Why was it okay when KONAMI did it? | OG Silent Hill 2 (2001) Combat Trailer.

  • A strange thing I noticed surrounding the recent "Combat Trailer" released for Bloober Teams Silent Hill 2 (2024) was the complaints of too much action. So I went back in time and clipped down a few separate clips KONAMI officially used for promotion of Silent Hill 2 back in 2000 / 2001 showcasing an incredible amount of combat and scenarios that mirror what we got to see recently quite closely.

    Some notable differences
1: Audience. Back In 2001 Silent Hill didn't have the following it has now. There was literally one other game.
    2. Game play was still king in 2001. You found less games hyping up story. You had to be MGS or FF. They wanted to show game play that would engage and frighten the player.
    3. The difference between being a sequel that was new vs a remake of a beloved favorite. Most people want to see how the story is being updated. Game play has never been SH's Strength. Focusing on game play was bound to disappoint long time fans.
    4. An appropriately skeptical fan base. Most Sh fans on average only like 3 or 4 games total. They're left with more disappointment than anything Most of the time. Just look at Ascension.
It really just comes down to a difference in time. A lot has changed since 2001. With both SH and gaming in general. It's a 23 year difference. Expectations are different.

Care enough to reply 🤷‍♂️. Not hard to understand that audiences are different and the same people reacting to the new trailer are older or more likely never saw the the old trailers. A 23 year difference.
      23 years
Most people reacting negatively probably haven't even the fortune of playing classic 2 and are basing their knowledge of the series on the countless lore deep dive videos on CZcams. You expect people to react the same way they would have in 2001? Like I said there were only two games. We now have 11 games counting Short Message and Ascension, most of these of middling quality. 3 more games in development. 2 movies with a third on the way. Comics, pachinko machines, a light gun shooter. The cancelation of Silent Hills and the removal of PT, not to mention tons of other games canceled over the years. Are you really surprised the reaction to a rather janky and unpolished combat reveale trailer isn't pleasing anyone? The fans are right to be skeptical

Dude, they were literally competing with Resident Evil, THE action horror title at the time.
If they wanted to even get a shred of recognition, they had to give into the action, even at the cost of misrepresenting the real thing.
The age old consensus has always been that SH is survival horror, and RE is action horror. Make of that what you will, but I think that distinction is what allowed the games to coexist. I think we're nearing another period where this discussion will be brought up, and I hope the combat trailer is merely just exaggerating in order to compete with the RE remakes.

Most likely because they focused on reinforcing atmosphere, and made 0 attempts at advertising (even in the combat trailer) that it's an action game. No QTEs, no dramatic music, just letting the soul of SH2's rock flourish through.
Game with an identity vs. modern action game trailer

    • @LoreDanka87
      @LoreDanka87 Před 5 měsíci

Funniest thing is that you can do a pop or pop-sounding, or epic music while not betraying the identity of the game. I saw FromSoftware/Bandai do it time and time again. A lot of their trailers use pop songs or something close to them, like Kindomfall, or Colors of Grey, I believe it was called (the song for DaS3 multi-player maps reveal). And each was an amazing trailer with a lot of custom camera angles as well as pure gameplay. And FromSoftware games are the closest nowadays in terms of level of atmosphere and mystic to Silent Hill despite the genre gap.
So you can do this Hollywood trailer. You just need to know how to do it, or have material for that. Something tells me there's nothing to show 4 year's after the start of the development, it's still midway beta, if not late alpha.

    • @udopadrik9971
      @udopadrik9971 Před 5 měsíci +1

The music in the trailer is actual Akira Yamaoka music. Yes, it might be cut wrong so it sounds somehow "heroic", but I doubt that is in any way indicative of how it is in the game. As the developers have said themselves, they didn't have anything to do with assembling the trailer, it was Konami.
QTEs by themselves don't mean sh*t. Combat heavy games can be scary as shown by From Software. James in the original game was actually driven to face his demons or he wouldn't have gone form his own free will into this town on a borderline suicidal quest. His resolve to confront what was in Silent Hill was part of the thing to fear in the game. He was not there entirely to avoid combat, but the combat was meant to be fisceral and disturbing, not in a way to be simply understood as enjoyable or heroic to the player. Let's face it, we don't have real basis to evaluate this based on the trailer. And no, them explaining the combat mechanics beyond small teasers would have been bad, so I wouldn't count it as a negative either that they went with teasing clips.
This was a pretty good trailer that made me more hopeful for the game, but the "fan" reaction has made me cautious that the supposed "fans" might actually drive this game to the ground with their misguided criticisms that could send Konami to panic-mode, micromanaging creative decisions to follow every whim. The "fans" could actually be the true coffin nail of this game and any possible following attempt at something in the series.

