"If you can't have fun when you're playing music with your friends, then what is life all about I ask you?"
To true.
I was aware of Stu as a bassist but generally unfamiliar with his work. However, his massive "No Regerts" tattoo has told me everything I need to know about him. Fucking legend.
Man, Stu is such a cool guy, he's a legend but still talks about his instruments like a geeky dude. This style of video is something I like a lot, cause i can see many basses I'll never have 😂😂
First, Yes to more "Bass Tales."
Second, Stu Hamm is such a great bassist, and he is a legend in his own time. However, like most legendary bassists he is such a regular guy. Definately one of my idols.
And last, but not least, much love and get well soon to George the Bass Puppy.
I would definitely need more, and again, it would be amazing to see Mr. Tony Levin.
That’s awesome definitely we need more, had the pleasure meeting him couple of days ago, what a great guy and bass player, @George, get well bud 🙂
refbassist cheers dude 💪
That was strange .. it was like we were sitting down to visit in his home, with a cuppa tea and having a chat / tour - I felt really privileged and right at home. I really enjoyed this vid, thanks. Bring on some more!
Later on in the year everyone actually was at home not allowed out...
You should get Joe Dart on this show so he can tell you about his two basses that he owns haha.

"But if you can't have fun while you're playing with your friends then what is life all about?"
What a legend.
2:22 That was the best door knock recording of all time. Scared the crap outta me I thought someone was knocking on my bedroom window in the middle of the night.
Same here, Even now that i know that is in the Video, i actually think somebody is knocking on my balcony doof
LOL
Me too
jesus me too, knocked my bass against the table :(
That is so bizarre me too I shit my pants!! Late at night next to the window!!
Yeah what the hell. My outer door is just to my right, and I ran over to check who was outside. I was absolutely certain someone knocked.
I never got to meet Stuart Hamm, but I almost had Stu give me a lesson when he was in L.A. He was doing a bass workshop at a school a few years ago. I didn't have any money to pay for the opportunity to learn from him and I told him so. Stu told me if I could make it out to North Hollywood I believe it was he would squeeze me in for free. What an offer ! Then my wife took ill and couldn't make it happen. Stu was such a nice human being that I will never forget his offer to me that day. God Bless Stu for his kindness
SH: "2020 is looking good, gonna be touring with..."
The world: "This did not age well"
HAMMTASTIC!!!
Like milk id say
😔
4 days after this went live the world went to shit
Right, I'm reading this in 2024, and I had the same thought. I'm not sure those shows or sessions went as planned.
That was so good on so many levels bro! So good to see and hear Stu talking, playing and describing his bass history. Nice introspective into his lifestyle and history.
Bryan Walsh cheers for the great feedback Bryan 🙌
It's a shame that he no longer seems to have his Kubiki Factor basses. That's what he was rocking when I first saw him.
Get well soon, puppeh!!!
Definitely more Bass Tales please, and get well soon George 🐕🐶🐾
😳😳That Fretless Fender URGE 2 named "Fred"😳😳 I am a Fretless Bass player and Stu Hamm is the one who got me into learning to play Bass with his performance on the Satriani Live in San Fransisco, my first song I learned was his "Country" Song, still learning the faster parts. He is a LEGEND!!
Love this style of content. Love it!!!!
John Brady cheers for the feedback John 🙌
Production on this video was top notch. High five for the editor.
Stu has been a hero of mine since Radio Free Albemuth. Thank you for having him on. Love this bass tale.
"2020's lookin' good."
HAH! That aged like milk...
hmmmmmm cheeeeese aaarghlghlgllh
Aged like a dead skunk locked in a car in the Florida sun....
OMG! “No Regerts” tattoo! Hillarious.
There’s a bass player that have used mainly 2 bass brands through his very extensive career; even though, I saw videos with other unexpected basses. He’s not technical on bass sound, he would just plug it into the amp and play. But he’s a living legend and started as a guitarist and piano player. By now I think you know who I’m talking about. Through his life, millions of interviews but Not one, really NOT ONE have ever ask him what influential source (if there was any), help him to develop his creativity in his bass lines. His bass technique, etc. In few words interview him as a bass player.
Please be the first one to do it while his still alive....... “Sir Paul”.
Seconded!
This post brought back some good memories about when I worked for Fender in Mexico back in the 90's. I had the honor to meet Mr. Stu Hamm and we all watched him play the Mexican Fender Signature basses we were producing at that time... Thanks for this post!!!
Please do more of these! But man, what a GREAT way to start a series - can't get enough STUUUU. Best wishes for a speedy recovery George (he's one of my favorite Woofers)!
To confirm your " was there any doubt " question. I will bet heavily everybody loved this segment and would love to see more. Live long.
I suggested this to Billy Sheehan, few weeks ago! He has a lot of nice basses too
Scott, I am one of your lifetime members. I actually own and got new, an original Stu Hamm Fender Urge 1. Stu, if you happen to read this, the serial number starts with
SE 92#### . The Bass is mint in Lake Placid Blue, doesn't have a scratch or mark on it and still has original plastic on it. Never been outside my home, never gigged and rarely played. It's been a joy to own and sits among my herd of Basses.
