been gone there be no hope to make a cure because Tails builds his entire Cure Idea on Sonic natural ability to fight the virus off.

@@Blurro Yes one of the problems that was carried over from Forces and the Rivals series is that there is no explanation how Silver travels through time.
Also I don't thing Silver will ever go home to the ideal future simply because he is to popular and a good future would equal him not being able to still be a part of the story.
I remember Eggman's plans being more well thought out. You do not pull even half the stuff he does by winging it.
Exactly my problem with Eggman in this series so far.
Its a far cry from the master manipulator and fail-save keeping master mind that he was since 1991 all the way to at least 2008.

If Eggman admitted that it was seeing a damaged Metal Sonic that made him go back to being himself, then he would be admitting, to Sonic, that there was nothing wrong with being Mr. Tinker; and that'ds something this iteration of the character is just to proud to do.
Am I saying Sonic should never find out how Eggman was actually brought back? No. What I am saying is that Eggman telling him (or at the very least, telling him right now) would have been forced (again, because Eggman is to proud) and pointless (Sonic is allready doubting himself because of what eggman is doing; if he found out now it wouldn't have much of an impact). A much better way for Sonic to learn the full truth would be for Dr. Starline (or Metal Sonic, if he ever gets his voice back) to taunt Sonic with it, during the grand finally of the metal virus ark; or for Sonic to learn about it during the arks aftermath. Ether from a captured Dr. Starline (or captured Metal Sonic), or from a cured Rough and Tumble. Personally I prefer the latter-latter option as, not only could this create a good moral dilemma for Sonic (especially if Rough and Tumble immediately cause some trouble after sonic cures them), but it could also crate some dramma between him and Shadow (as he will presumably be cured by then as well).
My only problem is that Sonic almost became a Zombot himself. It makes it seem like they want to do it, but Sega is not wanting main characters like Sonic, Tails, Amy, Eggman, & Knuckles to end up that way. However, I have a feeling that Chaos energy might have some effect on Sonic to burn the metal virus off. That or that Sonic gets lucky of still being himself as a Zombot, and takes advantage of it til the cure is found.

when eggman returns to normal he has no clue metal restored his memories and thus starline took the credit for it
Also, what made starlight think Eggman would just stay working with you. Eggman literally looks like that type that he doesn’t like being told what to do. He always have an attitude with anyone he works with. Eggman does this multiple time: 1) Give the person he is working with the spotlight at first(Since the plot is moving before he in on it) 2) Starts seeing the flaws in the plan when it’s executed already
3) Act like doesn’t give a sh*t the whole rest of the plot, but really he has something hidden at ready.
So Eggman is fine and dandy with starlight sh*t.
I have a feeling we will see Zombot Vector and Zombot Vanilla next issue. And we may see Blaze, Marine and Big show, but get infected. Tangle might get infected, and Whisper, given their mini series, joins Tangle's fate. And we may see Sonic finally subcome fully and become a Zombot. Knuckles might show, but get the virus, Amy would try to protect Cream, but fail: Cream will also get infected, but by her own mom. Then Amy would give up and become a zombot. Eggman would also get infected and turn to a zombot. Espio would get it to.
To bad nicole isnt in this canon, because a powerful handheld AI would have been a great help.

After thinking on it, I too feel that Metal Sonic's return should've been brought up, but if we couldn't get it now, We could get that discussion in the next issue. I could imagine that once Tails realizes that the Bio-Scanner is destroyed because Sonic did the exact opposite of what he promised to do, Tails could just snap on Sonic and during the argument, he could blurt out "I told you fixing Metal Sonic wasn't a safe idea, nor was letting him go!" of course that would give Tails the stink eye too among the other survivors since he was the one who repaired Metal Sonic which is something he most likely wouldn't want, but that could add a dynamic where Sonic's relationship with his surviving friends is now fractured because of a misguided decision to show mercy to a killer robot.
Since I know this whole Metal Virus Saga is going to end with Sonic and the others curing the virus and return everything back to normal, What I don't want to see is future issues pretending like the whole Zombocalypse almost never happened outside of name drops. This is a chance to give Sonic some much needed and long overdue character development and I would hate to see that chance go to waste because of Sega Mandates saying that Sonic can't feel like he lost something for too long.
Keep in mind, this isn't the first time a chance to give Sonic some actual development went to waste, last time I recall was Sonic Lost World, Right when Sonic was at his lowest, when Eggman was supposedly dead, the world beneath him was completely drained, and Tails was converted into a cyborg by Zavok, the writers immediately made a 180 and Tails returns to normal (without any cutscenes or dialogue showing that), the world gets restored, and Eggman being the Final Boss, as a result, Sonic didn't learn anything, he didn't grow. Cyborg Tails should've been final boss in that game and he should've stayed a Cyborg as a reminder that Sonic fucked up. Your character can't evolve and remain a strong character if he's static and isn't knocked down a peg.

