- ( duckco.com/tfl-store ) Check out TFL's new apparel store now! The 2021 Toyota Corolla brings minor changes to the lineup, which is no bad thing since it's one of the best-selling affordable small cars around. Even better: You can get some versions with a manual transmission! But is the fully-loaded, CVT-only XSE model as sporty and fun as Toyota would have you believe? Roman and Tommy find out in this buddy review.

He's Roman and he's Tommy, and we're going for a drive!!!🚗💨💨💨💨 Great review guys! Great to see Toyota committed to the sedan segment and even better to have a manual option!!👍🏼#TFL #FloorIt #SaveTheManuals
@Richard Favreau They test a mile above sea level, that handicaps a naturaly aspirated engine while a turbo-/supercharged engine won't suffer as much.
I've never driven a car with CVT that i would call fun or engaging, but with age one do start to appreciate comfort, smoothness and mpg a lot more, that's where CVT shines.
@Richard Favreau I haven't driven Civic with CVT so I don't know.
I had a Corolla SE as a loaner for a day and absolutely fell in love with it. Toyota really upped their game. These new Corollas are a level above the previous generation. It's not a sports car, but it certainly didn't feel that slow to me. I found it fun and sporty to give. This XSE version will be my next car for sure! And, as a naturally aspirated Toyota, it'll last forever.
I think most people who buy a car with a CVT aren't remotely aware that they have a CVT. Nor could they tell you what it means.
Guy ha 200k on his car. I ask how's the cvt? What's that? U change the fluid? It needs 2 b changed? Lol
Agree with you 100%. They wouldn't know.. but come on Toyota, nissan, Honda and some American cars. I dont care what manufacturer. CVTs are TRASH. Stop making cvts
@@TiredIron1745 They're completel horse shit! I used to envy the Nissan Maxima. Then the did cvt
@@TiredIron1745 thats true, if only the idea of a high performance cvt was true which is impossible. 🤣
Im talking about how a cvt in theory is the best transmission because it would be able to max the torque and power on all rpm levels.
I don’t care about CTV tbh
I don’t care how reliable they are, but 30k for a Corolla....ridiculous
*cries in Canadian prices*
The new Nissan Sentra is only 21.6k for the top trim SR. Even if you add the premium package it's only 25k.
Yeah a fully loaded Corolla should be in the low 20k range.
Richard Favreau my 2020 SE was 19k before taxes.
Richard Favreau the SE is the sweat spot for the Corolla trims, and no complaints from me at all. It’s been a really solid car so far.
The 2L dynamic force engine having a physical first launch gear should be mentioned. Reduces that CVT-ness off the launch.
All cvt's shud do this.
it's still ultra gentle with that physical first gear... i've got the 2019 hatch and flooring it from a standstill isn't exciting at all
@Richard Favreau oh it's extremely easy to drive... It's a Corolla afterall. It's fun to drive in a sense because the CVT is really responsive to throttle input, aside from 1st launches. The suspension is forgiving and soft riding, but drives like a car should, not lofty like an SUV. I can't comment on its true reliability because the CVT and 2.0 engine are new designs, but given Toyota's past records, I would believe it to be reliable.
@Richard Favreau hope you enjoy it! Cheers 🍻
I just bought one 21 hatchback se nightshade 11-02-20
Romans condescending attitude towards this car and the ppl who can't afford 400hp V8 manual cars is horrible. Review the car for what it is not for what it isn't.
The problem with that is it costs more than a GTI. So I'm condescending to anyone who buys this car. I mean you can get a GTI, civic Si, veloster N, you'd be nuts to buy this.
Jeff K The car is actually about $26,700 including destination charge at full sticker price if you don’t add needless fluff option packages and dealer accessories. From there, you can get a few thousand dollars off after dealer discounts and any factory rebates. It doesn’t cost more than a GTI and it will spend a lot less time in the shop getting repairs than a GTI.
Two words: arrested adolescence. lol.
Sales don't lie. Maybe you can ask all the people who buy a Corolla why they buy it. Most likely because they are reliable and roomy and many people just want a basic transportation from point A to B. Not to mention some of those hot hatches are only available in manual which many people cannot even drive. Most Corollas are also cheaper than those hot hatches if you look at the base models. Not everyone buy the fully loaded model.
