Sam played a major role in my de-conversion from religion, and I was then introduced to mindfulness and meditation through his books and his app. I have been practicing for about 6 months and it has been nothing short of totally liberating and life changing. @kristine sansone I'm sorry you had a bad experience with "religion". Most of the principles the guy talks about stem in most religions. The most important thing "religion" acknowledges -and meditation does not -is the fact you have to give to live. To give until it hurts sometime. That is a profound mission to undertake. Love is at the core of Religion (at least Western religions) and I'm convinced only love makes us human. With time you will understand that "emptying" yourself is not the answer. wish you luck in your journey and hope you have a wonderful day as well.

Sam is a logic juggernaut and a real treasure of our time. I'm so happy he's using his prowess to help people manage stress and improve quality of life. Time for more books and youtube channel devoted just to mindfulness/meditation practicing techniques, daily routines etc.

There is only one advice, become mindful by meditation.
I’m using sam’s app for 55 days I’ve done 25 hours of meditation, I’m so lost in thoughts, but now I can notice them for like 100 times in a day and that’s the most wonderfully thing that ever happened to me. I was feeling sadness before because some events that happened and now I might still feel it but when I’m recognizing my thoughts the mental pain is different, the life of it is shorter and that’s mindfulness.

This is legitimately one of the best (self-help) interviews of Sam Harris I've come across. I mean it's clear Sam is in a good mood here (not sure why that matters but ok) but nonetheless he really produced some super succinct explanations for how this life business actually works. This interview is packed with ideas I'd like to tattoo onto my brain.
I think it does matter, great insight.
I do not have any idea how many people Sam Harris has reached with his thoughts but I am glad that he reached me. Truly a treasure of our times. There are so few people who realize the wisdom of their thoughts and combine that with articulate the same. His meditations and podcasts are never a waste of time. Truth and ethical grounding drive his explanations of free will, the self and the nature conscienceness. I know he has diminished my suffering especially as our politically divided nation bickers.
Awareness is a better word to understand meaning with than mindfulness.
No other in my life compares to Sam.

If one is stuck in conversing just with the book (The bible), then one is not really completely understanding and doing what the book really offers and point to: doing life (conversation) straight with the Holy Spirit on a day to day second to second basis like you would do with a friend. The book is good for examples and encouragement.

I know exactly what he meant: In my teens, while I was using a psychedelic drug, I experienced this same godly love within me and for the first time in my life I felt self love. It was a game changer. Of course the downsides of these drugs are obvious, I just agree with his experience.

Thank you for not being afraid to interview controversial people. I dont agree with everything sam harris believes in (mainly I'm a Christian and he's atheist) but love listening to his ideas and thoughts.
What specifically is "controversial" about Sam Harris? Or are you referring to the fact that he identifies and articulates the absurdity of religion and religious people cant poke any logical holes in his arguement? He says that belief in religion either requires a person to be misinformed or willing to lie to themselves. I guess the religous leaders he makes look like fools in his debates consider him "controversial".

It can be considered a problem that we have too much time to think about things, because we don't have to struggle as much as people did some hundred years ago, we see the result on social media. Confusion is available.
I've learned so much from Sam over the years, and he has changed my life so much. That's why it's weird to see him showing up on one of these useless self help channels. There are probably a lot of people subscribed here who actually do need the help of this Lewis guy, who just jerks them around, but they can actually get something from this one! Watch it while you can!
I been missing Harris’s sub pod as of last months, how’s he doing w all the layers of economical international and US justifies about drump. Someones got to do it. Someone’s gotta get their hands dirty. He’s helped myself unknowingly, a true pioneer five Nobel piece prizes, FOR REALS

MDMA did no upgrade for my brain. Nor did acid. They simply gave me a fun experience. They didnt open up anything for me I didn't already have access to. I learned to meditate and found peace and calm finally around age 27. My depression and anxiety disappeared.
But I DO agree that this feeling and realization is the foundation of peace and the ability to achieve nirvana or something close to it. It was that sense of love that guided me to inner peace.
@Cori Wood Wow. Just want to confirm. I always believed meditation could help with calming one’s restlessness; creating a greater sense of ease. But you attribute the healing of your anxiety and depression to meditation? If this is so, it is very powerful and hopeful news.
I wish he elaborated HOW people are insentivized to do bad things. That would be an amazing conversation in and of itself. That should be an entire podcast if not series.

