  • Mayim explains the benefits and historical role of meditation with her former colleague and UCLA PHD graduate buddy Sam Harris. Sam talks about his journey discovering mindfulness through an altered state as a teenager which led him to a life dedicated to encouraging others to get in touch with their base desires through a meditative practice. How do you unlink your thoughts and uncover patterns of emotion, behavior, and beliefs that no longer serve you? How do you transcend the constructed notion of who you are to access your soul? Mayim and Jonathan get put into a meditative trance by the silky timber of Sam's voice as he tackles misperceptions about meditation and explains how to access different realms of consciousness and connect to your true self.

My favorite quote about meditation is that "You should meditate for twenty minutes every day, unless you are very busy, in which case you should meditate for an hour."

Mayim, I love what you do, and winced that you made an error. The Beatles met with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. The sitar is an Indian instrument. The Dalai Lama is Tibetan and they do not have a tradition with the sitar. It's true that he lives in India, but it's in exile in Dharamsala, near the Tibetan border. Apples and Oranges

    • @deborahrose8621
      @deborahrose8621 Před 2 lety +3

I also made a comment about this error! It was very jarring and so easy to find ~ I did not have to consult Google to know the history because I lived it
And Mayim blended the Buddhism of Tibetan knowledge and Dalai Lama and the Hinduism
Even her banter with Jonathon about ashrams was a bit cringy because of her lack of understanding and impatience to allow Jonathon to add to the conversation
I think they needed to bring on Sam much faster and let him set up definitions and impart history since he was the one who specialized with Mayim academically and also from his personal experience like Jonathon
Sam held both keys which is a real treat for the listener
BUT ~ credit to Mayim for obtaining him as a guest and bigger credit for having done Graduate School with him!!! I'm going to check out Sam Harris today and indulge in some of his podcasts

I really like what Jonathan has to say too. I think without the context of your relationship, which is one of love and respect I'm sure, it sometimes come off as if you (Mayim) are shutting him down. I love this podcast, and I am sure that this doesn't reflect the way you feel about Jonathan, but just so you know, to me as an outsider, it makes me feel uneasy or slightly upset to hear how you shut him off sometimes. This may say more about me than anything else, and you may chose to respectfully ignore this comment, which is totally fine, but I wanted to give this feedback. Otherwise I absolutely love the podcast, the conversations, the guests, and it is so insightful!

I just commented something similar and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way. I don't know about their relationship and it shouldn't matter. in a way he is the “voice of the listener” and I feel degraded by her condescending manner towards him.

Well, it’s maybe more that she has formal training in these matters, and he’s a smart amateur but not an authority. She worked and researched and studied - and taught - for years. He’s read some cool stuff and is smart. He translates Mayim into simpler terms, sometimes, and speaks more slowly and pleasingly. But she’s more deeply versed in the science and studies. Not that she’s never wrong; just that she had a deeper base of knowledge to speak from.

I have also noticed that with Jonathan and also in her interview with her mom (bit condescending at times). Also this conversation felt a bit uneasy for me since I have followed Sam's work for a while now (more the philosophy area) and it felt at times she took things too lightly and Sam is a deep deep guy, but I have attributed her behaviour to her having ADHD and having that nervous energy manifest that way. I don't think she means bad but it comes across a bit insensitive at times. And yes, I would love to see Jonathan be the subject of the interview and hear what he has to say.

About 4 years ago with all the stress of life, politics and having a disaster in the White House, I decided to give Transcendental Meditation a try and got trained over a week or so. I paid about $900.00. I have been meditating daily for 4 years and it has greatly helped get me through the last administration and helped me through the pandemic. I meditate every morning for 20 minutes or more before I have any coffee. Sometimes I do let the thoughts come and go during meditating without thinking the mantra word. I think being still and calm with or without focusing on your mantra, does your mind and body good!! The meditation I do has nothing to do with religion and that is one of the reasons I decided to sign up. I do not do any group meditating but I do it daily and glad I was trained to do it for my well being.