I think he gave a good assessment. I hear what you are saying also. I don’t care for the low profile stuff. I guess I look at getting more mileage out of a set of tires and generally speaking the less sidewall the less mileage. And also for that that amount of money there should be more standard stuff. Although I think that the car looks better than older generations. There are 2 Corollas in the family, the thing I find is for me how hard it is in getting in and out, especially getting out. It feels like you’re sitting on the ground. I don’t care for the CBT either, however overall, it still is a good reliable vehicle.
It will reach 115mph no problem until the governor kicks in, i use the shifting feature when taking off from a red light, getting on the highway, engine braking downhills, upshifting in snow helps a little to not spin the tires and accelerating in general changes the feel of a cvt when you shift. Cvt will stay at 6k rpms and slowly accelerate when you shift if makes it feel better
The CVT has a launch gear! Don’t forget!
Lol I really hope these are troll comments, the fact that it has a CVT is the lowest selling point of the car. A simulated launch gear adds little to no value.
Especially not for that measly sub 160 wheel hp with a 13 sec 0-60 sorry Corolla lovers
This car is pathetic, spend your money on a real car 🤷♂️ I mean look at the Honda Civic, quite a bit larger better to drive quite a bit quicker better transmission choices and the Mazda is the same and now with an even quicker version on its way into production, and the vastly superior interior of Mazda products. Don’t buy this dated toyota
@Richard Favreau I'm promoting a civic that I believe to have a superior CVT with far better fuel economy to that of the Corolla and a manual transmission offering unlike that of the corolla, so who are you trying to fool?
If you knew anything about CVT's you would know it one continuous gear and it simulates gears to the driver to control engine speeds and rpm's, as far as the launch gear, it simulates the feeling of a first gear in a normal transmission and it essentially shifts the CVT to be controlled by a normal gear and it is built to increase off the line efficiency by reducing the load of the engine and it automatically switches back to the CVT belt when up to speed. It was not built for any intentions of increased performance, It feels faster because it is controlling the load the engine and speed of the RPMs by giving it a first gear. Nothing that special, nothing that is all that desirable compared to a standard CVT.
If you even remotely read or understood my comment you would have seen that I very clearly stated that the Mazda has a new engine option offering far more power than the corolla, I am referring to the 2.5T that has already been confirmed by mazda and multiple journalists have talked about it. The reality is this is a 2020 corolla that has done nothing to innovate aside from adding a first gear for better efficiency. How about you educate yourself before making an ass out of yourself my friend, oh and since I'm sure you wont take the time to look up the new Mazda 3 here are the power numbers(227hp, 310lb/ft) these walk all over the measly 169bhp, which in reality puts 140 to the wheels if that. I'm sure you also didn't know that being how little you know about cars as it is, and since you will try to argue the civic (180hp) which is underrated from the factory as all honda motors are. I could easily tell you several things more about what makes the civic and mazda3 superior but since I'm sure you won't fully read this comment, just as you did with the last comment. I won't entertain this conversation any further, numbers, specs, features, and performance don't lie and the corolla is lacking on all fronts try and prove me wrong.
@Richard Favreau You say that but not all specs are available in a manual transmission for the corolla, I don't believe I needed to specify that the corolla has a manual offering as it was clearly stated in the beginning of this video.
I stated the civic was a superior option and elaborated to you on why that is, since you decided to mention the Civic's CVT option. To be even more clear I never once stated I like any CVT, I will bash any car with a CVT because in terms of performance it is an undesirable option. That does not mean I can't admit that some CVT's are superior than others.
