Early pipes like yours have vulcanized rubber stems. When they get old, they turn a unsavory yellow/brown. You can polish it with something like VIM (liquid abbrasive household cleaner) to turn it back to gleaming darkbrown/black. Nice set of kit!

The two white stripes on the socks which you don't comment on were, as with issue gloves, an indication of their size. For example two rings, size 5 - 7, three rings, size 8 -9.

I noticed but I did not know. Of course there had to be a purpose, they weren't going to make the socks more expensive and time consuming to make for nothing! With the Germans, there's always a reason for everything, unfathomable and twisted as if may be...

As the war progressed, I bet the average German soldier could consider himself very lucky if he could keep 20% of what we're seeing here!
If you have the chance, try to visit the Kyiv War Museum in Ukraine - maybe it's wiser to wait first for the war to end - in which you will be able to see all these items in original condition plus many, many more Wehrmacht and Soviet gear. Possibly it will be the very first time you see these items in color! Worth a visit. The Museum is located inside the base of the gigantic "Motherland calls" monument, located close to the river. Outside there is a large display of Tanks, military vehicles and combat aircraft, and a very short distance away there is a dedicated Afghanistan War Museum. You'll be impressed.
