Crosswind Landings Can Be DIFFICULT| PA28

  • Crosswinds can be tricky and that proved to be the case in this flight with Juan. Just as we got over the airport fence we kept getting some gusty winds pushing us which made life difficult for Juan.
    Enjoy the flight!

    A key point you made here, and one that took me a while to sort out in my head, is to disconnect your feet from your hands. I was always dipping the wing and my body would automatically apply opposite rudder, as if my arms and legs were connected by a cable. Often this meant landing with way too much rudder correction, especially if drifting from the centreline which just exasperated it as I used even more aileron to try to get back.
    Once I'd managed to disconnect those two things, especially during the flair, my crosswind landings "clicked". Also, landing with the nose pointed down the runway is normally way more important than nailing the centreline, especially on an icy runway here in Norway.
    The other thing that "clicked" at some point, is that I was not going to smash my wingtip into the ground when applying full aileron in the flair (assuming I was at or approaching stall speed). Don't be afraid to put the controls all the way into the wind on touchdown! Don't pussy around with the controls, react to the wind all the way, with aggressive inputs if necessary.

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey mate! Thanks for becoming a Patron! It's true though and I like the way you put it. You need to disconnect your hands from your feet. There is no set amount of rudder required or aileron to combat the crosswind.

    Another great video, Lewis - maybe in your Top 10. First, Juan just gets more disgusting with each video. I don't know how much more of this I can take! Second, we know what a great teacher you are but sometimes forget you're a bad ass pilot as well. You nailed that crosswind landing - even with TR33S on the runway - and then kept going until Juan nailed his. Left the young man feeling confident in his abilities and ready for that check ride. This is textbook - pay attention CFIs!!

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't let anyone solo in more than 7 knots, but will teach up to the max crosswind component of the plane. I don't see a reason why we shouldn't be exposing students to heavy crosswinds. We shouldn't be scared of them. I deal with them every day at the airline.

    • @colinmoon4342
      @colinmoon4342 Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks Lou. The limit was 6 ikts whilst I was training and I currently set myself a limit of around 10. I was taught the crab method e.g. nose offset and straighten with rudder on landing but I feel that the “side slip’ approach might help me stay on the centre line more effectively.
      I got my licence in the UK at Solent Airfield(previously RNAS Daedalus) back in June and I found your videos extremely helpful during the training (and still do) so many thanks for that and if ever you are in this stretch of the woods, I owe you a few beers. I was 63 when I passed so I guess it’s never too late to teach an old dog new manoeuvres 😉