I was speaking specifically about the corolla because the corolla is behind the competition, In my last comment I gave you several reasons why. Yes the launch gear was a good addition for both improved acceleration and efficiency but not enough to make the corolla CVT a more desirable option than the competition. Regarding the mazda, you can go ahead and say it competes directly with the civic type R in terms of price but it does not as msrp starts at 29k, and if I am not mistaken the exact corolla in this video as tested was priced at 30k. You tell me which car you would spend your 30k on? and if we want to compare msrp's the corolla XSE starts at 25k and type R starts at 36k with prices exceeding 46k. The mazda 3 is not built as a sports sedan as you claim and you would know that also if you read anything journalists have said or even mazda themselves have said. It is a mainstream compact sedan with a higher performance trim, just as the corolla XSE is and the Civic Sport is. It offers far better performace, creature comforts and awd for around the same price as a fully loaded XSE you tell me where your 30k is going? That sounds like competition to me, power numbers may be higher but people care about price and how much they get for there money making this new mazda 3 2.5T a direct competitor to the XSE and Civic sport regardless, with how close in price they are. In order to get the 2.5T you have to go to the max trim which as I stated starts at 29k and that comes with a multitude of options as standard in the trim and has 1 option for tech package meaning the price of the 2.5T likely won't exceed 33k and that is not including incentives and dealer discounts which you are far more likely to get at Mazda than you are Toyota. To put into perspective Mazda's dealer discounts and incentives, my friend just purchase a brand new Mazda 6 in the signature trim(highest trim level with 2.5T) with all discounts and incentives OTD was just under 30k with a 0% interest rate. My point is he got a brand new sedan an entire class above the XSE for the same price as this tested XSE. Mazda does this with all of their models as a family member of mine got a signature trim CX-9 with the 2.5T for 36k OTD, if you take those 2 deals as any reference. I would expect to see OTD prices as low as 27-28k for the Mazda3 2.5T making it the best option in the segment which includes both the Corolla XSE and Civic sport based on price.
@@Meqanicull first of all, the 0-60 time is not actually 13 seconds. That's at high elevation, slightly uphill, with 3 big guys in the car. The real 0-60 time is 8.1 seconds. Second, how does the Civic have better transmission options? It has a CVT an an optional manual, just like a Corolla.
@Richard Favreau It adds a much more natural feeling when leaving a stop, which is my biggest complaint with CVTs. Once the car is moving I don't mind them.
2 pipes out for 1 muffler = NOT dual exhaust. HA.HA.HA ( according ta us old timers, HA.HA.HA )
DoC.Christopher Thompson so true.
The corvette has 2 mufflers and 4 exhaust tips. Would you consider that dual exhaust???
*These new corollas are starting to look very promising. Especially the hatchback :)* 👍
They should have made the hatchback faster than 170 hp they could have atleast gave it 190 horsepower they owe it to us for how much we pay..anyway the corolla GR is coming next year turboed we will see..
yea except the CVT is dog shit for anything other than highway cruising
Great car I have a 2020 Corolla get about 40-42 mpg
I just priced a 2020 SE Camry AWD w/ the cold weather package. MSRP is $29235.
29K for a Corolla is nonsense.
Right Lane Hog I totally agree they are no justification for this high price it’s just ridiculous really.
I'm looking at the XLE camry awd, for 32k. Why... carolla.??
The car doesn’t sell for $30K. You can barely get the sticker to $29K with every factory option. If you just get it without extra packages, the full sticker with destination charge is under $27K and there are big discounts available from there.
Don’t compare a discounted Camry price to a fully loaded Corolla price at full sticker plus dealer accessories. That’s dumb.
I bought the 2020 Corolla earlier this year and I think it's a great value. I paid only $18.4k for the mid level trim ($21k after tax/fee). I mostly use it for long drives and get mid 40s MPG and have even hit as high as 50 MPG when driving long 55 MPH highway stretches (and mine is the non-hybrid). The built in voice commands are a little clunky, like almost every car, but once you plug in your phone you can just use Siri by hitting the voice command on the wheel and that works 10x better and you get the option of using Apple or Google Maps on the display. The Toyota safety technology package is also standard which was a huge selling point for me. The adaptive cruise control is a game changer for long drives and you also get blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, pedestrian/cyclist alert (auto braking), and a back--up camera. The value for your money is very high with this car.
I totally agree with everything you mentioned there especially the gas millage
I just looked at the Toyota site and you can get an XSE trim Corolla with a manual transmission. None of my local dealers (out to 50 miles from me) actually have one, but at least Toyota offers it.
Well I'll tell you , I've had 7 toyota's and loved them all. They are trouble free.
They are SO good
I love old Toyotas but most of these new ones are passionless. If you’re all about 10 year reliability the by all means enjoy you soulless Corolla.
@@jasswear8911 I am enjoying my soulless one week old Tundra. Has the new truck smell...the smell of quality.

Mike Foehr I guess you don’t understand. Your Decade old design Toyota Tundra IS one of the old ones. Have you looked at the dash?
Wow now even a Corolla is 30K, New cars are Waaaaay too expensive
I used my Costco discount to get a 2020 Sonata Limited fully loaded for 30,400 with no negotiations needed. It is a lot more car than this Carolla and Toyota dealers don't like discounting their cars.
