  • The X-Carve CNC can be fitted with a small Dewalt router that provides the power needed to turn it into a very useful machine. In this video I show how to fit the router and demonstrate the new setup. My next video will show how easy it is to make a dust boot using Vectric's VCarve Pro software.

It does look like a fun machine. Interested to see what you make with it. Thanks for the video, very informative.

+nippychippy Hi Robert, Many thanks. I have a few ideas but I need time to squeeze it all in. Peter

You could use double sided tape to hold down the workpiece. Keep up the good work and a happy new year too you

It seems I let you in for a lot of work and expense but at least it is keeping you out of the pub. Happy New Year and best regards.

+Ron Cooper Hi Ron, Yes, it is all your fault - Haha ! I am now quite excited about the possibilities with this machine. There are two key things that have brought the X-Carve into its own - the Dewalt router and the Vectric VCarve Pro software which I now use. Cheers Peter

you could add a relay to turn the router on and off with the DC motor pins

+Amaury Jacquot Hi Amaury, Yes, that is a good idea. I did look a couple of weeks ago for some that I have had for years but could not find them. For now I will continue as I am but it is certainly worth considering in future. Peter

Really great video, what was the material used round the wood to provide the bristles? I did think maybe draft proof strip of black bristles with the metal strip along the back if I was to recreate it and wondered if you'd tried other things asides from the material shown in the clip? If you prefer to leave it for the other video that's fine, just interested.

+Craig Hastie Hi Craig, You know the type of plastic used in those cartons that are used for kit on those hanging displays? It is clear and about 0.3 mm thick. It is also a devil to get at the contents inside and I usually have to cut m way in. I had some of that and cut it into strips and then cut almost all the way across at about 2 mm intervals. This was then stuck on with double sided tape and finished with some gaffer tape. I will be releasing a video about this very soon. Peter

What kind of ER collet do you use for smaller bit sizes?

Hi Kasper, I got the Precision Collets from Inventables. Petetr

Peter, did you check the router spindle is square to the work surface, or is the mounting bracket self-aligning. I think I would want to check for square anyway. And is there any provision for squaring the router to the work table, maybe the eccentric rollers for the Z axis but you didn't mention if you needed to square it up. Thanks, enjoy all your videos, keep them coming please.

Hi Bob, I did check but did not realise it was not in the video. I think that I show the process in one of the setting up videos for the X-Carve. Peter

that particular model of router is superior for the x-carve because the power cord leaves the router vertically unlike the dw611 model which has the power cord leaving from the side.

What sort of bit where you using and do you have a recommended place of purchase. Thanks

+Ben Johnson Hi Ben, When I made the prototype dust boot (not shown in this video) I was using the 24v spindle and had to use a two flute straight cutter that was short in length in order to minimise the awful vibration. When I installed the Dewalt and made the final dust boot I was able to use a spiral upcut (1/4" shank and quite long) that came from Inventables. Forgive me I can't remember where you live but if I were in the US I would go for Whiteside which can be found in the UK through Routercutter dot co dot UK. Peter

Hey, on the off chance - if you have either of the bases and don't want them, I'd be happy to buy!