Love Stu... phenomenal player.
His work on Vai’s “passion and warfare “ was just amazing... my first introduction to his playing.
Great video.
I enjoyed it immensely.
Good stuff.👍💪🎸
Go back, bang on his door and say, "We aren't leaving until you bust out the Kubiki Factor!"
YES
Is it on next video?
kirt fulcher was thinking the same thing... got to play an ex factor forever ago, such a cool oddball bass.
Where’s the kubiki stu?
WORD
Great video series idea Scott! I liked it. Nice to see Stu’s basses. However IMO his best sound and trademark licks were with his Kubicki (never got that sound again). Opposite to that he has played some great stuff with Smith/Gambale but his recorded Fender sound with simply horrible.
Wow that was a lot of fun .. thanks Scott what a great video & thanks Stu .. I saw Stu play live with Satrinani in the summer of 88
I will never forget his solo .... incredible!! I remember saying to myself ala Waynes World ... I'm not worthy !! 😂😂 Stu Hamm is one of the greats 👍
Scott I'm looking forward to seeing more of these videos.
As a bassist, watch enthusiasts and collector of anything sentimental, I love this bass tale video.... to see equipment used for its purpose and the stories that come with it.
Scott
Thought Leader!
Great idea grab for bass players.
Stu is a fitting first for myself with Radio Free Albemuth being such an influential part of my musical past.
I'd say more please.
Bassists are people too.😎
This was excellent! Great idea!! More!!
Hey Scott, it was great to hear Stu geek out on his instruments. Please do more visits. And George, hope you're feeling better! Sending you some virtual doggie biscuits!
More please! Such a joy to see someone passionately showing off his gear and giving some background without it getting tacky! Keep it up!
"No Regerts" 😂😂😂
Hi George!!! Feel better buddy!
I love that tattoo! Whoever inked Stu was eating a Milky Way!
I was amazed that he didn't have any Kubicki basses..in my mind he's still playing them!
YES, MORE BASS TALES! I love this stuff. You couldn't have picked a nicer, more genuine, talented guy than Stu Hamm to start this series off! I had the pleasure of spending some time with him a few years ago. You won't find a nicer person in the music industry. Thanks Scott
..that Dr. Strange bass is the business...sounds great...and then he pulls out the 5 strings Groot model...omg.💕💕
This was a great idea and I really hope you continue this series!
No mention of Kubicki? I have Stu Hamm trading card from the mid 90's. I forget where I got it maybe bass player magazine?
Love you George!!!! Hope you're feeling better...... Yes, we need more "Bass Tales", please!!!!!
In the 90's I had spent all my savings to buy a bass Fender Stu Hamm "The Urge" ... I could play in that incredible instrument in many bands of Alternative Rock of Buenos Aires in those already distant 90's ... I had a white one (but with less benefits and then sold it), but that incredible green bass with his suitcase ... I still have it in my possession ... he is sleeping a long nap of more than ten years (since I emigrated to Europe), I hope that in a short time I can return to my payments with my parents to enjoy my family and that incredible electric bass ... If I remember correctly it had cost me about two thousand two hundred dollars ..., but Now I imagine it will be a piece for a collector and it will be worth a lot of money! ...
More bass tales!!! More bass tales!!! By the way I owned 3 stuart hamm signatures. Love them!!!
Awesome! Keep ‘em coming, Scott!
Lee Newsted cheers, Lee 💪
Totally enjoyed it! Glad to see the behind the scenes of Stu Hamm. Thanks for doing it
Loved it! The great Stu Hamm! Defiantly more, please. And all my love to George, hope the little guy is real better soon.
Sending bass love to George🎸❤️
Bass Love 💕💕
Nice video ! Surprised Stu didn’t show any of his old factor basses 🤔 nevertheless , really enjoyed this vid ... been a fan of Stu for a long time 🤘
Flow my tears song literally brings tears... such a masterpiece.
Scott!
Great idea! The premier vid is fantastic!!
Please keep 'em coming!
Keeping a good thought for George!!
Have a good week!!
Mate I love this content! Also best wishes to George, hope he gets well soon.
This was great Scott, definitely a brilliant idea 👍 Ahh, I was waiting for Stu to pull out his old Kubicki basses. Wonder if he still has them... 🤔
Absolutely we need more of those! Thanks, Scott!
Scott, 2 years later. Yes! Please! More Bass tales 😉😁
Why is the Kubicki skipped over? It's the most important bass of his career, surely.
Ah man, no Kubicki Ex-Factor... bummer
I was looking forward to seeing one of those.
great way to start the bass tales with Stu ... and George as well, keep it up Scott :-)
I know he has done this kind of thing before with his own videos but I find Leland Sklar to be a fascinating person with enormous bass talents and a collection of instruments with a rich history. I would love to see him collaborating with SBL!
I actually owned one of those in the late 90s. I had 300 bucks saved up when I graduated high school... my parents gave me another 500 as a graduation gift, and I spent everything on a new bass, a green Stu Hamm signature. Played and sounded great, but I eventually sold it because I became convinced it was the worst looking instrument ever made. Kinda miss it though in a nostalgia way.