I have enjoyed meditation for decades. Without drugs, without therapy. It really helps you find your balance and finding balance helps you see things in a more realistic manner. It keeps you from making a fool of yourself and keeps you out of trouble. If you get off center you behave, like an eccentric. That may be quirky, but it's not really good for most people.
Lady Gaga, can be like that, but not really good for office workers.
So basically meditation 🧘♀️ will lower the probability that I lash out at my coworkers after 17 zoom meetings in one damn ‘new normal’ day. 😤🤯

Hi Lewis, I am enjoying all the guests you have, that speak to their different paths to success in their respective disciplines. I wonder...part of one's success also incorporates one's self-care. Is there a way one could re-frame that in a more masculine context or presentation? Or do you have guests in mind that could speak to that? For example, a grad school colleague of mine use to mention that his father would camp out in the woods of North Carolina for a month, away from his family in order to get his own self- care in but wouldn't necessarily call it that. Thoughts? Many thanks...🙏

I rolled faced when I was 18.
May i suggest "forced meditation" as a starter? Be here in the moment.
Then Wim Hof breathing excerises plus incremental cold showers. That should build a definition of what meditation feels like it.

You want to know G-d, that is the source of all desires, that is where peace lays. It is the calmness we once knew, and it is only because we knew in past, that we are now longing for that peace of mind. That calmness, where there is no fear of death. We long eternity and seek the light.

our being is centered in the brain, cause everything we do comes from mechanisms in the brain, that connect to the body.
Buddhism is a religion, too. Many buddhists say it isn't, and in my opinion it's the best religion we have. But it IS a religion. I've lived in a buddhist monastery for while, studying meditation (I'm a psychologist) and had to do things that just didn't make any sense.
A lot of it had to do with forcing myself to do things.
When I asked questions why we are doing those (like 108 bows at 4 o'clock in the morning), I didn't receive satifying answers.
Quite often Buddhism seems to me as if one has to fight with something in oneself.
Just start loving, accepting and especially trying to understand yourself - it's the greatest gift you can make as well yourself as the world around you.
Another expample is the damn pain - pain mostly is sign that something is going wrong and you stould take a look at it. In the case of sitting in meditation pain very often means that YOU SHOULD MOVE.
I'm sorry, but these religious buddhists ALL have knee problems, some have hip problems.. I wonder why??

In Indian tradition, we use another method to get rid of the ego 'I' or in simple terms to get rid of the notion from your head that you are the subject. We observe ourself from the 3rd person point of view. We imagine whatever we are feeling or hearing or in general the sense of percetions is being experienced by a different person and try to observe the sensations that person is having which is us by the way. In that way we wont get entangled in those emotions or associate those emotions with our ego. It is just a technique but meditation is the method to experience that by yourself.

the sense of self is an illusion? what does that mean?
It is my opinion that the "regular, narcissistic state" we all seem to exist in most of the time, is not actually a manifestation of being human but has been forced to be our default self because of the twisted society we have set up for ourselves- namely, capitalism. Now, obviously, capitalism has provided enormous wealth for the world, helped with world hunger, and has lifted countless millions out of poverty. But, the system we have set up particularly in the west is one that simply goes against our nature as human beings, and promotes the OPPOSITE of the state of being Sam is talking about!
Now, eventually one can learn to exist within this Western society and still hold onto a sense of calm and peace, but everyone cannot. The system won't allow it. The system demands at least some of us to live with constant lack of sleep, poor nutrition, unreasonable work hours and constant progress and endless profits coming from finite resources. One of those finite resources is A HUMAN BEING!
Our Western (and increasingly spread through the world) way of life has turned us into a society FULL of anxious, miserable narcissists. This is the exact opposite of what one requires to practice meditation, mindfulness, and especially to learn to access those states like a light switch.
I doubt a narcissist is capable of meditation, actually. I think they could pretend to. They could probably fool themselves into thinking they did, but in actuality I believe they lack the hardware for true meditation. And obviously they would be awful at practicing mindfulness. Anyone disagree?
