My father in law used to refuel these from his KC-135. He said they had to start at about 25,000 feet in altitude in a steep descent in order to keep up with the Blackbird who was slowing way down to get refueled. Also, when refueled at night, after flying at supersonic speeds, they would glow with the heat!
Sort of like when I was racing around the HS parking lot around the islands in my SAAB Turbo and afterwards popped the hood... lol.. the turbo was cherry red!
@@Quanuck No....Nothing like that.....Not even close
@@28russ Dude, my turbo was as red as an electric stove cooking surface..lol.. YES, just like that, the glow around it sure was...
@@Quanuck Hardly comparable to flying at mach 3 and glowing because of the heat caused by air friction because they're going so fuckin fast though is it......You can keep dreaming that your pissy little turbo is comparable...But NO.....Not even fuckin close....It's a ridiculous comparison Lmao
Maybe JUST barely. Titanium does not emit even a faint glow until its right at 1000 degrees F. The very leading edges might hit that, but not by any means the entire plane. So Russel Reiley, youre wrong. Quanuck's turbo was absolutely hotter than a SR-71.
I was treated to a display of that awesome rumble in 1994 at an air show at Point Mugu CA. The Blackbird made a ‘ dirty’ low and slow pass probably doing 170 knots. The next pass the pilot lit off the burners and brought the crowd to their feet. He was out of sight in a minute and we were told would be landing at Beale AFB 400 miles north in about 20 minutes. A thrill of a lifetime. Everyone should have such an opportunity to see the greatest plane ever built.

We were at that show too. Hard to believe next year it will be 30 years ago. I could be wrong, but I always though the pilot made three passes. The last pass I believe was 400 knots, lit the burners then went vertical. Hopefully someone puts a video up on youtube. Be nice to see those fly-bys again. We are from the San Fernando Valley. And they designed this beauty with paper, pencil and slide rules. No computers
No computers?
The design work started in 1957 - not much available for computers back then. Yes, there were "state of the art" computers at Lockheed back then, but they were of extremely limited capability.
You don't need computers when aliens help you.
Thats correct !!!
Yeah and it was designed to take a photographs over Soviet Union where one of the main component (titanium) was brought from Soviet Union lol.

Its a nice jet, but as far as sheer beauty, I pick the F4U Corsair.
I was at this very show in 1997. This video doesn't do the sound justice. The pilot also circled around behind the crowd and came in behind the hangers so as not to be seen/heard and just as he cleared the hangers he threw it into full afterburner. The sound was like an explosion and everyone jumped. It was awesome.
i was literally thinking the exact same thing! no matter how good any video clip is, nothing compares to witnessing the sheer magnitude of power turbojets push out on a routine basis. i've never seen an SR-71 in flight :( only on the ground so you are very lucky. i've seen the blue angels at least 10 times but i will always long to see the absolute majesty of the blackbird in action. all hail the king of speed!
I totally agree! We had an airshow in our small town a while back and a B-1 bomber came in low from the west and, as it passed over the crowd...it pulled up into a 45 degree climb in full burners! It felt like someone was beating you on the chest with a baseball bat...I am not kidding. That thing was less than 50 feet off the runway before it pulled up....Holy Crap!
You mean Linn lane? That's pretty amazing I live near Nellis and Sahara and have for 31 years... small world. I remember that air show well, the Spectre Gunship was there among a large number of other great planes.
I guess it was 2002 - strange loud noise was heard over the city, and it was continuous explosion like rocking sound, like volcano. And it was non stop. The next day we learned that afterburner jammed on F16 and pilot circled over the city trying to fix it. He tried to land it to no avail, exploded at the runway.
I was there also. Took lots of still pictures of this great show!
Worked on the SR-71s at Beale AFB in the 1960s. Loved every minute of it.

