- This video is about How To Replace Gear Cables On A Shimano 5700 105 Shifter. I demonstrate the process of removing and reinstalling a new gear cable on a bike with internal cable routing. I replace the inner gear cable, housing, and handlebar tape as well.
Useful for me this as I'm doing up a 2013 bike and I missed this generation of shifters. Thanks.
You're welcome!!
I enjoy your videos very much! Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!
Straight and to the point. Thanks for sharing

Hey, so i have that same system, the 105 5700, i haven't taken it to a local shop yer but i can't get it to shift to the last two smallest cogs next to tge frame. Just wondering if you had any adjustments hints on that.
Thanks, and subscribed yes!
what I was looking for on the 5700 was where to feed the front side cable. I can't see as well as I used to. You should always face the casing after you cut it. I use a Dremel or my high speed grinder. but thanks as I did pick up a few pointers.

Hey man great, great video thank you ! I'm also riding on Shimano 105 5700 and my front gear cable broke so I tried to replace it but now that I've reput everything in place it isn't working. So I thought you might be able to help me since the shifter are different for the rear and front gear
It's basically the same thing, just like a mirror image. Make sure the cable head is fully engaged into the pocket where it fits into the shifter. Also, if the old cable frayed apart and left strands of broken cable in the shifter, it will cause issues unless it's all cleaned out.
Joey Mesa It’s all good I looked back to what I did and the problem was that I didn’t put the cable into the pocket and my shifter wasn’t on the lowest gear so it’s all good now thank you very much
Where did you get your teflon tubing from and what size and brand did you use?
I usually get it from frame sets that have these tubes routed through internal cable routed frames. I just save them after the bike has been built and the cables all set up. Jagwire sells 30 meter rolls of it for about $10 amzn.to/3nGkSwi
Good job
Thanks
Can you push the inner cable out and replace it, with out pulling the housing out?
Usually yes. Just make sure the housing isn't kinked or more than a few years old, otherwise you'll get the best performance by replacing both the inner and the housing.
Thanks. What tires are you running on your commuter right now?
You're welcome! On my Mesamods commuter, I've got a Maxxis Rambler 700x38 in the rear, and a Teravail Cannonball 700x42 in the front. Thats been working well the last 3 weeks, which has been pretty snowy. If it gets icy, I'll put my 45NRTH Gravdal studded tire on the front. If the commute is clear and dry, I'll ride the Pivot Vault. It currently has some Scwalbe Lugano 2 700x32 slick tires that were gifted to me.
Thanks for your question!
Did you leave the inner cables inside the frame?
Sorry, I kind of fast forwarded through the part where I was running the cables back through the frame, but I just use the guide tubes to quickly run the inner wires back through the frame. Once I get the inner wires ran through each point (down tube to the bottom bracket and chain stay from the bottom bracket cable guide to the rear derailleur cable stop), I just pull the guide tube out use them for the same purpose on another repair. Thanks for the question! I should have clarified this part better in the description.
Joey Mesa thank you for replying.... i have learned a lot from your videos!!
is this bike good for touring?
any bike is.
I’m enjoying the bike so far czcams.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
Yes, the value is great! So much better. I don't even know what we're comparing it to, but it's a great saver of the money, how can you beat it? It was FREE! (yeah, you may have had to skip through some adds, but hey, I gotta survive somehow!)
It's a place to poop in the woods.
There are very few shifter cable installing videos. This one is no exception. Mediocre.