There's a world of difference between these beta trailers and the "We want RE4 remake / Homecoming audiences!" video Bloopoopers pushed out. I was actually expecting to see the pre-release trailer with some proper action, not some odd fan edit with mostly walking and standing around.
MANY things in the demake's trailers and pics understandably annoy the hell out of people. No SH fan ever asked for that crap, and contrary to the AAA shill's narrative of "nobody wants tank controls and odd camera angles lol! :^)", a fuckton of people WERE actually shocked that this cashgrab demake is again repeating that once tested, failed and hated "over-shoulder shooter" style Kocknami tried back in 2006-2012.
With QTEs and jelly screens to boot! Oh, and RTX4080 needed for 30fps at 1080p?!
The whole matter of "subtlety" does not only cover the story or themes, and how hard they're being hammered home, but also the general game-design and presentation.
There's this weirdly schizophrenic double-standard trend going on with modern big-budget games; One half is trying to push the minimalistic / no HUD for maximum immersion, while many instead seem to be pushing MORE on-screen clutter on horror games!
All this, while games like the Dark Souls and Elden Ring prove that challenging, "figure things yourself" games do still sell very well... yet modern "survival horror" games are just getting more and more handholdy and forgiving!

I think you may have misunderstood what people are complaining about. Having read some of the comments myself and agreeing with many of them, I believe the problem people have is not that there's "too much" action and more so its execution: Bloober's trailer presents the combat in a way that has more in common with games like Resident Evil than Silent Hill. People are understandably upset and worried because Silent Hill 2's combat played such a major role in its atmosphere, and the trailer suggests it's being redesigned with none of the source material in mind.

Terribly sorry that my original intent didn't come across clearly enough. Who made the trailer means very little to me because it's completely irrelevant to my original intent - and yes, I did know Konami were the ones who made it. I referred to it as "Bloober's" so that it might not be confused with the one in your video. Regardless, I'm only trying to explain that the reason people are upset isn't the quantity of combat - it's because it's been presented in a way they don't like.
Edit: that being said, I also did not write this with the intent of starting an argument - only so that some light may be shed on why this complaint is so common.

I also like how a little later in this trailer TS (?) is using an in-game camera in order to create a chilling scene. It's the one after trailer-exlusive PH×Bubblehead Nurse cinematic.
They continue doing it here in order to portray some tough situations the player might find themselves in, to create a tension with that long PH encounter when James sneaks behind him and so on.
It also has this brilliant editing with sometimes showing things, even the shots we have seen earlier in the trailer, in black and white, that message about the letter sparsed throughout the whole video. And the trailer is dynamic when it needs to be, while slowing down when something needs to be shown in greater details.
It's an amazing trailer that shows everything: the prison scene, the holes, the main big bad, the combat, the atmosphere..... Plainly said, it's a good trailer and not the poorly animated buggy mess we've been shown with Bloober and Konami.

If some fans don't know who to play modern games, that's not the problem of Konami.
And if you are one of those fans, that don't want a remake at all, get out of here, and get back to your PS2, your comment is like a fly in a restaurant, useless, and annoying.

Don't forget that some teams just have a very bad advertising company and if they had paid a little attention to details, could it have looked better? Moreover, most often many people are attracted by a negative reaction, maybe it's just beneficial for them to be discussed...even if you say that the fight here is terrible...You're discussing the game anyway... and that's profit

That's true on RE2R, the gun movements are more natural.

The remake isint a gift to fans of the original. It’s more of a way to opening new fans. Y’all gotta grow up

100% agree, at this point I wouldn't care if it got cancelled just purely because of how entitled the "fans" are.

@@Koda.R the old game cookie cut wouldn’t work in todays market. Stop being a bitch. Go play the original if that’s what you want but stop being a bitch and crying on the internet about it. Or go make your own game so that way it is in your image and up to your standards

I'm getting the impression that "fans" are one of the main problems with this series as well, at least by now. They misunderstand the original, concentrate on contradictory aspects to criticize without actually understanding what was central to the originals or what was in them, as if the supposed "fans"are there to wallow in some "we are misunderstood and forever the victims" position. At least on this specific game here it seems to me they are actively trying to sabotage it, nitpicking on things they couldn't possibly be able to evaluate based on a few seconds of video, and then just misrepresenting the original when trying to put some reason behind their distaste. They just seem to want to be angry, feel important ganging on on someone "powerful" (Konami or the developers) to feel some achievement in tearing something down. I would understand being critical, but god damn how much of this criticism seems to be misguided, uninformed and as if driven by some other motivations instead of wanting an actual good game. Konami having to panic because of poor reception of the trailers, putting pressure on and micromanaging the developers to change things before release to fit some delusional social media criticisms quite definitely wouldn't result in a good game, but that seems to be what these supposed "fans" are aiming for.

@@udopadrik9971 yea I’m just gonna wait and see what the finished product is. The blooper team already have huge shoes to fill and so far the competition has given us two nearly perfect remakes of their classics. So I’m gonna wait it out. The bloooer team seem to be fans of the original.

Yeah this is goofy af trailer, but Bloobers themselves can't just overjump their head when they don't have masterpieces, only some good, alright and meh-tier games. I hope at least game will be 5.5/10 cause it won't gonna be higher, I promise you. And I talking about score from gamers perspective who will play this, not some Metacritic snobs.

The Silent Hill fanbase is making the Fnaf fanbase less toxic somehow lol. Gameplay matters first before story.
