Honey, the Sims franchise has always been a cash grab. You should have budgeted for expansion packs before you decided to buy the first game. Yes, it's going on $1k USD now, but it's also been out eight years and has twice the packs that the other franchises had because of that. And inflation is a thing. I'm not a shill for ea, either, I actually got booted off the board for not kissing the toxic guru nether regions when it was under the previous management. I stopped going into sims forums after that time I pointed out "Hey, I think it's really cool that they're fleshing out the occult stuff more, but the cost-benefit ratio seems a tad unfair." This was back around when they released Vampires, I think? I loved the ideas they had with the system of perks and such. HOWEVER, I immediately became concerned that a single occult was occupying a single $20 game pack. Just looking back at the Sims 3, this would likely mean a separate pack for witches, werewolves, and fairies too... That means $80 for what was originally a $40 expansion... and what about the other features that often came with occult life? The mystic items, the various entities like genies... Bonehilda?! I was worried about which packs would get these items, and my question was later answered when the Paranormal Stuff pack released separately... Were they going to dabble with any other occult life states as singular packs too? And then there was the worrying trend of them splitting content that was originally used for expansions, like laundry, butlers, and such, among stuff packs...
Now, this is the part I really got dogpiled for. I really dislike them putting gameplay mechanics that were previously parts of full expansions into stuff packs. In the days of Sims 2 and Sims 3, I never felt like I *needed* a stuff pack in order to complete my experience of the game. In fact, aside from one in the Sims 2 my friend gave me as a gift, I never played any other stuff pack. My understanding was always that they supplemented gameplay mechanics already present in the game, and enhanced the experience. My experience was fantastic enough for me without them, so I instead saved my money for buying expansions. Now, laundry is a separate stuff pack, instead of being included with an expansion like it was in the Sims 3... Which pack had butlers, again? Glamour Stuff, right? Whatever. The point is, even if I *could* afford to spend all of this money on every pack to have everything I had in the Sims 3, plus the fleshed out extensions that the Sims 4 tries to provide, one can't help but feel like this method of piecemeal content is deliberately being done to lead enthusiastic simmers to spend more, regardless of if we're actually getting back what we're putting in... Because then, some of the game packs that were supposed to be fleshing out these features, didn't feel all that sufficiently improved from their Sims 3 counterparts, or even from previous game packs. *:glares at Jungle Adventure Pack:* Like... There were more things to _look_ at, but gameplay-wise... it didn't feel very different, not enough to warrant it being a standalone pack instead of part of a full expansion, at least...
I went into a forum asking what people thought would be a good solution for this? Something where we could get the fleshed out content without paying *_double_* what we paid for a previous expansion of the same concepts, BUT still give the developers the money we think they deserve for creating a more fleshed out experience...
Then I just got dogpiled for "just wanting free content" or "being too much of a cheapskate to just buy the content I wanted." or "being stuck in the past." and I got a LOT of comments of "No one's forcing you to buy anything!" and "Just go play your precious Sims 3 and leave us alone." ... So I did... I still play sims 4 from time to time, and buy the packs that interest me, but just enjoy Sims 3 more, and stopped going into sims forums altogether.

@@Mai57 They do make the base game bland on purpose so people will just pile their money into the game so it's even slightly enjoyable to play. I do think a lot of DLC should be base game (things like laundry, pets, teen years, and basically the dlc that has purely decor items, probably more I'm not thinking of right now) and what dlc is left shouldn't be so over priced. They're a huge company with lots of people buying their products so much they don't need to make it so expensive. I do understand the whole "You can price it however you like" but it can only go so far before it's a scam. Sims 4 has never had any competition, so they're able to price crappy items for expensive and get away with it. It's especially hard because of the hardcore fans who will defend their every move like their lives depend on it.

