Vox just increased the number of bottles in the ocean by 3%
more than that
glass bottles are not a big pollutant (no harmful chemicals, and animals don't eat them), the problem is plastic bottles
M Rawash yeah, but if they wash up on a beach and break they can still seriously hurt someone
M Rawash oh ok lets all go a throw more bottles in the sea then
Vince Hutch but that takes a lot of time
Me: * Sent message in a bottle to the ocean *
Future kid in 2029 : * found the bottle and read the message *
Message: "send nudes"
You will be a dirty old man by then ;)

I've been dumping refrigerators into the ocean for years and no one has written back to me yet.
I tried to sent you over 5 Super Capacity 4-Door Refrigerators w/CustomChill® Drawers, maybe we're using the wrong current. It cost me over $15,000.
Bodies for me
You cant trust the damn currents these days!
HAHAHHA
Che8t xDDD
Let's not encourage people to throw trash into the water.
It's not trash, it's treasure
Noah Talbott ... it's trash
.......... its treasure
it's trash
IT's Trashsure!
Must be some really expired wedding cake 🤢🤢
@TheOtherWhiteBread0 Ikr! The most important aspect but it wasn't explained.
i was thinking the same thing..
I found an emergency water sack thingy once which was weird, and the front end of a car.
Oh and my own flip-flops 10 km down the coast which I was pretty happy about
Late reply, I'm aware- but how did you recognize the flip flop as yours?
this man found 83 messages in a bottle and you cannot text back
Finds a bottle on the beach,
opens the note and reads it.
"FIRST!!"
Finds a second bottle.
"PLEASE LIKE MY BOTTLE COMMENT!"
Pikapetey Animations
hi weird animator who watches everything I watch...
are you stalking me?
Pikapetey Animations Hey there Petey. =)
Pikapetey Animations u got so many subs lol
whoa it's Pika
You are my favorite commenter, I hope I find a bottle comment from you someday.
Can you please put in a link to that simulator? I want to see what would happen if I dropped a message in a bottle where I live.
Here's the simulator we used in the video:
las.pfeg.noaa.gov/oscurs/
It's actually pretty fun to play with. You'll notice that tweaking just a few variables can give you different results. There are a ton of other neat things we didn't put in the video, so here are a few.
This simulator's fun, since it simulates where plastic might end up (and, by extension, bottles): www.adrift.org.au/
And here's a site that shows a ton of global tracking buoys:
www.aoml.noaa.gov/phod/dac/index.php
Finally, here's a beautiful, slightly trippy visualization of the ocean's surface currents: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=3827

Thanks vox.
Vox thanks Phil!
WHY DOES THIS ONLY WORK IN THE PACIFIC
excuse my all-caps but i am genuinely frustrated the US government would release a model that only works for 1/3 of US coasts
Because they haven't done the simulation for the other coasts yet
"How this guy found 83 messages in bottles" arts and crafts class.. 😂😂
Clint seem's like a pretty cool guy
incorrect. he thinks that bottles with paper in them arent trash
pymai "one mans trash is another mans treasure"
sosig
Anthony H trashure
@@Anthony.462 You beat me to it?
Missed opportunity to have "Message in a Bottle- Police" as backing track
Adept watch to the end ;)
except they had that song for the last 10 seconds....
Oh yeah just let me throw my refrigerator in the ocean
Texting is overrated... messages in bottles is the future! ;)

If you like Wall-E and hate the animals of the ocean, the answer is yes.
lol
So that's where my refrigerators end up
I sent a message in a bottle when I was 7. I wonder where it is now
Clint found it
Puts a message in a bottle.
Bottle hits the great pacific garbage patch .
Imagine finding your own bottle you threw in the ocean years ago...
after years.... and then just shrug and trow it back
fun fact Turks and Caicos Islands are called turks beceouse the cactuses in that island have flowers on top of them that looks like a fes. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a0/Flag_of_the_Turks_and_Caicos_Islands.svg
ok.
gökçe arslan asked no one
Thanks
Tommy Cooper plants amazing
gökçe arslan But the fes is moroccan look it up
His hobby is sorting through trash on the beach to find paper notes in glass?
My hobby is drinking and watching CZcams videos so good on him.
Who else thought that the video ended at 1:11
I was expecting to hear interesting anecdotes about the messages he found, but instead I got a video about ocean currents.
Great.
"a hundred million bottle, washed up on the shore..."
