At last ... a video about the Haven without a pad !
I did it, and I do not recommend anyone else try it!
I use a $2 mylar emergency blanket under the pad with the sides climbing up above the sides of the pad. That way you still breathe and don;t die of hyperthermia if the mylar was next to your skin and it keeps the pad better insulated. A down top quilt to 17F (-10C) on top and toasty warm at 24F (-5C). My Haven XL arrives next week so I will try that out with it but the kit works on the ground and in a regular hammock.
Haven now offers an insulated cover for their insulated pad which adds additional warmth and rigidity to their pad. It cuts down on noise and makes the pad more comfortable to lay on. Also, Onewind's large under blanket will fit the hammock reasonable well. For really cold camping you can also add a Onewind top blanket to the under blanket (they will snap together) to make the under blanket a sub-zero setup. Also, I use a mylar coated (dual sidee) bubble insulation (about 3/16" thick) under my pad for additional insulation. All are rather economical and easily installed. Downside as usual is weight. All are great options for car camping though.
Thermarest Mondo XXL pad is 30” wide and Kernel Lee says it works great, only drawback is how big it packs down to, but if you’re on a motorcycle like me, that’s not as important. I think side sleeping with the Haven pad is great, I like that it folds a little bit in the middle, that gives me support in the back and on my stomach. My friend uses a Lawson under quilt with his Haven and says it works great
Right on, glad you're enjoying it. And yes, being on a motorcycle gives you better carry options, although not a ton more room honestly!

This is why i went with a eno skylite hammock and the eno profly lighter and you can use any air mattress you want
Thermarest NeoAir Luxe comes in 30” wide and has correct baffles and is much lighter than the haven pad and with a space blanket, I have been comfortable really cold. Nemo pads don’t work well cause of shoulder squeeze.

I also use the NeoAir Luxe pad in my Haven XL.
Lays flat and never leaks.
I will add that Haven has addressed the issue with leaky pads with a newer lighter addition.
It would take a lot to get me out of my Warbonnet.

I put the reflectect underneath the pad, i also use the cheap Mylar blanket to hang above ridge line, it helps hold heat in for cold weather, also have a sleeping bag I use as well
It looks like if you had to sleep with this hammock tent in very cold weather, you could always put a Mylar blanket under the pad, rig up an under quilt, and/or set up a hot tent around it.
I like the idea of using the reflectix to re-use your heat.
It's a good way to supplement your system.
Thanks for taking the extra step on this review. The BA Q-Core Deluxe has an extra large size of 30" x 78" and an R of 4.3; the differential baffles on this pad may provide the needed stability as well.

Nah, right now the Towns End Luxury UL is my favorite!
I have the regular Haven and sleep on my side 95% of the night. The smaller pad does not have the same crease issue as the XL and your butt is off to the side a little more so the issue is almost mute. I am going to try some other pads as well. It seems there are more available for the regular Haven to try out. I give the regular Haven 5 stars with the only issue being the zipper as you have described. I did a little hack using a length of zing-it so I don't have to reach up to pull it to get out when nature calls. I sleep really, really well. I think my wife might even try this, also.
Good tip with a line attached to the zipper. Does the normal give you enough room?
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Yes.. 5'10" 170. It's about perfect for me. I'm not too wide except around my gut (beer, of course) and the regular works out well.

Klymit static v lux works great in it. Haven pad keeps deflating making me a banana. So I went and found the klymit and it’s 30 in wide and 78 in tall
I love the Haven XL but find the weak spot is the matt. It does deflate and that really deteriorates teh sleep. Still better than a banana gatehred end hammock. I had my Haven XL for a couple of months then bought the heldson Hammock and prfer that, if only for the 2 minute set up and no reliance on a matt.
Idea!!! Use that reflectix bubble wrap. Can get a 16'x24" on Amazon for $30. Supposedly its an R Value of 4.2. Put that under or on top of the pad.
I have a roll of it and was thinking about cutting some to try.
I used Reflectix, Nemo switch back and fleece sleeping bag liner. Once I even used all 3 at the same time and still had cold butt, +/-25°.
I have the regular Haven and a therm-a-rest Xtherm long wide fits perfectly.
@@JerryHernandez curious: did you have the reflectix on top of the Haven pad or below it? I'm thinking on top would be faster to warm up, but could lead to condensation/sweat and make you colder. Under would (I think) be a better option, but would take a while to warm up the air in the pad, and once you got out for that 3 AM nature call, it'd take a long time to build the heat back up.
I'm thinking of making my own uninsulated pad using 75D TPU like they make packrafts out of. Should be thinner & higher pressure than the Haven pad.
I do have a 30" Klymit air mattress, haven't tried it yet.
As for insulation , you can just slip a sheet of reflectix underneath the pad.

Haven makes an insulated pad cover for their standard size hammock that adds insulation to their 24 inch pad. Hopefully they will make one for the pad in the XL hammock. This might make it better for colder weather. Otherwise how about using a wool blanket on top of or under the pad?
The fleece sleeping bag that I used around the pad didn't make enough difference and it's pretty thick/heavy.
If you don’t mind the extra weight, couldn’t you just throw another pad on top of the haven one?

It might be interesting to try the Exped Megamat Wide or the Nemo Roamer XL-- both are 30" wide and seem to resist curling.

Great stuff as usual. I'm in my mid 50's and think it's time to switch from a tent to a hammock. Any trustworthy sites you can suggest to buy used gear? Or do a video about it. I've heard you mention before that you have resold equipment. Thanks!

Hi , I tried the Haven in the woods last week and my experience was dreadful, the pad just kept riding up out of the corner retainers, in the end I got out, took the mat and slept under a tarp, I will revisit this, tweak, adjust, etc. At 71 with health issues it was very not good ! any advice .......cheers and love
So sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. Was the pad aired up all the way? The key to keeping the shape of that hammock is all in the full inflation of the pad. not sure what other tweaks it might need.
Exped MegaMat 10 has almost the same size. And is even some mm wider. Would be interesting to see how this performs.
Did you ever see how the exped mega mat 10 worked out? I see this post is over a year old but I’m wondering too.

Would it have helped lying diagonally as much as possible with no pad? You just laid there symmetrically in the centre - the number 1 rule NOT to do in every hammock.
Not in the case of a bridge hammock, which is what this is. That is the number 1 rule of a gathered end hammock. You lay straight in a bridge, due to the bars you can only lay in the middle.
