oxy-: oxygen-based
dane-: inorganic compound containing only bonding with hydrogen, kind of similar to meth"ane"
Both are non metals so it would make it a covalent bond. For naming covalent bonds you use the prefixes like mono, di, hexta, hetpa, deca... to represent how many are present.
Hydrogen is 2 so its Di
Oxygen is one so its Mono.

Accully it has many names. It is also an acid and a base because it contains Hydrogen by itself and also Hydroxide. This means it can be called Hydrogen Hydroxide if your using it as a base and if you using it as an acid you would call it Hydroxic Acid.

i once asked this question to my teacher, and she said there is nothing like that. thank you, this question always lurked in my mind.
As has been mentioned, the IUPAC name for water is oxidane. It can be named dihydrogen monoxide, or more simply hydrogen oxide. Sometimes it helps my students to name it hydrogen hydroxide, which gives insight into its acid/base behaviour.

Actually we don't consider it as dihydrogen monoxide.It's just Hydrogen Monoxide.For ex: H2S, We tell it as hydrogen sulphide not dihydrogen Sulphide.