I got a 2020 xse hatch for $22800
Tool0GT92 that’s more like it!
Dryloch a Hyundai/Kia over a Toyota? I’m never making that mistake again.
I think owning a Corolla at some point in life is like most of us saying our first job was at McDonalds. When my '17 RAV4 lease was coming up I drove the '20 and was ok but not wowed by it. I dove Tacoma and Camry, but for some reason, driving the "20 Corolla xse was my favorite. The Corolla just does everything well.
If it’s not a big truck, then it sucks, is what I get from TFL car reviews
I used my cvt to pass ppl. I would shift at red line but also I like how fast it simulated shifts in manual mode.
I don't know why people are complaining lol, a fully loaded civic with the 1.5 costs about the same the Mazda 3 costs even more, so is the Kia and Hyundai counterparts, the only car that's really cheaper than the rest is the Nissan Sentra
You guys forgot to mention that the automatic transmission in the Corolla XSE is unique. It features a real 1st gear, then it transitions to the CVT. I have a 2020 Corolla Hatchback XSE with this transmission and it drives nice. Makes it feel positive off the line like a regular automatic, then is smooth like a CVT. And averages 34 mpg all around.
It still drones like a blender.
I have the 2020 xse .I love it... smooth and dependable. Jbl sounds 👍
Good morning 🌞 Roman and Tommy!!...I see these all the time...mostly in red... seen few white ones..don't know much about them.. but Iv heard their Excellent runners..Thanks guys☺️🏁🏁🏁
I really like the color - would be a great truck color I think
I own a Forester XT and I regularly use the paddles for downshifting, mostly on highway off ramps though. Not normally in town. I don’t love the transmission but it’s certainly not a deal breaker. It works very well with the turbo engine IMO.
An important question is a ride quality, quiet, and NVH.
Has it moved up to Camry or Accord quality or is it still a just a terrific entry level transportation pod?
For everyone complaining about the price tag at the end of the day after the discounts you pay 24k or 26k.

Good choice.
Roman’s reaction to CVT, ‘priceless’. 🙂. I hate CVTs as well. I learned to drive on a manual Toyota, so automatics are the max i can do but CVTs, i am out, no sir, just no.🤯
Cvt with manual mode is actually great because a lot of people cry when it stays at redline like it’s supposed to... so the paddles definitely make it more enjoyable and fun when driving it in a sporty fashion even my mom uses the OD off button and the L mode in her 2014 pathfinder she finds it nice when passing people and going up hill. I rented a 2020 Corolla driving to Florida from nj and the car basically drove the whole way with the adaptive cruise and lane keep assist... loved the car and found myself using the “B” mode in it to keep the RPMS higher also had a race with an 07 Silverado that was lifted and we were dead even but when the corolla got to redline he was getting beat... and that was the 1.8😂 think it’s silly that he wouldn’t give it a buy it because the doesn’t lose power by shifting like a geared trans
Hi Roman & Tommy, I have a 2016 Honda Accord Sport; i use the paddle shift in snow especially when going down hill to hold back the car in a lower gear. I agree with Roman, thx Tommy NJ
this vs trd Camry
the trd is only 3k more
Right!
Wow
I have a 2012 Altima SL with a CVT and I use the manual mode with mine to get the RPMs when merging. It makes it more fun to drive once the RPMs build
We have three cars... A Hyundai Santa Fe (6 speed auto), a Honda Accord (6 speed manual), and a Honda Civic (CVT). In the Santa Fe I only use the manual mode when I drive down from the mountains into work (about 5 miles of 7% grade), the Civic doesn't have a manual mode so we use the L gear on the grade (Seriously the best engine braking I've ever had in a car... Down a 7% grade I need to press the gas to maintain freeway speed), and in the Accord... I use 4th gear on the grade but even then that transmission does absolutely nothing for engine braking.
Other than driving down that grade, I leave the automatic cars in D and save the shifting for when I'm in the Accord.
I paddle shift my CVT in the mountains when I have it loaded, roof top tent, and trailer hauling Dirt Bikes to keep it from constantly "fake" shifting between two ratios. Otherwise I leave it in "Performance" mode on my XT Forester which just makes it holder a better RPM.
I use it for towing our boat to keep the revs up for large uphills.
I want to lease the 2021 Toyota Corolla xse in NJ. What would be a good deal?
