Check out "Allison" for a great song, and for a tearjerker, check out "Veronica", which was written about his grandmother and her journey through her Alzheimer's disease. He wrote it after a visit to a nursing home to see her, where she was remembering all the things of her youth, and thinking she was still that age. He did a fantastic job with describing it.

He's an incredibly under rated lyricist. His turn of phrase, acerbic humourous comments and observations are second to none. That track comes from the album 'Punch The Clock', every track a gem, to say no fillers would be tales of the obvious as he never does them. If I had to narrow it down (because I would recommend every track on it) to only one track for you to react to it'd be 'Ship Building' - a beautiful composition again with a lot of hidden/twisted meaning in the lyrics.

You know how sometimes in sport, you are better off just doing it than overthinking. In effect you are letting the subconscious do it's thing and the best thing your consciousness can do is not get in the way. Well when the writers of really great songs say "Oh I wrote it in ten minutes" I think it is similar. Their subconcious did all the hard work first and all they did consciously (ie the ten minutes) was capture the thought.

If you like good lyrics, you should delve into Elvis' catalog. He is without a doubt the finest lyricist in the 20th century, although he doesn't get credit for it. This song is a great example of his fluidity with metaphor and simile. How he uses one great pun after another to describe the course of a doomed relationship... it's breathtaking really. And don't doubt that he didn't write the whole thing in ten minutes. His prolific output from 1977 through the 80s and into the 90s was legendary: easily an album a year through that whole stretch.
Long been my favorite singer-songwriter ever in the pop space.