Sonic: So what happened? Why did you choose to return to villainy and make the villagers, who took you in and gave you a place to stay, suffer the consequences of their kind, selfless actions?
Eggman: Wait... something happened to me when I was like that goody-two-shoes.
Sonic: Yeah, I know. Beakface here seared those old memories into your brain.
Eggman: No, not that. Something else. I remember doing some simple things. Whether it was taking care of plants or fixing robots, I don't know. But then, a stranger came my way. I didn't know who or what he was, but he looked severely damaged.
Sonic: Hmm?
Eggman: I took pity on him and sought to fix him up right away, but then... something inside me broke free from its chains. My memories of that robot had returned, and then BAM! I was Dr Eggman once again.
Sonic: Severely damaged robot...? (realises) Severely... damaged... robot... (flashbacks of Metal Sonic appear) No! It can't be...!
Starline: Metal Sonic made his way to us and then the Doctor was back to his old self. (notices Sonic shivering violently) Sonic? Is something wrong?
Sonic:...What have I done?
Eggman: I'm afraid you're going to have to speak up.
Sonic: What have I DONE?! (echoes)
Eggman: You smashed up my robot and he came to me.
Sonic: He was destroyed!
Starline: What? That's impossible! How could Metal Sonic have made his way to us if he had been destroyed? (upon realisation) He had been repaired, hadn't he? (in shock) Did YOU do this?
Eggman: No. Sonic doesn't know how to fix machines, but his two-tailed friend does. Why would HE repair Metal Sonic? He wouldn't have done so without a second thought. Unless...
Eggman: (stares at Sonic in bewilderment, then smiles evilly) Oh hohoho, you are such a naughty boy.
Sonic: It wasn't supposed to happen like this. I only wanted to give him a chance to live his life however he pleases. I didn't even try to stop him when he escaped because... I wanted to respect his choice!
Eggman: Well, well, well. Looks like you and I aren't so different after all.
Sonic: I NEVER wanted to infect ANYONE with the Metal Virus!
Eggman: True, but YOU chose to have Metal Sonic repaired despite how much of a threat he was. You chose to let him escape, he came back to me and here I am. Back in the game.
Eggman: I have YOU to thank, Sonic the Hedgehog. Who would have thought that a hero's act of kindness would bring forth the downfall and destruction of the citizens of your precious world, soon to become my glorious empire?
Sonic charges at Eggman with fury.
Sonic: *furious scream of agony*

I mean Character develorpment for main stays is pretty much outlawed since 06.
Beside that does Lost worlds setup not even make any sense to begin with (Sonic and Tails running away from a few sonic 1 badniks and the so called Deadly Six alone makes no sense, and the whole framing of Sonic being to impatient and doesn't thing far enough ahead also makes no sense given that Tails was always the more naive one just thing back to SA2 when Eggman had Sonic at Gun point, Sonic and Tails non-verbale agreed on a plan to deceive Eggman only for Eggman to pull the rug under them and tricking Tails intro revealing that Sonic has a fake chaos emeralds which was a naive mistake that Sonic imminently realized shown by him screaming tails to him revealing this information to Eggman. so really the story at its core just falls apart)
And the Same can really be said about this story from Sonic and Tails conveniently forgetting to remove the OBEY EGGMAN part out of Metal Sonic's program making this a disaster waiting to happen over not going after Eggman's face-ship in the Tornado as soon as the problem escalates to many many more problems like the complete absents of Wispowns despite the fact that cube would almost trivialize the problem of the zombot virus or that no ones even thing about putting on a bio-hazard suit or the like to prevent infection (And yes I know that the ruling if Zombots can infect non organic objects is as inconsistent as it gets but no ones even tried it or hell just go with an Ironman suit we know for a fact that metal is save)

and i'll be fair to lost world in that it tried to give him some kind of character flaw to develop from instead of in rush or something where he's perfect in every way there is.

While I see your point that Lost worlds at least tried to have character development do I still simply prefer an overly good character over giving him flaws he never had and contradict what we see before.
I to a smaller extend had the same issue in Sonic SatAm were Sonic would change from a cautions, smart and serious character to a total goof ball between seasons 1 and 2 to artificially make Sally a more important character.

what if that's the main point of character development after this story? everyone just start wearing protective jumpsuits when on a mission from the now on and the idw continuity will be known as the "sonic jumpsuit-verse".
that's fair and the SatAm point you brought up makes sense, i myself don't know how i'd react if a story gives a character a flaw they didn't have before, but it ended up being a really good story, though i think i would be okay with it so long as it would be explained, again, not sure.