100% I use the shifter in my wife’s cvt all the time. It’s the only thing that makes the car not boring. I’ve even done a drift in the rain lmao. The car hated it and didn’t want to do it but it was funny. I think it something they should never get rid of.
Roman wants the power of his red model Y Tesla to be in a Corolla come on Roman! It’s a Corolla !!!
I got my wife a 2020 xse hatchback with a manual and the dealership was happy to give us a deal on it.
Good choice, the manual hatchback is the best way to go.
@@rightlanehog3151 they are coming out with a turbo GR model soon too
@@Tool0GT92 I heard about that as well. My Corolla engine has 126 hp so your 168 hp engine is already a big jump. Your new one will also beat my gas mileage. Yours also has a better suspension and all sorts of additional safety gear. All in all your hatch is a sensible performance package. My only complaint about the new generation is the greatly reduced headroom and legroom. Park you hatch beside a Matrix and you will see it is about 6 inches lower. At 6'3" I literally do not fit in a new Corolla.
@@rightlanehog3151 yes the hatch has a small back seat for adults and the hatch socks. I have my crv if we need to carry anything bigger.

Hows the handling? Is it too soft?
I use manual mode on a CVT for engine braking all the time, especially in LA traffic. 1 it saves the brake pads and 2 police won’t get you since if you brake they think you’re tailgating and not in traffic even when there is.
We like our 2020 Corolla Hatchback. Also like the "tablet stuck to dash" design of the radio, we find it is a convenient place to hang your hand when fiddling with the radio, keeps the hand steady when driving and adjusting items on the radio.
But, the 2.0 engine is SLOW. Doesn't feel like 168hp, feels more like 110hp. Car isn't even very heavy!
Jason W the unreliable cvt is what hampers the acceleration. Needs the 8 speed automatic from the Camry and it would be bulletproof reliability
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 the 2.0 engine doesn't have the "unreliable" CVT, it has the new CVT with a real first gear. The 1.8 has the single stage CVT. However, I don't like any CVT. I'd rather have the traditional automatic. The best CVT in the world would only last half as long as a good automatic.
Jason W agreed
I hate to be "that person," but you should have gotten the manual. I also have a 2020 Corolla hatchback, and I bought it without even knowing how to drive a manual (dealership delivered it to my house at no extra cost after I wrote the check). I taught myself to drive it by watching stick shift instructional videos on CZcams. It was incredibly easy to learn on this car. I'm a 35 year old woman, by the way, so if I can learn, then anyone can. :) This car feels like it has a lot of power. It takes off fast from a stop, and accelerates quick when merging onto the highway. I never test drove the CVT, but it sounds like the CVT neutered the power. Even if your dealership didn't have the manual on the lot, they can do a factory order it for you, in any color or trim level you want. You just have to be patient (I had a three month wait between when the car was ordered, and when it arrived). By the way, I've also come to love the tablet stuck on dash radio. I thought it looked ridiculous at first, but I'm finding that it is very convenient to have the radio controls higher up, closer to eye level.
@Richard Favreau I don't blame you for thinking I was a dude. There are very few female enthusiasts out there. Cars are usually viewed as a "guy thing." I enjoy the experience of driving, and I think cars are really cool machines. I finally got a manual car this year, because I wanted to experience a different way to drive a car. And no regrets, it turned out to be just as fun as looks! Anyway, I got my first hamster on my tenth birthday, and except for a pause while I was in college, I've continuously had a pet hamster. They're just so cute and entertaining. Unfortunately, they only live a couple years. When one passes away, I get another. So, that's a lot of hamsters over the past 25 or so years.
Lease if you flip cars in under 5 years. Buy a year or 2 older to save some $ and keep it for 20 years. :).
I always use the "Sport" in my 2016 civic to use the engine braking since I'm usually racing around everywhere. It seems to be nicer to my break wear
Yeah I’ve got a Subaru with the CVT with manual mode and it’s good for winter driving.

Wait doesnt the camry have 300 hp to the corollas 169 ?
$30,000 after taxes and dealer fees for a Corolla is ridiculous. 13.4 seconds to 60?????? Will the CVT last to 200,000 miles? Not even very quiet. Why would anybody buy this small car?
