I think my ideal Hobonichi would be a weeks cousin - a wider weeks with a bigger monthly section and the mega amount of notes pages

  •  Před 10 měsíci +51

Traditionally the year in Japan starts with the spring cleaning on April 1st. It's a very important day and many locations have festivals dedicated to it. So Japanese diaries/agendas often start on April rather than on January. Japan is a country that it's very good at adapting and adopting, so they also know & use European-style calendars with January 1st as first day. Personally I find it useful bc most of my activities start or gather speed in March/April.

@@b.l70 Yeah, it's pretty unique. We have a couple of weeks off in between March and April to end and start the academic year.
In Colombia, we start in the end of January-First week of February and depending on if it's private or public school we would end anywhere between mid-November to First week of December

In australia (and Nz) we finish academic year in dec (how early depends on level) and start at the start of feb. Financial year however is 1 jul-30 Jun. I can’t remember Nz but I think it might be start of June to end May. Nothing lines up so jan start works best for me lol.

The black cover English planner is a collaboration with Japanese lifestyle brand Arts and Science and is informed by their design aesthetic. This is not an only collaboration either, every year’s lineup features several Arts and Science covers.

Hi! I'm wandering around the CZcamss watching all the 20204 Hobonichi videos ^_^ As a Day-Free user, I'm excited to see how you like it! For me, it's the perfect planner for someone who feels pressured by having too many pages to fill out. I alwasy felt like I "failed" at plannering, because I couldn't manage to fill in every day in weekly spreads and the idea of doing DAILY pages was just terrifying. So I had just accepted that I wasn't a "planner person". I ended up being gifted a planner without weekly or daily sections and it changed EVERYTHING because of how I had to approach it. This year I got a Day-Free and it's a perfect combination of monthly planner and free-form journal that you can use for whatever, without the pressure of filling out weekly and daily pages. If I need a weekly spread or daily journal page, I can just create one! Absolutely my forever planner I think.
Thanks for the videos! I'm going through them now and enjoying them

I use the weeks for mealplanning, grocerylists and the finances weekly, monthly and yearly. I use the a6 for functional planning, to do's, list's. The a5 is used by al the familymembers, everyone can/will put there appointments down on paper. The rest is used for commonplacing. Notes 📝 when scribbled during phonecalls and all that kind of stuff. So i'm a enthousiast

When I first heard about Hobonichi I bought all the sizes to try. FOMO is real ya know. Anyway, I absolutely hated the Weeks, could NOT get into it no matter how many times I tried. So about 3-4 years later I tried it again (don’t ask me why) and I absolutely love the layout! I’m still shook over that. I’ve even turned my Sterling Ink Common Planner into that layout since I have the undated version. (Which is why the Common Planner is awesome, but that’s another topic.) Love your videos. This is a very good review and covers all the things so thank you!

I bought two day free because I think I’ll need that space for calendar and notes.
I put them back to back and taped the spines together to make one bigger book that is about the thickness of the Techo. I taped the covers together where they meet too. I plan to work straight through it. But if you want to use it to make one work and personal together but separated I can see that might work too.

I’ve been so excited about the launch! I was able to order everything I wanted EXCEPT the Little Gifts cover, which sold out sooo fast. This was my first time ordering directly from the Hobonichi website, but then I discovered that the US retail partners had everything I was looking for and I could have saved $35 on shipping. Lesson learned. I will say an advantage of the Day Free is that the pages are numbered! I think it’s the only book of theirs that is.

