She's always been a solid skater since her novice years but an injury prevented her from competing at junior worlds then she returned with a stronger program the next season but was never given high PCS and ended up not making the cut for worlds while You Young and Lim Eunsoo gained momentum. Long story short, she just kept coming back and showed better consistency and I think we're starting to see the results of the hard work she put in over the years.

I think there needs to be more discussion on what a misfire Ilia’s program truly is. He’s not skating with any emotional connection to the music. It’s clear he’s too young and inexperienced to be able to interpret the emotions of a teenage drug addict with crippling depression grieving her dead father, giving up on life, and asking God to die. Euphoria also has more party music about youth and having fun that he could have chosen that would have suited him better like Kevin Aymoz did. His skating is reminding me a lot of a younger Trusova right now. I really like Ilia, but someone really needs to fix his packaging.

Yelim Kim's two programs are from David Wilson. without even check, I saw David Wilson spark in the choreo. so there you go. I think Yelim's arm and finger interpretation of music has improved that's why she is not as boring as before. The emotional reaction Johnathon has is a result of typical David Wilson choreo wizardry. Mastering quad lutz does not automatically equals bad artistry. Jason Brown have already got all the artistry score in the world, usually the highest PCS in a competition despite his all triple jump program, usually the highest GOE, still he stalks his 3A yet Ilia puts a bracket in front of his 4A. What more artistry score points can judges gift Jason Brown. Also ask Jason Brown himself, will he feel unfair if an all double jump artistic skater get higher artistry score than an all triple skaters. Jason Brown has already been gifted every opportunities there is competitively. he can further develop his artistry in ice shows. I would also argue is Jason Brown's artistry that special? Do other artistic skaters ever get the entitled artistry score as Jason Brown? TSL likes skaters with a good posture. I do too, however good posture is only a part of PCS. About Gubanova, yes her short program added car crash sound effect, however her interpretation is really appropriate (not like other similar sound effect program at all). her spins matched the car crash sound effect and her final facial acting matched the "sigh" sound effect perfectly. Great example how facial expression/acting matched the mood of music. Gubanova is an innovative artistic skater, yet not appreciated by ISU. I hope she will have many more competitions in the future.

Here is the thing about Lindsay:
She has elite dead eyes. When she was warming up, she was skating around and looking out and it hit me: she is Rebecca Bross in 2011.
Really, her movement and extension is excellent. She just needs to pick up the speed. All of her jumps were under rotated and the judges here picked them all apart. Yes, she is taller and needs time to adjust to this but I imagine Yelim had to figure this out as well?
She looked REALLY nervous when she was on the ice. USFSA needs to get behind this girl.
Also, her coach needs better foundation if she wants to fool all of us into thinking she has no bags under her eyes. Just embrace being from Russia already! I wonder if Julia and Maggie Haney hang out together. I’d like to be at that wine haul.

I agree with Dave about the Shoma versus Ilia thing, and Ilia being a big challenger. It doesn't matter that Shoma is so much better and sophisticated, and that Ilia's skating skills are what they are. Japan Open may be a not-real competition, but even so, based on the scoring alone, you can see that Ilia is being set up as the big competitor for Shoma. Shoma was asked 1 million questions about Ilia, and Ilia and Shoma basically got the same score in the free skate. This is going to be a narrative this season.

    • @fotomagrol

Maybe this is why Shoma was talking about iproving jumps , he also mentioned that id does not matter if you have the rest of components if the jumps are not the top ones, base on scores, he is not wrong , that is why he and Stephan are also focuss on the jumps and the components skills. @@fotomagrol Yeah, obviously, anything can happen, for sure, especially with this being Ilia's first full senior season and his youth and inexperience, but it was interesting seeing the narrative that was very clearly being set up. Coverage of Japan Open presented the "competition" as a head to head between Shoma and Ilia, constantly creating anticipation about their head to head throughout the event and having them skate back to back as the final two skaters to skate to build that hype, even though there were four other competitors in the men's event. This was what 2022 Japan Open was about, and it was very interesting to see the event being used to set up the Shoma versus Ilia narrative.