My husband used to serve at the base in Wichita, Kansas when he saw the SR-71s.
My dad was an astronavigation specialist on the SR-71s at Beale during the 60s. You might have known him.
As a youngster was stationed at HAAF in '81. A lazy saturday afternoon they announced a bravo notification, so we dressed , hauled ass through the arms room, secured weapons and ammo and they started dropping us off around perimeter rd. As we were dropped, we were informed that NOTHING enters the area, and if they try, light their ass up. My squad got dropped at the interior airfield runway. About that time one of these quietly landed and drove into a hanger that was waiting with the doors open. Doors closed, then about an hour later they opened, the aircraft came back out, didn't even move out to the main runway. Rolled about two hundred yards down the taxi road, turned the nose towards the sky and pulled the triggers. Had never heard anything like it before, and have never heard anything like it since. Fantastic aircraft.
I read you...what were you guys smoking that night......

Wish I were there. Saw an SR-71 flying with your own eyes, feel that sound shaking the ground itself... Once in a lifetime experience.
I was at Mildenhall Air Base air show in Cambridge, UK when Blackbird flew over us after crossing the Atlantic in under an hour! We were all staggard when the announcement was made! Most of us did not even know she even existed at that time! What an aircraft!!
I got to see one take off from Kadena back around '74. From start to out of sight took 15 seconds. Sounded like a rocket going off.
I saw something like that at an air show in Michigan, I was unlucky enough to not be wearing ear protection and the sound felt like the earth was exploding.
saw them at edwards and palmdale when into Lockheed for service. You feel that sound in your chest.:)

I grew up in an area just East of Beale AFB. Our next-door neighbor was an SR-71 pilot. Once upon a time he did a low altitude pass over our houses as he left on a mission. I was in the yard splitting wood and the ground shook. One of the most exhilarating moments in my life. Such a bad-ass aircraft.
Wow that is a Nice story an experience

What an aircraft! You can say what you like, the Americans sure know how to build them. Just looking at the Blackbird gives me shivers, and I think I’m right in saying the SR71 project started in the 1950’s. That bad boy is about 70 years old. Quite amazing.
Traffic, research the TR-3B. Google or youtube search it. It's real. I've seen it flying over me at very close range.... something I will never forget!!

Flying back to Fairchild in the middle of the night years ago we heard over ATC, Flash 01 requesting flight level 6-0-0.(60,000ft) ATC came back go right ahead if you think you can get there.

SR 71 returning to Beale AFB
@MJW Check out the la speedcheck story if you haven't already seen it
Yeah, ATC wasn't aware that the airplane in their airspace was an SR-71. They had no idea that the target on their screen whose altitude had been specially briefed was a high performance military aircraft.
All the SR-71 stories people tell are so ridiculous.
Fairchild, Washington?
If I had a dollar for every time I'd read this story or some variation of it, I'd have enough money to buy an SR-71 myself by now.

I remember seeing the Blackbird at Mather AFB when I was 10. I remember it being like 110 degrees or more and the pilot came out in his flight suit and I was thinking, "poor guy, it must be so hot in that suit. He must hate that job." How little I knew. It was probably a cool 72 in his environment, and then gets in and fly's the fastest aircraft in the world. Yea, poor guy.
I remember the SR71 flying through our skies on a regular basis here in England. They look good at dusk with the afterburners on.

While we were living at Beale AFB in the 80s, every so often we could watch Blackbirds taking off at night. A few landing lights blinking in a jet-black shadow against the night sky, propelled by two blue cones of flame with the shock rings standing out even brighter...that was one impressive plane.

SR 71A is my favorite aircraft. Mainly because it looks so awesome. I know other jets do things better than it, but nothing can beat the looks of the Blackbird.

I don’t know what other Jets do better than the BlackBird . It flys at 85000 feet and travels at Mach 3.2 .
@robertlosasso4222 well tbh I'm not exactly sure either. But there has to be a good reason why they're not in active service any more. That's all I meant by saying other jets do things better
Great view of the shock diamonds when afterburner lit. Love to see this at pace but alas, blink and you miss it.
Unless you've seen/heard it live, you have no idea.
Agreed! It's unforgettable.
I was jogging by the flight line at Beale in 77, had to stop and put my fingers into my ears, it was glorious to the eyes and painful to the ears.
Indeed. I was a C-130 Electrical/Environmental technician from 87-99. Did 4 short tours to Mildenhall England. At that time, a small detachment of SR-71's operated there. One day, we were towing a C-130 to a spot for some maintenance... right in front of the "special" hangar for the SR. We could not see the aircraft, but the building had two MASSIVE... well, chimneys pointing up at one end. IT was the exhaust for running engines inside the hangar. If you are not familiar with aviation practices, that is very rare. It was a security measure. Less time for spy satellites to take pictures.... Anyway, while we were towing our lowly C-130 in front of it, they were apparently doing some full military burns of the engines.... (google it). What was remarkable, was the speed that the black exhaust was shooting skyward... it looked like a damn volcano...... impressive indeed......
Been there lived it, crew chief 1980-+1982, best job ever

