  • My friend Wes brought over a gear box from his Kubota Lawn mower. The deck is a 60 inch (RCK60P-21Z). It had a bad bearing in the box. I dissembled it enough to find the pieces parts necessary for the repairs and I order all my parts from messicks.com. Some parts were available at the time I made my initial order and I received those parts. Installed them and needed more parts. Once they became available, I ordered those too and completed the rebuild on the gear box. This video picks up sort of in the middle of that rebuild. The box is together and I remove all the parts then install all of them again.

    You are the first I've watched that found the bevel gear "loose" in the bearing. I've rebuilt two gear boxes and had to press the gear out of the "special size bear- ing". It was a .001 press fit. Also, really thin "washers" are shims to set the backlash between the bevel gears. VERY IMPORTANT....

      Mr. Lindsey, Thanks for watching our video and sharing your thoughts. If this does fail, I will buy him another box. Although he didn't pay me to do this, I strongly believe that if something I did caused it to fail, I will own that mistake and pay for it. Not to be a punk, I'm hoping you are wrong this one! Thanks for pointing this out. This was an editing error. Unfortunately one I can't go back and fix. In the end the pulley went back in the box correctly, the pulley was put on and all is well. I appreciate you watching the video an taking a minute to leave your comment. This is how we learn! Thanks Kevin

    Im fixing this for the local soccer club. Theirs leaked all the gear oil out and the gears ate themselves to death. It ran so hot that getting the pulley off required a bearing plate and a BFH. The bolt removal required a cheater bar on my rachet to break it free. Now upon reassembly I cant get the horizontal shaft in far enough so I can set the snap ring behind the bearing. Looks like yours did the same, and pressing it in only presses the gear further on the shaft than it looks like it was made to.

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  Před rokem

      Mine came apart relatively easily but I did have some challenges putting it back together. Have you gotten yours back together yet? It may be a factor of the shims for the lash. When I did mine, I took everything apart and put it back in the same order. I never checked the lash. Which is what will probably cause the next failure... Kevin

      @@MillGapFarms AHA ! In the video you did it wrong too because the diagram is misleading. @7:55 you can see you installed the bearing on the short side of the shaft and then couldn't seat the bearing all the way in. The bearing on the horizontal shaft goes on the long side, not the short side! After fixing that it was easy to reassemble. The transition @9:07 clearly you moved the bearing to the long side of the shaft AND you installed the shaft in the opposite side of the case, which was the wrong side.

    I notice at 9:07 the bearing is flush. Then it goes to you installing the shims and spring clip. I'm having trouble getting the bearing to go in deep enough for the spring clip to be installed. I've read other posts that say the parts diagram is incorrect and the bearing goes on the inside of the shoulder on the shaft. Is that what you did?

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for watching our video Mr. Wilson. I all honestly, I don't remember. I do recall it being a little sloppy when I put it together and I don't know if that was how it was supposed to be. This belonged to a friend and he brought it to me damaged. I don't know how it felt originally. I do have a 72" deck on our mower but so far I have not had to remove the box from the deck. I did put a pulley on it... and in a similar fashion, it did not go on as I thought it should... I'm sorry I'm not more help. I would love to know how it ends up working for you. Kevin

    • @jasonwilson-iy6yw
      @jasonwilson-iy6yw Před 2 měsíci

      Mine is also a 72", RCK72P. I've got it all back together and the only way I could get the bearing deep enough in the case was to put the bearing on the inside of the flange on the pinion shaft. Everything fit good so I'm pretty sure the parts diagram is incorrect. I tried it several times the way the diagram shows and couldn't get it to work. Thanks for your response.

    I'm trying to figure out what I need for an RCK60P-21z deck, the center spindle has play in it and the new Oregon 396-787 G6 blades touch one side. Is there a bearing in the spindle housing, or in the gearbox?

      @@MillGapFarms it's just the messicks app, still pretty nice to have. I think the issue is that Oregon has the wrong data on these blades. They should be 20 1/2, but Oregon thinks 20 9/16 is correct.

    I am sad to watch you assemble this gearbox incorrectly. It would have been a good idea for you to have taken a picture of the box prior to dissassembly, for reference when you are
    re-assemblying as you reassembled this box you have installed the input shaft through the front (capped) side of the case. The top fill caps and full caps/ plugs are toward the front of the deck for easy servicing. The video also does not show you installing the bottom seal over the output shaft. You would have noticed all of the gear oil pouring out of the bottom shaft upon refill.

      There is another comment saying the same thing. I think what happened was that during editing, I used the wrong clip. In the end, the pulley went on and the box back onto the deck. @MillGapFarms In the video you had some play in the shaft and made a comment. Did that correct itself when you attached the gearbox to the mower deck?

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  Před 11 měsíci

      I can't honestly say that once the pulley was put on the play stopped. I think there is a little play in the box itself by design, not a lot but some. That can be adjusted by putting in more ships. I can't say how much you should or should not have. After I finished with the gear box, I gave it back to my neighbor and he never used it. He got sick and can't use it. Kevin

    Why did you have to rebuild the gearbox?

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  Před 2 lety +2

      A bearing went bad. My thoughts were not to simply replace the one bearing but do them all including the seals. The challenge was that when I first did the parts order, some parts were not available. Thankfully all the parts came available and the gear box has most every wear part new. I had to take it apart about 5 times. Take it a step further, it is likely the machine was used on a hill a whole lot and the service interval for the gear lube may not have been adhered to. I don't think the bearing would have failed if it had enough lube. I'm not a mechanic...I do seem to play one on CZcams... Thanks for watching. Kevin
