He reportedly had vocal lessons around 97' before the recording of Adore, his voice got much better live too, especially the Adore tour, less screaming and less hammy rants.
They didn't play any heavy rock songs on the Adore tour, that's why he didn't scream. You think he wouldn't scream in Bullet with butterfly wings and so forth?
i recommend trying to find the Guitar School magazine interview with him that coincided with Adore's release. He was very honest, realistic, and quite humble about his voice. Calling out one's own voice is not easy :)
Billy Corgan's voice sounds exactly the same live as it does in studio recordings which is odd since most vocal tracks go through a lot of cosmetic changes in production to make them sound better than the singer ever would in real life.
Not a single bad song from that album. An absolute masterpiece.

Far more than any other album I've listening to this one for 20 years. Through good times and bad its been the most consistent thing in my life.