It’s not trash it’s treasure! If anything it encourages people to pick up bottles and clean out oceans. 😀
Thanks for sharing my story, Vox! More real-life message in a bottle stories on my blog: www.messageinabottlehunter.com Cheers! :-)
Message in a Bottle Hunter Nice try
Message in a Bottle Hunter Such a fun blog, I highly recommend! The cute cartoons are the best part : )
Travis M. He's legit
Message in a Bottle Hunter all that is left to ask is, did you eat the cake?
Marc Warnecke I did not eat it! All that was left after 8 years at sea was some yellow-ish smudging and a few black specks...
So how did he actually find them??
He killed the people who found them. Obviously.
Did you watch the video?
+Man Maker +Mi is right. Didn't you see his eyes at 5:52?
"Every other kind of clothing...shirts, sock, refrigerators". my teachers never told me people in other countries wore household appliances
I find a couple every year and that's without looking for them. I sometimes respond if there is contact information and they have written something interesting or funny.
Would you respond to this comment if there was something interesting or funny here?
How old are they generally?
i had message in a bottle stuck in my head during the entire vid so when they played it at the end it was really satisfying
Same here!
Littering is littering!
So... you really shouldn't throw trash in the ocean...
plot twist: he stole his wife
If I sent a bottle I'd rather a random person find it not someone who looks for them.
I hope people think about the impact throwing bottles into the ocean will/can have marine life before chucking them in.
I found a message on the Missouri river that read "1932, you don't know my struggle, you don't know my pain. all that matters in the end is that you just lost the game."
This is so awesome. One day I will do this, both write and send of a message and look for some. ^ ^
4:25 that's an amazing database.
brought such a huge smile to my face when he said " its your" to the question, "do you have a favorite letter?"
as soon as i read the title, i started singing "message in a bottle" by the police...
mohammedzoh3 oh yeah i love NYPD songs
That bottle hunter guy is so happy that it makes me happy.
I love this ! Great job Clint ❤
I'm gonna send out like 1000 bottles plugging my instagram now
That's cost roughly $5k in bottles, which would be better spent on AdSense
5k in bottles *and* wine
Getting smashed is an added benefit.
But it's cheap wine that tastes like dog urin- wait, oh...
Sir Francis Watcha tryna say fam?
@AstronomyToday that's not what her videos sound like lol
sooooooo... littering up the ocean is a cool and quirky thing now, ain't it?
master asdf its been that way
It's also encouraged to clean up said bottles and read what's in them.
No sense of scale. No sense of scale at all.
It’s not littering if it’s meant to be picked up
Bence Joó Democrat
If this guy loves bottles so much, maybe he should marry one. (GOT 'EM 💯 👌)
Wigs overwatch reference?
Wigs dafuq??
Wigs DAMN BURNED HIS ASS
Jesus Christ man how toxic
He loves 🅱 *ottles*, so he should probably 🅱 *arry* them
the way it says "this bottle's journey wasn't entirely random, there was som science involved," kinda intrigue me to know more.
I want to start making random Vox like vids. "the man who has tried over 100 different chapsticks"
lol
I'd be interested to know how Clint became so interested in this hobby, like how did it all start? Did he just come across a message in a bottle one day and thought it was so cool that he wanted to take it to the next level?
Clint found my father’s bottle in Turks and Caicos 50 after he threw it in - Clint’s passion comes from a child’s desire for a pen pal which grew into a desire to meet everyone on earth !!!
God our beaches are so dirty :(
That’s really cool! It’s nice to see someone I went to high school with do something like this!
Damn this channel is great
I once found a message tied to a balloon once. There was a phone number on it and I found out that it was sent by a guy from Great Falls, Montana several months earlier and it traveled roughly 1,500 miles before it landed near my home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I found a bottle with a message and opened it read it and it said “I farted in this bottle lol”
This years January the worlds oldest message in a bottle. It is 150 years old and is from the German institution for ocean measurement of that time. Really fascinating
Positivity in a bottle, wonderful concept.
I threw one off the coast of Florida once when I was about eight years old (17 years ago). It said "Save the World". I wonder if anybody found it.
Clint Buffington seems like the nicest person on planet earth.
"Bottle" sounds weird now
It's such a small beautiful world full of loveliness
Wine bottle is the best bottle for messages? Is that because it is genuinely better or because so many use them that more get found purely due to the greater numbers?
stop polluting the ocean
Just wondering : Where do you get your music from? These are nice background scores and since I will have to do a video on my own due to the school curriculum soon I'd love to know where to get this type of music from. Keep up the great work :)
Legend has it that is comes from deep within the belly of great beast who's dwellings are said to be located in a very ancient valley very far from here. The journey there is very treacherous so you will need this. *hands you an old bottle with a soggy map inside it* Go now, and search for what it is that you seek. Good luck.
