  • Hello Everyone! Thanks for visiting the channel once again. In this video I am SRT climbing with the Akimbo. I bring to you some tips and tricks that I have gathered through 12 years of climbing experience and the two years that I have owned the Captain Hook. The Captain Hook is absolutely a gem an extra piece of equipment that cannot stay in the bag! For Most, not all, of my climbs I bring it with me. It does not matter if the Captain stays racked the important thing is that it always provides you an option. Whether you're in a grip or just trying to improve your position in the tree I have been able to rely on this tool time and time again. It might be extra weight on your saddle but you can always change the equipment that's on your person. Another draw back is the extra long tail that trails behind you in the tree. However, all you need to do is stuff that portion into an accessory bag and viola! Problem solved. Lastly, this tool is not perfect but is certainly not something to look past. Good luck to you all this season!!
    Make sure you watch this video and click through my playlists. Ask questions about the equipment I've used. Suggest equipment that you want reviewed and I will do my best to bring a thoughtful video to help you make the best decision. Drop a Comment let me know what you think. Give me some feedback. Tell me what you would do different. These comments are so important because they help others who are surfing the internet gain priceless knowledge. All the information whether spoken or demonstrated is a free resource for you. Make sure you like and subscribe. It helps me continue bringing content to you and will also give me an edge when inquiring with manufacturers for equipment to be used as review material and so on. YOUR FEEDBACK IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME AND I WILL RESPOND WITH A LIKE/COMMENT OR BOTH. Please leave thoughtful comments because I love learning from you.
    Disclaimer: I have over a decade of experience in Tree Climbing. Please remember that the activities here are related to either Sports/Recreational/Professional/Production Tree Climbing which are inherently dangerous in nature. Please seek the proper training from an experienced climber before attempting these stunts or climbs by yourself. Great video mate. I find it useful when you talk about the examples in situe. Also nice and steady. a Lot of climbing videos are so rushed, It's almost nervous.
    I've been thinking of a minimal solution with the hook. Using a Zillion on 30ft line and interchanging a Eashok with the Captian hook when I need it. This would let me use it as a regular lanyard and then adapt to the hook with the zillion quite quickly.

    • @chtclimbing
      @chtclimbing  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment Brian. The zillion is a great tool and will allow you to capture your progress much easier than with a split tail and pulley. Also, that's a great way to save space and weight on your climbs by having one system that can be easily interchanged. I will give this a try and see how it works out for me. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your method and I wish you well, climb safe!

    Well done! In climbing/rigging you’re only limited by ur imagination and it helps by watching and learning from others the things that they have figured out.

      Totally. I don’t do much climbing but I totally froze last week (I haven’t climbed in a couple months) because I didn’t have anything for work positioning (just a fall arrest system) and i got lost in the air trying to navigate my 3 points of contact in a way to still be able to receive weight being hoisted to me. Have another job next week which will probably be similar to the last and now have a work positioning lanyard getting expedited to hopefully not freeze for a second time 😳

    Your simplicity, strait forward approach is great. Far better than most, especially the real world falls and loss of balance situations. Showing how equipment works is one thing, but the application without the hindrance of dealing with tools is a big plus in first learning how to maneuver a loft. Keep up the good work!

    The setup I am building has the Captain Hook with a DMM revolver rig twin and revolver rig single with a prusik and rollnlock on a prusik for a progress capture 3:1 system that you can add to the Captain Hook, you would need to basically have a long lanyard to use for the 3:1 and pull yourself across the canopy, to another tree or to position to and from a rope walk

    The hook is not for life support. If you're working off of it you need to have your lanyard on as well as your main tie in. Also goes for advancing your system, you should never be only supported by the hook. It's only a secondary means to access other areas. No offense to you, I'm only saying all this because newcomers looking to use the hook need to know these things as it is standard safety protocol for our industry. Stay safe 🤙

    Whats your opinion on the difference between the Akimbo , and roperunner pro ? I'm looking for something that will be able to pull double duty. An ascender/decender that will work for recreational climbing , and hunting.

    • @chtclimbing
      @chtclimbing  Před 3 lety +1

      Are you an experienced climber? If not I would just stick to the rope wrench for both. If you are experienced then your best bet is either one of them. The only issue with the akimbo is that it can’t be used on the same friction setting from one day to the next. If it rains you also might not be able to use it. The rope runner pro is fantastic and would only say that avoiding a free fall scenario is about your only concern. I like them both it’s just that the akimbo is subject to the elements on a different level than any other device. Temperamental or not it’s still a great tool.

    • @justinliedtke5570
      @justinliedtke5570 Před 3 lety

      @@chtclimbing I'm not an experienced climber. I've also been looking at the rope wrench with the Fusion tether. It would be for mainly SRT climbing for hunting , and transitioning to DRT while playing in the huge willow tree out back.

      @seanmccool1041 Před 3 lety +2

      I feel like my akimbo works better for drt but it is sometimes tempermental about rain and sap. But my rope runner is always my go to for srt. It is hands down way smoother with basically no sit back. Both are great though

      I just bought a grappling hook off Amazon, your able to fold out the grapples and lock them in place by twisting it(threading the top tight to grapples), so I, when needed only fold out one, and I’m able to twist it like the hook, though this I know, once it’s hooked and it won’t come unhooked I’m committed to going out and retrieving it(with all three grapples folded out), but that’s ok cause I’m going out to do work any way, then when I’m done come back to tree on mrs system.
