If you've ever wanted to hear Sleep with Al's bass drowning everything else out, then this is the video for you. Matt Pike is barely audible, and the vocals are non-existent. After the show someone said the bass and guitar weren't fed through the PA, it was all on-stage sound. That makes sense, because I was directly in front of the line of bass cabinets. Anyway, let's be honest - if I have to hear only one member of Sleep, I would choose Al, so I guess it worked out?
very distinct player, Al is. Him and Pike are the epitome of heavy metal, the distilled end product of half a century of metal and punk and psychedelic music. Beautiful like gnarled old trees and scorched motor oil, peat bog corpses and ancient fossils.
Forgetting bout Ben hakius. Sleep would not be sleep without Ben

Most guitar cabs (and bass cabs) will really beam the high end, it’s just how they’re designed and how those frequencies travel. Bass is omnidirectional so it fills the room better. If this cammer walked along the front of the stage, once they got in front of Pike’s first ear-level cab would get their head sheered off lol

I was at this show in Charlottesville and Matt Pike threw me a Sleep guitar pick at the end of the set. He probably threw 5-10 out into the crowd, but how many were guitarists?...
I still use that same pick to play Sleep and High on Fire riffs, to perfection, to this day...

It was about 9:30pm, with one opening band. But I wouldn't necessarily count on that being the same for gigs 3 months apart.