Adam Duncan Unfortunately lots of sheeple are uninformed and will buy one because their family member bought a Toyota 30 years ago and it was reliable. The problem is 30 years ago the US automakers were building unreliable crap during the “malaise” era for cars. Toyota saw the opportunity to hit the market extremely hard with a reliability campaign that has lasted all these years later. Today, Toyota is no more reliable than anything else. But watch, this comment will get a ton of dislikes from Toyota fans. Thats how well that campaign was in the 80s
@Richard Favreau those who pay 30k for corollas have no negotiation skills. Most people on these threads they are forgetting that the lower trim corollas like L, LE,SE they are way below 23k msrp. Myself i got LE with bells and whistles for 16k lol

Yes, the old ones with proven technology and relatively inexpensive are great. This new CVT $30,000 is not proven and definitely not inexpensive.
I have to 2020 se with the CVT. I get the rated 0 to 60 around 8 sec. Negatives are not enough storage, no android auto , cloth seats arent comfortable . Positive are better than rated MPG, over 40 city, can fit 4 adults pretty good, handling is good. Its a solid choice and 2021 now has android auto, the cvt is ok in about 90% of cases. Were ive seen its weakpoints is if u dont come to a near complete stop it wont takeoff in the Physical 1st gear leaving u dead for about 3-4 sec then ur moving. Also when you do takeoff in the physical 1st gear depending on wear it shifts to the cvt theres a jerk/harsh shift. So between 2000ish to 2600ish is were this occurs. Higher or lower then this your gold. That 1st gear shud be in all cvts it does make a difference. 👍🏽
The combined weight of father and son will be over 400 lbs and we don't know how much the back seat camera operator weighs.
It shifts back into first gear around 20 mph i know this because I can feel it slightly when I’m slowing down. Are you sure your car is operating properly? My cars shifts are seamless and if I drive easy I can’t even feel the first shift most of the time.
@Richard Favreau there not really bad there average seats, i have a soar back sometimes so i cant fully sa its the car. I wud still get the cvt cause im use to it.
@@tails300 Right if u drive it easy i dont feel shifts, its wen its in that rpm range. On toyota forum theres post about this, its not just me. If you think it shifts back into that gear at 20 then slow down to under 10mph and try n takeoff again and let me know😉.
Darnell C I have, no harsh shifts and no lag, like I said maybe your cars transmission isn’t working right 🙃.

The Corolla is meant to be an affordable economy car. They want to have more options but 30k is too much for what it is. That 2.0l layout looks exactly like the 2.5l in the camry.

In Europe we have got the same corolla with Hybrid version with higher trims. I bought one it is perfect about 25k it's one the best desitions I have made reliability, durable. You hate the CVT but the petrol prices in Europe.....
Not sure if we can call the muffler a DUO exhaust. Is 1 but duo pipes. Love your honest reviews and for $30k, please lease it. Most kids will buy the Civic or Mazda 3. Older people won't buy the xse, They'll prefer the boring LE or xle models
My friend has a Corolla with the paddle shifters. They said that they never use them.
My camry as paddle shifters. Idk bow to use them lol
I'm sold on the exterior styling
Well I had a 2018 model for 2yrs and it cost $25600 which is a lot but they showed a camry for $28000 and nothing was power. This a tough riding car and it's tight
I just seen Raitis Rides do an Apex Corolla review, you guys should do that too! I thought this was the same but its not
I tried manual on my RAV4 Prime yesterday and it makes absolutely no sense. Impossible to tell what “gear” I’m in since there’s no RPM indication or really much engine noise. Not sure why anyone would use manual on a CVT, I’ll drive our MINI when I want to shift.
For 30K I would rather get a CPO Lexus
Henry Demented you’re the most intelligent person in the comments section.
But Lexus is uglier in my opinion. Except that cool hatch they used to make. For 30k why not get a used Avalon?
MjekuMati after work you can get a CPO Lexus GS fsport for that price.
Harold Beauchamp my wife would disagree lol
MjekuMati after work I can see why a lot of people find it ugly, I guess it’s true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder
As much as I like the styling improvements of Toyota over these last few years one thing that grinds my gears (and this is for you Roman) is that I noticed more on the Corolla and Camry is the fake dual exhaust tips they've put. If you look closely you'll see that one is the actual exhaust tip and the other is closed off inside. It's like why make it non-functional? Seems if you're (Toyota) are going to make it look and develop a dual exhaust tip, make it functional. Other than that I think it's an alright car for point a to b but I think the quality isn't the same as it was from the 90s anymore.
