  • I show how to replace the shift cable in Shimano ST EF50 shifters. I install a new cable into the left shifter in the video, but the right shifter is done pretty much the same way. The cable head sits in the hole slightly different on the right shifter.

    The EF-50 shifters I never minded having to remove the top cap on - always seemed to me to be good time to give the internals a good cleaning then lube everything up. 🙂

    RJ, Fred from RCB, All the screws are JIS, not Phillips on all asian products. Check it out. Prevent stripping screws that most people think are Phillips.

    While the cover is off its well worth giving the mechanism a good squirt with your favorite penetrating/lubrication spray as the factory grease goes bad and gums up the tiny pawls making the shifter skip gears or just quit shifting.

    Cable replacement is easy. What I am looking for is why my 8 spd rear shifter now only goes through four gears. I have is set now to hit the lowest four, but am looking to get full range back.

    To avoid stripping the heads out on those little screws, use a small jis standard screwdriver instead of a phillips. You will get much better engagement.

      Yep, Def jis if you have available.

      If you work on bicycles often, JIS screwdrivers are absolutely essential for these little screws, for derailleur limit screws, etc.
      Basically anything which looks like a Philips screw isn't one, and using a Philips driver is like using a 1/2" wrench on a 12mm nut. 8/10 times you'll be fine, but those other two times...

      some still think JIS and Phillips are the same..not so.

    • @OjStudios
      @OjStudios Před rokem +1

      Basically there is no JIS standard anymore. There is a DIN standard to which many better screwdrivers are made which is actually compatible with both, philips and JIS. But sure, if you find JIS standard drivers somewhere, go with them if working on bikes.

    • @MrAmorti
      @MrAmorti Před rokem +1

      @@OjStudios link please? Philips screws and drivers are intentionally made to cam out while JIS aren't, I'd be interested in how they squared that circle. Also since Philips is an American standard, JIS is Japanese, and DIN is German, it would be tough to get JIS and Philips binned in their respective countries for DIN.

    I've replaced many of these particular cables. Tip 1 use penetrating oil before you try to remove those small screws. Tip 2 before replacing screws apply grease to the threads to make your life easier next time.

    • @MrAmorti
      @MrAmorti Před rokem +2

      You need to consider where the oil or grease go. They absorb into the plastic causing it to swell. At most you want a plastic-safe silicon spray or silicon grease for this job!

    These are ubiquitous and people always try and use a phillips screw driver and strip them. JIS screw driver set is good to have. Often they are rusted in place. The covers are always broken and have yellowed sight glass that can be sanded or compounded back to like new. Brake clean or carb clean on sticky shfters followed by wd and triflow will save old slipping shifters as well. These are easy to save from the trash can.

    Hi RJ, I have a question. I recently bought a bike friday folding bike to restore. Didn't really do full inspection and noticed that the bike came with 3x8 shifters. The rear is 8 speed but the chain ring is 2 speed. Can I be able to upgrade to a better 3x8 shifter set or reuse the old one. The old is beat up.

    Shouldn't you fully screw in the barrel adjuster too so that you can tension it afterwards?

    What about the other end?? It doesn’t just change gears because you put a new cable on the handlebar end.

      @@feedbackzaloop 0:01 The screws are exposed in a recessed area. If you bike in the rain, as I do, it will just sit in there.

      V brakes are long pull, same same as disc brakes.