As salty as this cake is, EA is the only cake baker in town. There are no other generational life simulation games. There is NOTHING comparable to the sims. No other game has this many expansion packs or such a large modding community and enormous fanbase. Even if there was, it wouldn't be as nostalgic, lore heavy or rich in content like a franchise that's made by a billion dollar company over the span of two decades and dozens of expansions. @@Shirruri As much as I’m looking forward to Paralives, it’s most definitely not suitable competition for the Sims. It should be treated as it’s own game, and unlike the many many times it’s brought up, should stop being compared to a game decades in the making with a fan base built from that. To parrot the original comment; there isn’t a franchise as lore heavy, as ‘nostalgic’, or as rich in content as the Sims, and even IF Paralives could reach that with a small team (and that is a big if) it would need years-not just to finish the base game, but for lore and other additional content to be as robust, and I genuinely do not know how long that would take.
Hype is very good for indie games, but this amount of “Paralives will fix the Sims!! Watch it be the best life sim out there!” (not from you, obviously, but this comment section and pretty much every single video being critical of the Sims) is giving very much ‘Cyberpunk 2077’. I’ve said this for years: the sims team uses the guru name to minimize criticism and appear more “personal” to the community. The gurus are producers, devs, etc etc. Decision making people, they like to separate EA from them but that’s not the case at all, they are part of EA. Clever marketing trick if you ask me, it has worked charms. They get away with releasing badly made content and get almost no backlash for selling a broken game cause “poor gurus, they are EA slaves”. When in fact, they are not. They get paid, quite a lot, to make this game. How can modders, that do this in their free time and also have jobs, can do a better job at fixing and adding stuff to the game, but the professional game developers that get paid to do it can’t? Just doesn’t make sense. They are doing the same thing they did to The Sims 3. Leave it an unbridled mess of a game to force people on to the new one, we already know the sims 5 is on its way.

@@charlottemarker4763 not quite accurate. The Sims team is part of EA. It’s not a separate thing. Lindsay Pearson is a senior producer at EA. And she manages the sims. She made it very clear that she and other producers are responsible for choosing the pack themes. She literally said she was the one that decided Journey To Batuu was gonna be made. They decided to call themselves The Sims Team and use “guru” instead of just their real job description to get people to think like this, that EA is a separate thing when it’s not. They are part of EA, they work for EA at EA, get paid by EA. If you take a look at the game credits you can clearly see a marketing team specifically for the game, so that’s part of “the sims team” too and not a completely separate thing from the other “gurus”.

The situation is not actually surprising at all. Let me explain:
Every successful video game development company has a dilemma: "Do we prioritize existing players or future players"? The answer is always obvious - prioritise future ones, those who haven't bought the game yet, because they bring in money, and release expansions, so that existing players spend more money on your game. This means "More Content". always wins The more content, the more bugs. Fixing those bugs is not a priority for anyone, unfortunately. But the Sims franchise has three additional problems:
The first problem is that it cannot decide on its "tone". Is it a reasonably realistic life simulator? Is it a sci-fi title, as aliens, robots and plant people would suggest? Is it a fantasy title, with ghosts, vampires and magic? The majority of players, Including those who enjoy sci-fi/fantasy elements, think it is a life simulator. Which means packs that add "realism" - weddings, jobs, more gameplay for the child life stages, etc - are going to outsell the other ones Regardless of how buggy they are at launch.
The second problem is that script-altering mods have been allowed in this, and the two previous generations of the Sims. Why should developers bother fixing problems, when modders can do it quicker, right?
The final problem is lack of competition. It leads to a situation where fans of the genre, despite problems and complaints are Still going to buy enough DLCs to make money for EA. The only solution is a large-scale boycott, which is impossible, due to the playerbase being too big, too global and too concentrated on the only title of its genre.

@@lehedonist Cost and difficulty. A game like the sims isn’t easy to make, especially if you are going all in on full 3d open world like many would want. Build tools, character creation, an insane number of assets for both of those, animation work, AI, mechanics, and much more and now try to squeeze all that into performing well on a wide range of lower end machines since the Sims audience isn’t necessarily the high end gaming PC type in a lot of cases. Top that off with the fact that even if they do make the game theres no guarantee that they’ll make their money back or get a significant portion of the audience to click with it and it ends up being a very risky game to try and develop.

I do feel bad that many of you can't enjoy the game much anymore between broken packs and broken base game updates, but you have to learn how to call it quits sometimes. Oh my friend, but did you hear the latest news that came out 2 days ago? The reason why EA has given up on The Sims 4 seems obvious now. EA is in talks with Amazon, for Amazon to purchase EA. Because Amazon has stated that they want to purchase EA to be able to make video game series & movies like The Witcher for their streaming service. I don't know if EA has been shopping around for a buyer or if these talks began some time ago, but if this wasn't the reason for giving up on Sims 4 this might be a reason now. And I hope against all hope that the evil Amazon doesn't buy EA.