Putting a piece of paper in a bottle and throwing it into the ocean is the same as throwing any other piece of litter into the ocean. DO NOT LITTER!
Love this story !
I used to write little notes to my boyfriend every month we were together and stuff them into a bottle, I planned on giving it to him on our second anniversary. We broke up right before our second but that decorative wine bottle was too cute to break so I had stuffed in a drawer where no one would see till I figured out how to remove the notes.
One day I left my friend in my room and she was going through my things. I came back into my room and found she some removed a note throw the very thin stem of the bottle and was reading it. I was amazed she got it out in a matter of minutes, by using a knitting needle. She was reading the notes and laughing her head off and I was astonished at how creative a nosey person could get. We saved the bottle and had a good laugh.
Kat Khan thank god the bottle is safe
ha! I grew up a few miles from the sanderling resort.. my dad was an architect on the outer banks, mostly north of the Sanderling (Town of Duck) in Corolla. small world
Studying water currents with bottles is a lot like studying air currents using weather balloons.
6:00 “there’s no algorithm”
So we’re not living in a simulation
Perhaps it might be said the seas are the planet's algorithm, with the likes of Greenpeace & other monitoring organisations, that we learn more about the change in weather systems & seasonal climate, this in turn can assists wildlife in crisis & our own future wellbeing.
"Found a bunch of blackberry phones..." Yeah. That makes sense.
Clint Buffington seems like a really nice guy.
My grandparents met through message in a bottle. They had a miserable marriage.
litter with a message.. -_-
I live in the turks and Caicos on Provo this is amazing
FedEx and UPS: wait that's illegal.
Amazing!
Don't title the video "how this guy found 83 messages in bottles" if you're not going to explain how he found 83 messages in bottles. Because obviously?
this video tells us about his tips and tricks on finding bottles, which means that the "how" in the video is valid
Imma put a meme in a bottle and toss it in the ocean
Nice job writing this.
I think we all need the information on that intro music, for science and not at all because it is godamn beautiful.
This is just amazing
I've been on several cruise ships in my life, and every night i throw a message in a bottle overboard.
I've actually had three returned.
I always do the same thing...
* use a glass bottle (plastic is subject to UV).
* write the message in pencil (doesn't fade, run or smear.
* wrap a $1 bill around the note. Tightly.
* wrap the entire "message/money" cylinder tightly with dental floss), then colored yarn on the outside of the note. That way someone looking at a foggy, barnacle covered bottle can see that there's something inside.
* use a screw top metal cap. If using cork, melt wax over the top (keeps the integrity of the cork).
I always leave my name, physical address and email address.
Just guessing, i bet I've thrown 100 bottles this way.
I've had 3 returned.
I was SHOCKED the first time it happened (Baja Mexico to Colombia).
Now, I'm just hopeful.
One of my teachers in high school was part of this project that put snapple bottles in the ocean w/ messages in them to study currents. He was obsessive about collecting snapple bottles for it.
such beautiful ppl
i literally watched this when it was uploaded and 2 years later youtube was like "how bout this?"
Wow, a year had passed since they wrote their note
"Hmm... I guess I don't need this fridge anymore... HONEY!!!!! IM GONNA GO DUMP THE REFRIGERATOR IN THE OCEAN!!!!!!! I'LL BE BACK BEFORE DINNER!!!!!!!!!!!"
Clint is so charming!
Im from fxbg!! Gotta love it
He’s special.
I'VE FOUND DENTURES BEFORE! Didn't hear that mentioned ahaha. I picked them up right out of low tide when I was like 8. My mom was horrified
Some blackberry phones, huh?
Oh Hillary...
Lol..
They're 1st anniversary was on my birthday! Congrats!
Elayne Podolske too bad their second anniversary was on another day
this really connects to the book im *currently* reading ... The Tale of a Time Being or something like that ... its about a hello kitty lunchbox tho not a message in a bottle
She really wanted his favorite message to be hers ...lol
I haven't watched yet but my guess is because he went and looked LOL
Love how Americans pronounce buoys like booeys gives me a good laugh every time
Kinda reminds me of the game Assassin's Creed IV where you find a bottle and when you collect it (you need to collect 20 bottles btw), it tells you a story of a random citizen with his encounter of a big shot Templar.
Extremely interesting stuff... I have to wonder what the ratio is of bottles sans messages inside is vs bottled messages?
It would be cool if there was an ARG that started with a message in a bottle with a website address on it.
Ya know when you tell people exactly where their bottles gonna end up it kinda takes the magic out of it. So thanks I guess....
