    Surprised the sailor theory got left out, as the possibility of a sailor being in town for a few months and then leaving again both explains the suddent start, and the abrupt stop immediately after a massive escalation. It also opens up a whole list of other suspects, including several other serial killers with similar MOs whose only reason for not being considered as Jack is that they weren't English, despite their whereabouts being either unknown, or confirmed to be in London, at the time of the ripper murders. I cannot remember the names, but at least one was a Prussian (I think) sailor who killed in various ports with a similar MO to Jack the Ripper.

    I am hoping the writer read "The Five" by Hallie Rubenhold, which looks at the lives of the five canonical victims and goes into who they were when they were alive and not just as the victims of serial killer. At the time of their deaths I believe only one of them could be classed as a sex worker (another had been forced into it when she was younger, but wasn't turning tricks when she was murdered), as such only two things were a common thread for them: the first being they were all in the depths of poverty and deprivation that was East London of the 1880s; the second being they all struggled with alcoholism (again, a symptom of the horrendous poverty and conditions they were forced to live in).
    My theory for who Jack was is that he was some religious nutter on some temperance kick, who targeted the women because they were drunks.

    I'm intrigued by Charles Cross/Lechmere. He was found with Polly/Mary Anne Nichols by Robert Paul and claimed to have just found her. He was local to both neighborhoods, living in one and growing up in the other, and he likely would have walked to work along the streets where 3 of the bodies were found around the time of their murders in the early morning, the other 2 (double) occurring in his mother's neighborhood on his only day off. He only came forward after Robert Paul mentioned him in the press, gave an alternate name, and told a false story during the inquest. I think he was also going through a difficult time with his family, which could have been a stressor. Everything that points to him is completely circumstantial, but it's interesting.

      I find that suspect interesting, too. In a documentary -- I think its title is "The Missing Evidence: Jack the Ripper," a researcher says that Cross lied to the first constable he encountered when he went with Robert Paul to find help and told him was that there was another constable already with the body. He told the constable this when Paul was out of earshot, and when this constable arrived at the scene, he found another cop who had just encountered the body. This covered Cross's lie. I think Cross is very much the sort of a person who could be the Ripper: a seemingly ordinary man who blended in and knew the area very well. My only question is that if Cross was the Ripper, why did he stop? Or did he stop? We would need to know about his life after the last killing to find an answer.

You probably were smiling as you were writing this comment, thinking that it was such a clever response, but sorry to disappoint. To answer your response, yes; it would be more suspicious if it happened twice if we were talking about the 1960s until now. We aren't thought, we are talking about the 1890s. The whole point of my original comment was that there is that they don't take pictures of witnesses in the 1890s, so unless the first responding officer is the exact same officer, he could have just gave another name and they would have been none the wiser. I feel like people often confuse police tactics back then with now, which are not at all the same.

      As a modern day investigator who was asked to look into the particlars of this suspect said in an interview: if Charles L WASN'T the Ripper, then he was a pretty unlucky man to have been in such proximity to a homicidal individual during one of his brutal crimes...and on multiple occasions. It is know thst he would've been traveling through the areas of at least 3 of the victims locations at the times they were slain.
      The more i read about the guy the more suspicious he seems. The only catch is that there's no nice tidy explanation for the sudden cease in killings with this suspect, as he neither died shortly thereafter nor was incarcerated. So if it was him, he must have either satiated his killing urges or he made a conscious decision to stop before he got nicked. Maybe he had a close call with the authorities after the last murder that was never reported and it scared him straight. Or he may have gotten very lucky following several of the murders and decided that his bloodlust couldn't rely on luck forever

      It's because words accrue meaning and implication though us, and academics don't seem to have caught on the the fact that it is what the word is associated with which is conferring negative connotations rather than the word itself. We see another example of this with constantly shifting language around the mentally handicapped (handicapped itself is an example, many of the words which are now seen as insulting were first introduced exactly because they were value free and the last term used was no longer seen as such). There has also been somewhat of a history with what people call prisons, penitentiary for example was chosen to suggest that the prisoners were doing penance for their crimes (which is meant to sound like an acceptable alternative to being punished, harsh punishments being supported by the vast majority of the population of the time, for example support for the death penalty only went under 50% support in 2010 or so in Britain, the wishes of the population have exceedingly little to do with policy much of the time, this creates a climate where policy makers and advocates attempt to mould public sentiments through clever use of language and implicit meaning, creating a bit of a mess, and a good deal of examples for people like me) by social reformers (usually Quakers).