Ugly. In the best way. Fenders most unique bass ever
"Happy 2020" then proceeds to talk about upcoming tours....if only he knew then what he knows now!!😱 I guess he figures, "If you're scared, stay home". 😂
Yes please, Scott. We do need more of these!
SO good, more of these tales please!
Woof woof George, lots of love, get well soon you precious thing!
7:42 Anyone know what that chord is? Almost looks like he's playing a Gm9 but I would like the assistance of someone who knows better.
You got that right my man, in both what you see and hear. The only thing I'd say is that it'd more accurate to call it a Gm(add9) chord, but that's just me splitting hairs
Too bad the Kubicki's didn't get some airtime! Owned an Urge 1 too and it was an awesome bass..but man, Kubicki's though ;)
Gotta admit, that's why I watched.
Loved the tour of Stu’s basses not to mention the music! Let’s keep it going!!
What a great idea, these Bass Tales! 😀 👍 Can't wait to see the next one. 😋
"2020 is looking good!" well, that didn't age well...
What an amazing vid!!
Thanx a lot, all of you, who made this happen.
Absolutely more of these please. Never seen an urge bass. Now its all I want.
Scott, yes please more of this type of content. I enjoyed it and learned from it. Thanks.
Keep these coming!! Watched all the way through and very very good. Prayers to George!!
More, More, More Bass Tales PLEEEAAASSEEE!!!
(and feel better soon George!)
bass tales is a fantasitic idea, that will get major traction. im sure many would love to learn more about Alembic, specifically Phil Lesh and John Entwistlde's basses for episodes. great channel, thanks
Yes... This is awesome. Got to love hearing stories from our mentors and peers. It's awesome to make a greater connection.
I love the Mel bass! My music teacher told me to buy Joe Satriani - Live in San Fransisco, and said, nevermind the guy with the sun glasses, listen to the bass guy in the hawaii shirt, and be awed... oh man, Stu is one of my biggest influences, so amazing to see this interview! :D
I love this idea. You KNOW you gotta get Flea in one of these episodes. My inspiration for starting.
Yes , I have learned and continue to learn about the bass and bass players I never knew of . Including Scott, of Scott's Bass lesson's.
I Love it !!! Bassist for Life,
God Bless ,Keep up the good work!!!
Man Thanks Scott for this kind of videos you are the best and you have the best bass channel in all youtube!!! And gotta love Stu and how a lot of his basses have those comics and superheroes stuff on them. Such an amazing musician and cool dude.
A true "been-there-done-that" trooper. I met Stu when he was with Satriani, let's just say, a while ago. We were both much younger, but my friend and their roadie Dave Kohls introduced me. Had some great face time in the green room. He was and still is a hero.
Love hearing and sharing road stories with old road-dog buddies. Fun ones, and rock--n-roll horror stories. They accumulate.
Massive thumb up! Keep on! No one better than Stu to start this series, thanks!
Hoping George feels better soon.
Realy great idea,Scott!!👍👍👍...more,more,please!!🤟
This was an AWESOME video! More, more, more! Thank you for all you do!
Stu! Luv the guy, so awesome! If following episodes are like this, bring them on! Best wishes to George. Feel better soon buddy.
YES! More of these videos! Love seeing everybody's guitars. Great stuff! Thanks, Scott.
There are some very interesting subtle custom details on his Warwicks - other than the body shape of the 4 strings it's also that the neck, pickups and bridge sit deeper in the body than on a standard Warwick! It truly is personalising the bass for the user. Cool collection.
Yes!! More!! I have always wanted an Urge II! It’s funny when the guy was such a monster, so aggressive and powerful and he’s just this quiet gentle dude!
Good stuff. I'd like to see more of that. What a cool guy Stu Hamm is. Been listening to him forever but I've never heard an interview. Get well George!
This is great!... I LOVE it! do more of these ... so many players have great stories to tell.
Bass tales. Brilliant. Yes, please. Aram Bedrosian? Thanks Scott.
I know I bought the right bass because every time I watch these videos about various wonderful bass guitars I look over at my customized polar white Fender Jazz fretless & get goosebumps.
Scott,
I'm a total beginner and stumbled across your channel on CZcams many weeks ago. Just now saw this video, so I'm offering a (belated) shout-out of love to George...hope he's back to his normal doggie-self. Can't imagine life without dogs. I enjoy seeing the occasional little touches of your family--it speaks loudly of your character. Many of your videos are absolutely fascinating, some are heartwarming...all are excellent! It's like you've come over to my home for an afternoon coffee and we're just chatting! Cheers!
Great to see Stu and his lineup
Prayers and good thoughts to George!
You guys hit it out the park with this series !!!
This was great! Inspired me to play my Warwick at the gig tonight ;). More please! And you’re a good boy George! You’ll be back chasing tail in no time buddy!
@Scott I like this format to be able to hear how our favorite bass players evolved from the early day and their influences. Keep it coming Scott
Scott so glad you got stu on SBL!! One of my all time favorite bass players!!! He has shaped so much of my playing!!!
Get well soon, George!! And yes - more Bass Tales! What a GREAT kick-off with Stu!