I'm finding this podcast nearly a year after it's been released. Starting from episode 1, on Spotify, I'm working my way to the most recent uploads. I am finding this podcast so helpful. Insightful at least, life changing if I take these uploads to the fullest. I have been struggling with PTSD after a DV situation years ago, and have been in therapy for just over a year now. Working full time and enrolled in a cohort for my bachelor's, I find it so easy to overwork myself into numbness and distraction. I am so happy to have found something that feels as if my worries are acknowledged and seen, so I don't feel so alone. Working within is so hard, but I am slowly feeling better equipped. Thank you so much

It reminds me of the barking dog and wise owl theology. As long as the crazy dog is happening in your mindset, you cannot move forward. Once you allow the wise owl to take over you can move past the issue. I always told my kids when they were freaking out over a situation: does this person feed you, does this person put clothes on your back, does this person put a roof over your head, does this person pay your bills? If the answer is no, why are you giving this person control over your life. I know that those questions aren’t always the best ones to answer as adults, but to a teenager a simplistic question and answer session can be the best to bring the wise owl back to roost, instead of the crazy barking dog.

At 06:43 Mayim stated the Beatles, George Harrison in particular, met with the Dalai Lama in India; and that was the start of the Beatles being immersed in Eastern teachings. Actually, the Beatles went to the TM (Transcendental Meditation) ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh, India (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_in_India).

But Mayim has a great show and an impressive curiousity and will improve with every episode ~

I'll add that , people with PTSD can have a hard time with meditation because it's scary in our brains when we look inside sometimes.
Make sure to honor the body and mind you have each day and do only what is comfortable and only as long as it is comfortable. 🤗

I have PTSD and I found that meditation worked for em by focusing on the physical feelings and allowing them to just be. I could never do the CBT style therapies because my trauma is now a physical sensation not a thought in my head I can logic myself out of

I love this episode, my mind and body are more split than most because of trauma and I'm slowly connecting all of me more fully. I'm a deep thinker and feel deeply so these conversations are my jam. Moving through emotions and our choice within that is interesting. I had a my 1st breakdown at 15 and was lucky to find an amazing mentor who among many lessons challenged me. I said I have no will power (I meant in terms of food but didn't say the context) she replied you have more willpower than most adults I know, you choose kindness and compassion everyday despite all the trauma and abuse you deal with. You could be angry and bitter but you choose not to be that is willpower. As I edge towards 40. I understand more fully now how right she was. That said validating and feeling negative/confronting emotions and experiences is also really important.

I really enjoy watching your episodes. They are very informative. As a nurse I hate the control politicians have of science and medicine. Science and medicine need to be left for the scientists and MD’s.
I suffered abuse as a child and never had any serious issues besides depression and anxiety. But I had my daughter late in life at 43. D/T eclampsia she came at 30wks. She almost died. She didn’t come home for 2 months. After that I developed pp depression and PTSD. I didn’t believe it, I thought ptsd was for horrible war like trauma. But I had to change hospital symptoms because the smell and atmosphere of my daughter’s was overwhelming. I’m a different person inside now. But with med management and meditation I’m doing better. Plus I have a wonderful little girl I thought I would never have.

It took me a while to watch this one because meditation is close to me. I was going to ask your opinion on TM in relation to mindfulness or loving kindness meditation and I’m glad you touched on it. I have been taught both methods. I did NOT spend a lot of money when I learned TM. I was unemployed and got a sliding scale price which I don’t know if they do anymore. That said, I do not care for The David Lynch Foundation and their tactics BUT I do still utilize TM. I find when I am exhausted and need a pick me up that TM is very beneficial in that capacity. Contrary to what you all were discussing I was taught not to PUSH thoughts away but to notice and let pass by and go back to your mantra. I believe ANY mantra will work (and it does not need to be paid for or Sanskrit). I’ve used the word “this” and it is beyond helpful for me. On the other hand mindfulness meditation has helped me carry things into the walking word that TM did not. Also when going into a social situation I find loving kindness meditation has helped with my mindset. This podcast was interesting but also ...A LOT. I am planning on going into coaching and I want to be that person who breaks down things into easy to understand concepts and I see the need it out there more than ever because meditation is a practice but definitely easier than some make it out to be. Lastly, I would listen to Jonathan’s voice over Sam’s any day of the week. #moreJC