    • @vorynrosethorn903
      @vorynrosethorn903 Před rokem

      *use
      The reason why prostitute sounds better is that it is associated with the idea of the fallen woman and other sympathetic portrayals (which weren't ever particularly worried about according with fact but still had an element of truth to them even is a distorted one) of the moral women forced between the debasement of herself or the starvation of her children (you can perhaps see why modern ideologues hate the word, it has many implicit ideas and moral assumptions which they wish to supersede), sexworker on the other hand brings up images of e-whores, people with few redeeming personal qualities who pray on desperate young losers for financial gain, not the implicit association the progressives were planning on but when you introduce value free language what will become imprinted on it is the character of the people who use it rather than whatever they straight up demand people think. Prostitute was effected by deliberate campaigns to effect perceptions by Victorians, they didn't just tell people not to think anything negative of it.

    • @jasmijnvenner2403
      @jasmijnvenner2403 Před rokem +9

      @Voryn Rosethorn Frankly, I think the term “sex worker” provokes more negative connotations than prostitute, and it’s utterly absurd that someone finds the the word “prostitute” upsetting. The issue is that Lechmere did not match a lot of things the ripper more than likely had. He had no history of violence or hatred toward woman, no skill in butchery or surgery, also he wasn't found hunched over the victim, the actually inquest states that Paul saw him standing in the middle of the road before Charles called out to him and that they were 40 yards apart, if they were that far apart why would Charles just run, it was dark out and no one saw his face, instead dhe chooses to linger and talk? With potential blood on his clothing and a hidden murder weapon? It's just too far of a stretch to me

Killers can de-escalate after reaching an extreme point, especially if there was some intervention or they felt things had gotten to close. Arrest for a different crime, hospital for someone who's gone a bit mad, something that got him off the street for a while and he had to be a people again. I think of Bundy and how he could spike so viciously in his violence but then get caught and just Be A Person again. Obviously a fake creepy one but he wasn't a gibbering lunatic lunging at everyone.
    I can see Ripper peaking then scaling back. And, again, there's cross over with the Torso killer. What are the chances, really, that two killers with similar MO's operated so close together at the same time? A torso was found in the newly laid foundations for the Met! I think the Yorkshire Ripper (Peter Sutcliffe) would be a good follow up to this video in demonstrating how even a century later Jack the Ripper has influenced the general consciousness and culture. I don't think there's already an episode on him, but I could be wrong?

    I'm in the Cross/Lechmere camp, myself. If you go by what we know of modern serial killers, this unassuming little man makes the most sense. Not dramatic. Not insane. Not sensational. Just boring old evil.

    I love how the misspellings drive Simon mad. They do it to me, too. I do collaborative writing with a number of people all over the world, and one of the things that drives me insane is when someone tries to write an accent. The intentional misspellings make me twitch. Anyway, when you read the letters out loud, the way that those painfully misspelled words would sound when spoken, it almost seems as though they were trying to write a particular accent. Now, this could be intentional, so that they seemed uneducated, or from some other area. Or they weren't particularly book smart, which means that they were sounding out words. I'm kind of leaning on the affectation of an accent, trying to throw the police off, because, well, the handwriting alone would suggest at least some schooling. And it just feels like that day's equivalent of "cringe" fan-fic writing.

    9:47 From that description, Charles Cross should have seen who killed her. The wounds were that fresh.
    Or because he 'found' her, he should be on the top of the list of who might be the killer.
    And the fact that he lied to the police and that isn't his real name.
    His real name was Charles Allen Lechmere.
    I will continue listening, to hear if this comes up.
    1:28:05 THANK YOU!!!! Finally

    You should do an episode on Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate, they're the Bonnie and Clyde of Nebraska USA where I live.
    We've also had Doctor Anthony Garcia, nasty piece of work also went down in Nebraska

    "Prostitute" isn't the wrong word to use imho.
    Sex worker is a catch all term. In enough years, that term will have whatever connotations the word prostitute had. What's mad is just using "prostitute" when it is accurate and not judging people for being prostitutes is the actual answer. Because people that judge prostitutes will judge sex workers just the same.
    That's off topic, though.

      I agree - plus 'sex worker' makes it seem a lot more of a voluntary choice than many of these women had.

    Matt and Simon! Great episode! Was very uncertain about whether I should listen to the content because of the dire disturbing nature of it. But, I feel that there is a very human and realistic presentation behind this. It feels like I'm sitting with friends at a get together and listening to a story. Just missing a glass of something with alcohol.
