I came across a few of those over the years . They'd rather die than get caught and they'd kill themselves trying to take you out if you you managed to drop a loop on them ! Catching them with a short rope tied hard and fast was the only option we had out there in the brush on steep terrain , and once you threw that loop ; you were committed to a hell of fight as soon as you jerked your slack out and the critter knew it had been caught ! That kind of country didn't allow for feeding lots of rope to a slick horn and being able to keep your horse put together to save on the stress that critter puts on him as he hit the end of that rope ! Those were some heart pounding runs and dome years, we had to catch as many of those old wild ones to help balance the tally sheet at the end of the year . Missing just a few meant not making a profit or possibly being in the hole on a bad year . Some of those wild ones had been successful at avoiding capture for several years and sometimes had managed to hide and not be seen even , for a year or 2 , making you think that maybe they had died or left the country for good !!! Once caught , you still had to figure put how to get them home . Tying them to a tree and let them make the base of their horn get pretty sore fighting that rope was the only way you could lead them out of that area to where you could load them on a trailer and haul them home or straight to the sale barn . You knew you earned your pay check when you finally got to sell them LOL .
