I was a Navigational-Aids technician on the SR-71 from 1968 to 1973. The aircraft shown in the video was one of the original two trainers. I worked on this plane many times.
The SR-71 was an odd bird to say the least. On the ground she leaked fuel like a sieve. In the air at speed and altitude she was tighter than an Amish Prom Queen, flew fast as a bullet and mapped most of Russia and China. She was hard to fly, totally defenseless and relied on speed and stealth to stay alive. She found the Russian nukes in Cuba and countless targets world wide. We owe her a debt of gratitude.
Well said good man. I would only add: "...and mapped most of Russia and China WITH COMPLETE IMPUNETY". I wish we could still se her flying at least at some airshows.
theterrible1 well first off they have satellites now. Why send a plane when you can have satellites in orbit, less chance of being shot down, the reds had anti-satellite technology before us, we used an f15.
Rakan Aldusari But there is a possibility they could be using a material with heat conductive properties that can cope with mach 15 that the common populous don't know about?
This aircraft flew so fast that it actually stretched close to 12 inches in flight...when it landed the crew had to remain inside until the skin cooled enough for them to exit....due to the stretching, it was always leaking fluids upon landing...the crew members were the only pilots authorized to wear the NASA orange flight suit due to the altitude in which they operated...they were in the lower levels of outerspace during missions

This thing is a work of beauty. SR-71 Pilot Interview Richard Graham Veteran Tales. this guy answers a lot of your questions regarding this jet. very good video even though it lacks any real footage of the jet.
I remember seeing them take off in Palmdale. What a sight! The airframe was 85% titanium. High temperatures generated during flight required special design and the skin of the inboard wings were corrugated which allowed for expansion during flight. The plane would literally leak fuel on the ground because the joints of the aircraft were not sealed. Skunkworks created a plane ahead of it's time!
The aircraft shown in this video appears to be the SR-71B - one of 3 like this ever built, and the only one to have extensive service (most hours among all Blackbirds). Awesome aircraft. American ingenuity.
Yes, in this video this is a "trainer" with the raised second cockpit, however a regular version SR-71 does have two cockpits as well for the pilot and RSO ( Reconnasance Systems Officer ) who while the pilot flew the missions operated the complex systems such as the radar, navagation, cameras, and others.. Look up BlackBird101 here and find SR-71 Blackbird Launch, this shows both the Pilot and RSO being strapped in, also has some great cockpit audio as well as how they started the engines...
Technology is wonderful