Thanks for considering me, a console player. I used to play on PC and when i made the switch to console it wasnt too bad and im doing surprisingly well with no mods BUT ever since they added wants and fears… it ruined my game and i found out you cant cheat the fears away unless you have a mod. I have a household of three sims right now and all three of them are afraid of a dead end job and having unfulfilled dreams and they are always either sad or angry because of it. It ruins any realism that i couldve had in my game, especially because one of my sims that hates their job is literally doing their dream job!! The sims 4 wanted to give us so much control over our sims to the point where they have no personality but then they give us something stupid like fears which completely erases the creativity aspect of the game just because it is SO persistent in every household i have. There are basically three fears, fear of death, fear of unfulfilled dreams, and fear of dead end job and its so unrealistic that every sim i have would be scared of one of those things. One time i had a sim who was afraid of being cheated on and that one is actually pretty cool and realistic but besides that fears have ruined my game and i guess I’ll just turn wants and fears off but i hate that because i still do want wants, the fears are just interfering with my game too much

Despite making a lot of profit from the franchise and even more from other titles, EA still outsourced their QA Testers that are (presumably) not familiar with Sims 4 (I don't blame the foreign QA testers, I'm sure they're doing their best, but nothing beats in-house testers, they have access to full code and and can communicate with the rest of the team faster due to having a physical presence) and they hired only a handful of them when they usually hired dozens if not hundreds. The thing about the game is that DLCs are interconnected to some extent, and one bug will tangle up the whole game once loaded, and they aren't prioritizing in fixing the old bugs. I'm pretty EA can easily afford an army of best programmers around the world, after all, we see that many modders can make content and fix game on their own without a financial incentive, but instead, they overworked their employees and still keeps on looking for a way to layoff more despite turning a profit.

Plus, these Sims Gurus paid from EA to make the game. Some of these Gurus have high ranking creative control and development decision making over how this game is made, marketed and released. So to solely blame it on EA and absolve the Gurus/Sims team is ridiculous.
Consumers are also to blame for continuing to support a game or franchise knowing it creates, develops and releases broken, buggy content. If consumers keep paying and making excuses for crappy games, that's what exactly what they'll get.

Yes, the sims team did say The Sims 4 has “years ahead” but if they didn’t say that, everyone would know The Sims 5 is imminent and would’ve stop buying The Sims 4 new content which is bad for business. So in turn they make us believe The Sims 4 has many years ahead so that we continue to buy while waiting for the illusive Sims 5. The reason why they aren’t giving us the big things we want; babies, cars, open world. Because they are putting the good stuff we want into The Sims 5. I still haven't bought the HS pack because it's still broken, even though I like the BB/CAS. We haven't even heard anything more about it. They act like if they just don't talk about it then it will go away and people will forget about it until it's time for them to release another pack. When it's time for a new pack they'll move on and hype that one, everyone will get excited and then the excitement turns to disappointment when we realize how lack luster it is. It really is ridiculous how many bugs are in just my game alone. I've gone back recently to play with university, I keep having this bug where my Sims come home early from soccer and then I get a message that she's not doing well and needs to step it up. My toddler interactions are bugged and I can't read them to bed anymore, their walk style is completely broken, my adult Sims pick the toddler up from half way across the room and then reset. I'm having issues with seasons, nobody wears the right clothes in winter, my ask for presents from father winter is gone. My adult Sims constantly stop what they're doing to go play with the freaking dollhouse...by themselves. I could literally go on and on. I honestly find new bugs every single day. I don't think any of them will ever be addressed. We as consumers need to stop buying these packs, even though we're desperate for gameplay, until they fix the game. I’ve played the franchise since I was really little with the sims 2 and I’ve played it now for almost 2 decades (2024 here we come!) but the Sims 4 is by far the saddest I’ve ever been when it comes to this game. I started out on console and got a ton of the packs, but to no avail I haven’t had much fun besides building with all the stuff I have now. But nowadays I have a computer and I’ve been having to re-buy the packs again. I’ve had to take a step back and really decide what packs I really needed to expand my game for the better because I’m a college student with bills. The only 2022 pack I own for PC is Werewolves and it’s the funnest I’ve had with TS4 in years. I love the werewolf system and just in general have a sweet spot for occults especially werewolves and aliens. This aside, I own MWS for console and had no fun with it, it glitched out my main family and my PS4 crashed while trying to manage a wedding. I know I rambled a bit, but it’s just because I’ve put so much into this game and I haven’t had as much fun as the past two games. My last point is refreshes, Spa Day instantly became an instant fav of mine after the refresh and I really hope Get to Work, Outdoor Retreat, and Luxury Party stuff get some love soon because they could really benefit from a refresh.

