ZongZi is only a festival food for most parts of China, but it is a daily breakfast food in ZheJiang Province. Southern provinces people prefer sweet flavour, Northern provinces prefer salty flavour.

May.5th(Chinese calendar) is the day when Yang overcomes Yin.
Whether becomes hotter, bugs and poison things like snake comes out.
People do specific things to avoid poison things. Like drinking medicine alcohol, race dragon boat, 5 color bracelets.
Later other stories comes in like Qu Yuan.

this is a good question. the younger generation is eating like western young people. KFC, mcdonalds, etc They love fried chicken like Hope Star. But I think they eat smaller portions. I've been to western countries like australia where the chinese couples have to share a 1 person meal because it's too big.
hard to tell now, maybe in 2 generations?

No. Because Chinese people don't eat so much meat as western people. 2/3 of our food is vegetables, fruit and rice. Just check Japan, South Korea and Singapore, they are rich but they are still slim.

Pronunciation question: to my ear (I'm a bit of a linguist), both you and Serena seem to alternate freely between zongzi and zhongzi. Is this type of variation common? Or is my hearing worse than I realise? ∑:ᴈ

the pinyin is "zong-zi".Im fairly sure that some northern folks with heavy accents will add the "h" sound, but "zong" is the correct way. If you say "zhong-zi" without context i won't know immediately what u're refering to