Wife has one of these corollas. Looks nice but stupid cheap. The cabin is LOUD and wish the touchscreen was more sensitive (even on highest setting) but drives great
I would opt for a Mazda3 for the simple fact that is uses a regular 6-speed automatic instead of a random-reliability push-belt CVT design automatic transmission. If going for manual transmission, either would be a good choice.
My mom owns a 2018 Hyundai Elantra sel and I drove it yesterday and she averages 52mpg
You know as reliable as this car will be its way too expensive for what it offers. For the same price you can Get a Jetta GLI and Kia Forte GT or even a Golf GTI. Or honda Civic Si. Toyota just sits on their reputation and prices their cars and trucks out of range for most people if you want a upper trim level.
Yeaah, if you are scared of VW reliability get a civic Si instead.
I manual shift a lot in my cvt g35. Only do it when merging or in hilly areas. I'm getting rid of it to get a 6mt corolla hatch
It'll put a smile on your face when you fill it up....especially when your daily driver had a 36 gallon tank.
it maybe boring but i love the reliability of it.ia have a 2015 no issues, thats the main reason i got one
Use it in my Forester in winter for icy conditions.
We drove Corolla 2008. It was most durable car. Still missing, soft seats, soft ride, economic drives, no expensive parts - old Toyota style.
30k ,forget it ,thats Camry territory, Honda Accord ,Sonata , Maxima territories
If only the made a proper sports version with 250hp and a manual gearbox.
Corolla gr shud b here next year. 252 hp
Why its stll just a ugly little car.
@@991carreras3 The hatch look pretty cool, just need to make it hot.
Do we get those seats in blue stitch?
Why do i manually shift my cvt simple its a 2009 nissan rogue with 56000 miles and at slow acceleration the computer does not know what ratio to use and many times it will shake the transmission. Makes me feel like its about to explode so just to prolong its life i use manual shifting at lower speeds
I would feel bad giving you guys a thumbs down but you’ve earned it. Why?? Why in the world would you review a damn Corolla. It’s not even a new model redesign. Just so you know I have never given a car video a thumps down.
The manual shifting is so you can get it in the revs to pass on the highway.
I usually use my cvt manual shifting mode for off roading, or grade decent
Civics and Mazda 3s are always that little bit more fun to drive for sure (even going back several generations). But Tommy and Roman are right, the Corolla is solid, reliable transportation. And when young people ask what to buy, I always say a Corolla.
Agreed. The jury is still out on the long term prospects of those Honda turbo engines. Will they have the 20 year lifespan we have come to expect form a Honda? The Mazda 3 now has a torsion beam rear suspension while the Corolla's is fully independent.
@@rightlanehog3151 My 2020 AWD Mazda 3 drives fantastic!!
You had a good point until you say you recommend the corolla.
Even with a manual mode it will not hold gears as the gear box computer will over ride you
You can get an LE for $10k less... You're definitely not losing $10k worth of features. Just less things to break in my opinion.
I use the paddle shifters when driving downhill
It's way faster than 13 seconds at sea lvl. With just me in my 2021 Corolla SE I can do around 8 seconds in sport mode. Hey, it's not a sport car, but it's reliable and the manual cut does serve purposes.
How are you liking your SE after all this time? Any issues? What mpg are you pulling? Thanks
@@wtfx5757 it's still a good, fun little car. 33.8 mpg right now.
@@KTown_Painter I’m thinking about a Corolla myself. Been driving my F150 as a DD for 10 years! The Corolla actually provides the most NA horsepower out of every other 2.0L engine out there! 84.5 hp per liter.
@Jay's son I just traded it for a 2020 Camry SE
Needed the larger trunk space
@@KTown_Painter oh really? How is the performance of 2.5L? Do you feel like you should have sprung for the V6?
I'm with Roman, the stuck on iPad design is a tacky afterthought.
Richard Favreau I agree, I didn’t really care for the design when I got my corolla, but now I actually like it.
Agreed!
Snarf's Sandwiches as in Snarf from The ThunderCats?
You should compare this to that $26k civic si you have. I’d like to here that.
If you don't like CVT, why did you buy the Outback, that has CVT?
HeiseiToReiwa Because they want to review Subaru’s even though they refuse to work with TFL
@@jacobyo99 IN the video, he bought the Outback for his own use, not just to review.
That never was mentioned.
And, furthermore in the video, he didn't wanted to push too hard that he might demage his brend new car.
Because people are supposed to hate CVTs for no reason these days.
