- Hi there!!
My name is Evita and I have decided that I am sick of wondering how the produce I consume was grown. I want start to paying a major role in growing a lot my own food. My hopes for the future is to have my own homestead where I can grow and store ALL of my (and my family's-not vegan) food.
I want to share my journey with everyone because I know I will make a few mistakes and some of you may be able to help me along the way. ❤
Please know that I am the only plant-based person my in family.

Just hanging in there. Gardening is a learning experience every day. You got this hang in there.😊
Thank you 💚
When starting seeds look at the type of soil that you are using. Try to use potting soil and not soil with a bunch of mulch. Just in case you do get soil with mulch you will need to sift it to remove the mulch pieces. As far as the leggy seedling use tall solo cups *dollar store) so that you bury the stems in soil. I do not have a grow light so I use a flexible desk lamp and placed it close to the plants. Always make sure you plant seeds within the season for the crop. Also your soil will get dry when planting in pots so watering is needed more.
The soil I used was Miracle-Gro indoor seed starting mix. I thought it was a good mix to you use; should I have not used that? I am going to purchase a sifter asap. Thanks for the tips 💚🌱
those pots that your spagehtti squash were in are biodegradable! you dont need to take the seedlings out of those pots, just bury them in soil and the roots will grow out of the pots and into the soil
Yeah, I knew that but didn’t know that lol. Not sure what was going through my mind 🤣. Thank you. 💚
Wow! How awesome! I just planted a few things inside
I grew up with gardens, but I am starting my own too. Much success with your first garden. It is hard work, but it is so rewarding when you start harvesting your crops.
Thank you! Best of luck to you this growing season as well!🍀🌱💚
Hey,you don't have to move the plants in the bio degrade pot's just plant them, but deep cause they are leggy. ❤❤❤
I knew that but it wasn't clicking to me at the moment lol. 💚🌱
I know you are feeling discouraged at times I just want you to know that the fact you have started is the biggest step! I’m in my 2nd year I did container growing last year this year starting elevated beds like you! You can do it don’t give up! The Lord will provide! And I think it will all turn out amazing your providing for your families future organic beautiful food just like God intended ❤🙏🏼✝️❤️
Thank you. I really need your words of encouragement today! 🥰
It looks like your plants are reaching for more light. Is your greenhouse in a sunny spot? The spaghetti squash may not be salvageable. They are too leggy. Also I would try sowing the spinach straight into your bed. They do not like their roots disturbed. Hang in there. Just count this as your year of education. Next year youll be a pro!
Yes, I put the greenhouse in the sunniest spot on my back porch; it doesn't get a lot of sun back there, but I was hoping it would be enough.
Two of my spaghetti squash died. I didn't expect them to live at all. I do plan to replant them because I have a lot of seeds. Do you know if there is any way I can prevent my plants from becoming too leggy?
I will most definitely remember that about spinach when I plant it again.
Thank you so much. I hope to become a pro... someday, probably not next year but hopefully within 10 years. lol. 💚
I have to grow mine inside under a grow light. The other alternative would be to direct sow it into your bed that gets more sunlight once your last frost date has passed.
I am going to look into getting a small grow light.
Give all your seedlings sunlight that are still in the greenhouse.
I take them out occasionally and set them in the sun for about an hour or so. 💚
Egg shells help the soil yield crops in some kinda way...I remember that from some garden video a while back...that may or may not help you...not sure with you being vegan though 🤷🏽♀️...you're doing a great job!!😃🤗
I had a cup garden as a kid...didn't have a green thumb to save my life 😂 hang in there...good idea repotting !!
Thank you. 💚 I remember having a small cup with something growing in it as well. 🌱
Make sure everything is in the sun
Right now, I do not get too much sunlight on my back porch. I hope things still grow. The have been doing, "okay" for now lol. 💚🌱
Dear, you're spending too time and money not sure what to do.
A suggestion: don't start seeds yet as a beginner gardener. Really. It takes alot of time, heat light and patience. Go to a garden center and grow 3 types of something that you want to eat that's already in 3 inch pots for your small raised bed tables - lettuces or basil, etc. Take care of those and learn what they need to grow (which fertilizer it needs, etc.) THEN next season you'll have an idea of what you can handle - what went wrong, what works.
Always ask questions at your garden center too.
I have designated this year as my learning year. I thought about just growing a couple of different types of plants but opted to do several to help me learn this year. I am just going to have fun while doing it; most hobbies/learning experiences are expensive lol. 💚🌱

Thanks for responding!
You've done a wonderful thing - making the choice of how to sustain yourself. All us gardener old heads started with nothing but a dream. Stay proactive with your budget and time. Oh...and make SURE that you write down stuff down!!...the steps of how something worked and results etc. That way, you can repeat your successes. You're going to be just fine.
😃
💚I am hoping I can eventually have some land so I can grow all of the produce I consume. I have created a gardening journal and a "don't" notebook. lol
Your plants are very leggy i dont think they will grow you need a grow light they are reaching for light
I have very limited indoor space. Is it because I am not using grow lights & only a heating mat? Or, am I starting my seeds too early?
@@ButItsVegan can you hang a grow light in your green house that may help put your 🌱 close as possible
Depending on your zone right know I'm in zone 9 time to start warm season plants cucumber, melons, peppers

I actually thought about hanging a grow light over my growing plants but wasn't sure if I should do both a heating mat and a grow light...