I do really appreciate your blunt commentary 💜 Even when I haven't always agreed fully, it's way more helpful than not, and has helped me since I've picked up the game again after years. I haven't bought more recent expansions except cottage living (I am a sucker for adding more animals, I realize this 🤷‍♀️), and I feel at least a sliver better about my spending choices towards it.
Thank you for being you, boo 💜 sorry I was one of the lurkers for a bit, but I'm finally subscribing now, and I'm interested in seeing future opinions 💕

I’m only building and yesterday I noticed that the game keeps saying I’m playing a household i haven’t played with. My building process seems to be saving… but I’m worried it won’t.

I will be real, if ot wasn't for the mod community (and piracy, I guess), I doubt TS4 would have as large of a playerbase as it has now. They carry the game in their backs

My sims 4 game doesn't even work anymore, its so buggy and I can't even control my sims anymore. it feels like ive tried almost everything to fix it, but its still completely unplayable, I mean I can still build (which I do enjoy) but in terms of the actual gameplay, I can't really even play the game so sometimes it feels pointless.

What’s even worse is that they don’t even care about us console players one bit. We don’t have any mods or cc. We should atleast get a full time discount on the overpriced packs but i prefer mods and cc. It is so boring using the same items even though I have some packs

I read that Amazon is allegedly trying to buy EA. Does anyone know more about that? I read it yesterday and the first thing that came to my mind was that the condition of the packs might be directly related to an upcoming sale/ takeover. I wonder if the current situation was deliberately brought about because certain parties to the deal could expect certain benefits from a situation like this. I would be interested to know if some of y'all have heard anything about it and how you assess the situation. And Satch, thanks for your content. What I like the most about it is your criticism of capitalism and the way you speak openly about everything.

Wouldn't be surprised if they sell. I prefer Amazon to get it but I think Disney may get it in the end because they're looking to expand more in the gaming industry and they would give a better offer than Amazon would.

Unfortunately, werewolves still has awful glitches and gurus just tell us to "remove the pack then start it up then put it back." Like how a cured sim still displays wolf symptoms constantly. Plus there are two sets of the wolves for some reason and it really messes with the neighborhood stories. Oh and whatever glitch is going on with it that caused duplicate worlds. And they just tell us to remove it. Like no. Fix the game!

apparently the marketing people at EA love when we complain because it means people talk about the game. It's a mentality of "love us or hate us at least you talk about us" which is doable but it has absolutely no legacy. Theyre shooting themselves in the foot

I really had hope after werewolves came out. it was such a solid pack and for ea's money grabbyness, came with a lot of features. didn't take long for them to shatter our hopes 🤣

If one said this a few years ago, they would have been frowned upon and called a Karen, because people still had hope for this game to become better.
This is no longer the case.

I wonder what they are doing sometimes. Are they just goofing off or what? I mean, how long does it take simply to re-address some of the townies to make them look more like the previous Sims games. That should be an easy box to tick. If they can't even be bothered to do that it doesn't set up much potential that they might get around to anything else with any energy unless they are charging you for it.

I got the wedding pack, and when I saw how buggy it was I was like ''Ok I have only had it for a few hours lets refund it!''. But no, there is nothing saying no refunds while buying it, but there still are no refunds. Luckily it didn't mess up too much for me, since normally I just do the eloping at home and stuff, but honestly I wish I hadn't gotten it. And then there is the werewolf pack, I love this pack and I love the customization and the new town, but you can only change into a wolf on the full moon. I was expecting to be able to change into wolf on command, like the spellcasters and how they can just summon a familiar, but no... It doesn't let you do it like that, and it really just makes you feel like a normal human while playing.

My game has been almost completely unplayable since high school came out. I was excited for more interactive teens, but half the time my game refuses to save. Even when it looks like it saved successfully and I don't get an error message, if I travel with my sim and then go back home, it'll be back to the previous sim day and I've lost all of my progress. I've repaired the game, uninstalled and reinstalled it, even stopped using cc entirely, and nothing works. I'm just not going to play for now.