It was always on my wishlist as well and still happy i could see this beauty flying 🙂
As a kid it was always the plane I wanted to see at an air show ! I was fortunate to see her at Farnborough
In 2002, I was working grounds-maintenance at NAS Whidbey Island. My work crewmates and I (civilians all) spent almost two weeks cleaning and mowing the lawns and barking the landscapes in preparation for an airshow being hosted there. On the day before the air show, the company I was working for hosted a long "Thank you!" lunch for us at a picnic spot on-base near the end of one of the runways, and we got to see many of the airplane participants come in.
One of those participants was a F-117 _Nighthawk._ As the stealth fighter came in for landing, it was much higher than I expected, and it did a low pass over the entire runway.
What makes this memory stick for me was not just the opportunity to see the famous _Nighthawk_ (which is a favorite of mine) in the air, but how it _sounded_ as it turned past the runway. I kid you not when I say this, but I _did not_ hear even a whisper from that airplane until _after_ it had passed us; it was _completely silent!_ It was like listening to a sonic boom- you don't hear it until it's parallel to you, and _then_ you hear the roar of it passing by; except in this case the _Nighthawk_ was far below supersonic speeds.
I couldn't believe what I'd just witnessed, and I've never encountered anything like it since!
That's mind-blowing. People have said that the Nighthawk looks ugly because of the weird design (it was made more for function than looks), but I think it's really neat. It tends to make you question how the thing stays airborne ;v;
I was stationed on Okinawa from Aug 74 to Sep 75, at Camp Foster USMC, close to Kadena Air Force Base. I use to watch the SR-71 Blackbird take off, then kick in the afterburners. What a jet.

I've seen many Abbotsford International Airshows with jets over the years, and I got a chance to see the Blackbird in the late 80's. It was, without a doubt, the loudest jet I've ever heard, the meanest, and best looking!
Erick Simonsen : When I was stationed at Shaw AFB I got to see how they got the pilot out of the SR-71, after it landed. They used a crane to lift him out. The guys helping had to wear fire suits, it was so hot, I assumed from the friction of the speed of the aircraft. The pilot wore a space suit, so it didn't affect him.
When I was a young kid, 7 or 8, I saw Blackbird fly over my house here in the UK. There was nobody around to share the thrill with. But a moment I've never forgotten.
I wish i had visited mildenhall more often to see them flying overthere
I'm fascinated by the Blackbird. Not only designed & built in the 1950s / 1960s but before computer aided design, parametric 3d modelling & probably all done in the old-fashioned feet 'n' inches. Incredible!
So is this how the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters pays the bills? By doing air shows?

I worked on these acft at Beale back in 1976-78. Was a single airman so was picked to come in a zero dark thirty to preflt and ride the launch truck. It was so awesome to sit just a hundred feet or so away while it went into full AB for the take off roll. But it was a nightmare for us maintainers as that acft was so difficult to work on. It was retired because it was too costly to maintain. Spare parts were next to impossible to obtain as they only made so many parts and we quickly ran out.
Lucky you ! I still miss this bird big time !
When you can leave L.A. and land in N.Y. in less than an hour, you are smoking it! One hell of a rocket with wings.