New to your channel. Very helpful content as folks are navigating the delightful madness of hobonichi season, thank you!
2024 will be my 4th year with the A6 Techo planner (the Arts & Sciences collab) which I love for the slightly larger grid size and streamlined page layout. Not a fan of all the colours in the Original which I find distracting rather than helpful. I also love the weekly supplement (I know!! 😂)!! I used to use a Kokuyo Jibun Techo planner but after I got laid off in 2020 that once super useful weekly vertical + project tracking grids, etc. felt ... well, oppressive. So I switched to a format that felt less regimented / more free and open to a wider range of creative uses including journaling and memory keeping. When I began working again as an independent contractor I knew I wanted to add something simple to track work projects and hours. For me, the Weekly supplement is perfect for this use. It was also quite useful as a class scheduler (language classes in my case) as it's very "toss in your handbag/backpack" portable. Plus it is a rather inexpensive item in the hobonichi range, a good "add on" if you're trying to meet a free shipping threshold for example. Personally I give it 4-1/2 stars. 😊

Thanks so much for sharing! My favourite Hobonichi items are the A6 Techo (that binding! Stellar! Also a really nice size if you want a manageable journalling/writing space) and the Stappo pouch (super versatile, holds planners up to B6 size and you can shove a LOT of stickers and ephemera in those pockets! Also great for holding brass clips from Traveler’s Company.) I ordered the Tomitaro Makino items that were new this time round. So curious about the A5 HON in English! I’m currently using the Eiji Mitooka Olive A6 HON as a diary and I still love it! Bought a clear cover, too, because I think I’ll want to keep the A5 HON as lightweight as possible. (The A6 HON fits into covers from other companies, such as a Moterm A6, so I’m assuming the same will be true for the HON in A5.)

An a5 page a day is quite a task to fill and I am not flipping to the yearly index and monthlies and weeklies and days so a whole section of the cousin will be wasted on me. Also, the layout of the Planner has always appealed to me because it's more minimalist (I wasn't a fan of all the colors in the Original), and also because I like being able to read the quotes without having to translate them. But - I am going to try the new Original in English this year, and as soon as I decided to try it I got really excited about it - including the colorful layout. Go figure. It probably has something to do with how my use of the A6 book has shifted over the years. Whatever the reason, I'm now counting down the days until November 1st, LOL.

One more "also," sorry. My frustration with the small size of the weekly supplement led me to consider the new Common Planner...but I didn't like it, oddly, despite it being more minimalist than the Hobonichi Planner. I picked up a discounted Jibun Techo Biz Mini in June and I fell completely in love with it. I like having a more spacious vertical weekly layout, but I also like that it's in a thin, standalone book that is thin, portable, thus easy to carry in my bag every day. I love the Mio paper in the Biz version. It handles fountain pens just fine, but I pretty much only use Mildliners and 0.4mm gel pens in it (Juice Up, Hi-Tec-C Coleto multipens, or Uni-ball One).

Hi Rachelle, really love this video. Thanks for making it so informative. Quick question: I actually like the ideas of the Weekly Supplement because I LOVE the vertical weekly layout over two pages; but the Supplement doesn't have a monthly view. Do you know if Hobonichi has a product that includes a monthly view AND a vertical weekly view? Hobonihi Weeks has the horizontal weekly view, which I don't favor as much. Basically, I am asking if there's such as thing as the Cousin without the daily pages. Perhaps from different company? And I do want the thin Japanese paper, too (Tomoe River or its replacement). B6 or A5 would work for me. Does anyone else know? Thanks in advance.

You might be interested in the Mark's Weekly Planner - it has a monthly view and vertical weekly view. While it's not quite as thin as the Tomoe River (~50gsm) paper, it's still respectable at ~60gsm. Comes in an A5 size and has a zipper pocket on the front, too.

the mega is actually TRIPLE the amount of blank note pages!!!
    69/73 versus 213/217 pages in the JPN(&CHN)/ENG.

Do they (or any other brand) make a planner that is the same full size vertical weekly setup as the cousin but without the daily pages? So like the monthly calendar view and the vertical weekly hours but no daily pages?

They don't, but Sterling Ink does! Her preorders are over, but she will likely have another sale later in the year when she gets the extras in stock. Keep up with her insta or website for info.

Hobonichi doesn’t. Jibun Techo has it for A5 size but the hourly print is too small. I used it for work, just because it doesn’t have dailies which I personally don’t need for work - rather more on activity tracking- monthly + weekly vertical from Monday to Sunday 24 hourly print