People like to criticize her a lot, but, to be able to cope with so much stress at the age of 15 and to deliver with such high level of performance, seriously it is re-mar-ka-ble! The time after the Olympics were not at all easy for her and she still managed to become world champion in a competitive field while Evgenias competition at her prime were a lot of skaters at the end of their careers like Mao, Carolina, Grace, Ashley...
Some skaters still try to this day to copy Alina. Her spins where beautiful and no other skater to date is able to do her final illusion combination spin so nicely as she does.
Alina is not dumb, she is just not interested in cheap drama to get attention. People in Japan just love and respect her a lot and that's also not easy to accomplish as well.

@EE DR Bring it back? The harsh truth is that child labour is fundamental to figure skating. From sexual, physical, and mental abuse, FS runs on millions of disposable young kids with Olympic dreams. I would love to see the faces of the ISU/Feds if the skaters fought back and unionized. It is high time these children are compensated for their often unpaid/underpaid labour, not just financially but mentally/physically etc. Thank you for leaving that comment bc otherwise, I would not feel the need to explain my full position.

In the USA female figure skating the door is open to who ever comes with the best program and delivers it at the main event. Mariah Bell has an oportunity, we just need from her to take it and win it.
I am loving Kaori Sakamoto programs , I think she can have an amazing years with those programs.
Shoma is on a great start and road, he is improving and bouth programs are really great for him.
And about Shoma grey costume, it was supoused to be the Purple costume, but it did not work out with it, he mentioned he did not feel free enough to do all the movements in that costume, that is why he is using the grey for competitions and the purple maybe can be used at an exhibition. I hope Mathew can modify the purple or do another costume in blue please. The grey is gorgeous but I also prefer blue.

I have a feeling this season is going to be Kaori vs Yelim vs Mai Mihara. Loena and a couple others will be in the mix too, but I just think Kaori will continue to be a dominate force, and Yelim and Mai have great programs and have looked solid over the summer/early season competitions which should give them great momentum going into the grand prix season.

I always felt like Celine matched her inner self the best. That made it my favorite program of hers. Her with Adam felt like an intriguing idea, but I felt like I was silently willing her with gritted teeth to be "That Bitch" during Britney. I often realized I was almost unconsciously, in my chair, subtly jutting out my hip and flipping my imaginary high ponytail like I was trying to force Mariah to feel Britney's spirit.

I don’t understand why Greene & Parson’s went with the White’s when they weren’t even traveling with them - even if this is a Challenger. Greg Z looked like he was passing a kidney stone in the kiss and cry area for both teams. Not a good look.
If Patrice is traveling and pretending to be present, there needs to be Tanith there to counter the politics with that disaster of a free dance.
It felt like Tim Goebel and Alyssa Czisny were paired up to do their greatest hits with this program.
Greene/Parsons are way better than this. The most disappointing thing was not the content for me oddly. It was the lack of speed first and foremost.

From Ilia Malinin to Isabeau Levito to Lindsay Thorngren and Alexandra Trusova, you seem to have hurtful and snarky comments for everyone rather than true constructive criticism. @@ShadowSparkNews about Ilia's cartwheel, I just wanna add that Ilia actually intentionally changed his chsq's elements from US classic, added the cartwheel and modified a couple of other elements to make it more exciting. it is his effort to improve his artistry, which many of Ilia's fans (who do watch his program) all detected that. Yes Ilia's cartwheel in this outing is not as stretched. However this chsq is after he landed 5 quads (which is a first for Ilia) and after another difficult choreo jump, All these are difficult to execute, (actually took much more effort than an eye-pleasing inna bauer or spiral which many artistic skaters do for chsq). However these moves fit Ilia's music choice, a 17 year old interprets euphoria. Many true figure skating fans all feel that Ilia's artistry is developing at very fast speed. Of course Dave lease will never detect all these effort and potential of Ilia's skating. Dave lease always give biased, superficial, snarky comments about skaters he does not care regardless the skaters' actually skating. Thus Dave lease's analysis about skaters' actually skating is not professional. But his gossip is sometimes well-informed due to his connection in figure skating community