Seen them flying over my home in Okinawa out of Kadena AFB. Wow they rattled our windows!!!
I was there for this airshow, it was amazing. It was my last year in the Air Force
This is like refueling speed for this beast. Amazing
I saw the SR-71 at the Oshkosh EAA show many years ago. It had some problem leaving so it was delayed a few days. I live in Berlin which is 20 miles west of Oshkosh and when she finally flew over, there was a sonic boom that caused my windows to actually move in and out enough that I could see them as I was looking out the window at that time. I thought they were going to bust open, but they held.
I was stationed at Beale AFB from 1969 to 1970 and saw these birds take off and fly many times. Heard stories about the early flying days that changed the way they handled these special flights. They found out that a fully fueled bird could not rotate without risking a flame out due to the high angle of attack. The engine air inlets caused turbulence which reduced power and stopped the take off. The remedy was to take off with 30 minutes of fuel so the rotation would be quick and then rush up to refuel. Miss the refueling, return to base. Also, the KC135 booms would wobble when trying to refuel at high speed. At low speed the SR71 would porpoise and make refueling impossible. One time the tanker was struck and the SR lost over Texas. When you see pictures of the refueling boom it has the marking "high speed boom" and distinctive ribs along the boom that act as vortex generators. Visiting aircraft always tried to make it an airshow by throttling up to get everybody's attention. Of course, the SR also did a left engine, right engine, and then both engine run up before pushing it full throttle. The VA issued hearing aids really help now that I've lost most of the high pitch hearing.
The team built each part as they thought it up! Amazing!
What an incredible aircraft. Everything, literally everything about it is fascinating.
It's why I own a sportbike because I couldn't be a pilot but enjoy a good rush sometimes!! Salutes

Planes? Not at all. Gutteral reaction. Ever watched the moon launch - SATURN 5 in IMAX. You could reach out and touch the sides of the rocket as it clears the gantry and then those special speakers cut in and it feels like a MIX MASTER demo going off in your chest. Gettin' teary just remembering.
BEST I ever experienced was at a Toronto CNE airshow. Buddy of mine was asked to be the western marker boat for the BLUE ANGEL's show. We had F-18's going past at 350mp/h BOTH sides and BELOW the height of his mast. Then they go full A/burner and head for the SUN, spray us with lake water and the air concussion felt like 5 or 6 MIX MASTERS going off in your chest. NOTHING comes close!!

Imagine seeing this in person ♥️
Saw it at the airshow in Toronto in the 1980's. It is a sight to behold, and a sound that shakes you at your core.
Never seen an SR-71 in flight myself, as I was born in 2007, but I have been face-to-face with the only SR-71C ever built ;v;
I was there in 1997 and zi watched that plane with 10 power binoculars and as the speck disappeared from my magnified sight, I could still hear the plane for a good 5 minutes or more. Wow, it was awesome!
I got to witness one of these beauties break the sound barrier to watch that cone build up and then break through it was awesome.
How lucky to go to an airshow featuring The SR
Was ground crew early 80s
Airshow was treated as royalty
@@robertpowell2557 how cool!! I never seen an SR. I don't think many have lol
I loved the true story about buzzing the ramp at Sacramento.
Beagle76 and LA speed check one
Wonder how many folks actually had the privilege of seeing this gem in person. Saw a B-2 Spirit fly over the neighborhood returning from a nearby air show. Never will forget…
When I was in the Air Force, I saw it at Offutt Air Force base in 1979, I was 19. It was there for the air show the next day. The one thing I remembered was when it was leaving the next day and was going thru the engine check at the beginning of take off, the start up process and the noise of the engines at full run up and the shaking of the ground. I was in a tower a half mile away, the power of those engines was frightening.
worked on the SR71 at Cadena AFB Okinawa 1972 .incredible aircraft
@ aaaaaack! I were tinkin da same ting! Kadena 79-81
From Kadena AFB, as soon as it lifts its wheels, it goes nearly vertical. When it lands, it goes immediately into a hanger.
I saw several takeoffs and landing while stationed in Japan. One night, about twilight, the SR71 also known as the "habu" in Japan, flew over Camp Hansen where I was stationed, and you could see the lights on the fuselage as it was on approach at Kadena, it was an awesome plane. Leaked a lot on the ground until it got up to speed and the heat caused expansion in the fuselage which stopped the leaking.
Sometimes, during the night, I can still hear this thing pass over at high altitude. Fantastic machine!
Man what a beautiful aircraft I would have loved to have seen this plane in person I probably won’t get the chance but man that must be a real treat to see that even seeing that thing on CZcams is awesome gotta love the sight and sound of afterburners
