what do you think on this adventure:VADER retired PADDLE boarding on LA RIVER (Narrated by Jones Earl James) - S2E1 The River Wild full"
Frozen, I don’t know if you will ever see this but ever since I was a young boy, I have always wanted to go on a backpacking trip. Life happened and I never perused that dream. After watching your videos over the past 6 months, I have been learning and buying gear. I will now be fulfilling that dream this weekend, hiking a 3 day 2 night on the laurel highlands hiking trail. You have inspired me to peruse this and I can’t thank you enough. I also live outside of Pittsburgh and I hope to one day meet you.
Bryan
Excellent! And I read all my comments!
My Wife's Grand Father worked in the Shawnee Park for close to 25 years. He retired when he was 70. When he was almost 75 we went camping with him. I was only 25 and my wife 21. He walked our butts into the dirt on those trails. LOL We where fit but not as tough as he was. He teased us for years after that. He said that he felt that very late fall or early winter and early spring was when the Park is the prettiest.
Crazy thing.... just found your earbud on the north loop.
Sent you and email...
Thanks for the great video, we appreciate your time and effort to post them!
Haha that's crazy! Thanks for picking it up!
Did full trail over 2 trips. Took 2 day's for each loop. That trail is a BEAST!!!!
Hey Frozen...Just recently started hiking. Never did before, until I watched your AT Journey Thru Hike vid. Truly inspired me. Wife and I now hike a local trail (just 2.5 - 3 miles) 4 to 5 times a week (mainly for exercise) and sometimes do day hikes on weekends. No overnights YET. 😉. I hope to retire within the next couple of yrs or so and have set a goal for myself to do the AT. Your vid was one of the first to spark my interest. Wife says I’m obsessed with it now!! Enjoying watching others’ daily vlogs who are on the AT now, like your buddy Wild. Please keep the videos coming, because you are indeed inspiring people! Thanks!!!
Frozen,
I live in Ohio, thank for visiting our wonderful state! I hunt southern Ohio, glad you got to experience the hills lol, they are no joke! Love your channel. I stumbled across your AT trip. Very humbling! Thanks for sharing all that you do! Keep trailing and God Bless you!
Thanks for watching
The trail has approximately 8,000 ft of gain. Most of the ups are around 400 ft. The first 7.5 miles of trail has 2,000 ft of gain.
Thanks much for the vid. Never heard of a pump sack, and would never have thought of using a pack liner to inflate a sleeping pad. You should seriously consider taking up the bagpipe.
😂
My favorite AT through hiker giving me inspiration for this weekend.
Get ready for a challenging hike!
Pack-It Gourmet meals are killer! We took them exclusively for a week in the BWCA this summer and everyone was impressed. Both by the variety and the excellent flavors.
Live 5 minutes away. Shawnee is awesome!
Nice to see you on my home trail. It is the best up and down training trail in Ohio. Nice job!!
I'm wanting to turkey hunt Shawnee this year. seems promising
My buddy and I just returned from Shawnee State Forest. We were looking for someplace challenging and your video inspired us to give it a try. We only did the north loop but it was a blast. Lots of ups and downs...any many dry creek beds. Thanks for motivating us to get out there.
Frozen I really love your videos, especially this one with bolognese meal. LOL Great seeing you back on a hike. Bummer getting a rainy day but the trail takes away sometimes. Hope all is well. God Bless
For sure! The hike out was my most relaxed time out there. I enjoyed day 3 a lot.
Awesome to see you out in the woods Jason!! Best wishes to you and family!
Enjoyed it as always! Thanks for sharing!
Show the mud footage please. This year we need all the trail footage we can get. Stay safe and keep on hiking.
Great to see another video from you again. Always liked your videos. I followed you thru the AT and now look forward to your videos when they come out. Keep on hiking. I'm a bit of a section hiker. Usually once a year for a week or two. Thanks for sharing.
Go ahead and release your West Virginia video. You now got me curious! My new Sawyer Squeeze is a dream come true after using the old one for so long. That was nasty inside your tent with the rain and condensation.
It's wonderful how fast a new squeeze is lol
Great to see you out there Frozen! I hope our trails cross some day. You have been an inspiration to my wife and I. Looking forward to more, especially the PCT if that works out!
YES! Did this hike in early April this year, Found it to be allot of work for little reward, a roller coaster of a trail. Hiked it counter clockwise.
Were there views that justified it, or anything like that? It didn’t look like it by Frozen’s footage.
No views until fall really. Water features are nice at the southern end. But there are better places.
Thanks Frozen, we’re going Friday and I was nervous about the inclines. Thanks for giving us a point of reference. We’re doing the south loop with a day hike through the wilderness side trail. Thanks for keeping me motivated can’t wait!!
Hi Jason I have been wanting to see a video from you. Very interesting trail nice to see you back out again.
Good to see you back out!!
Great to see ya shouldering a pack again!! I too have very recently gone back to ground! I like it a lot! Tarped it the 2 nights my buddy and I were stealthin on the long trail and I absolutely loved it! I’m old so of course I was right at home on my original ridge rest pad. 😁 Hey, i would definitely like a video on how you make those stoves. Thanks again Jason!!
Hi Frozen, good to see you back on the trails👍 we missed you buddy🌟👍stay safe , be well!
I have always admired your strong, positive attitude even when things are less than ideal. Love your vids.
Binge watching your AT thru hike and planning my section hike of the PA AT next Spring. I've never backpacker before and I'm learning lots from you!
Damn Frozen, I always enjoy your videos. Glad to see you still posting high quality videos!
I meant to watch this weeks ago. Good stuff Jason. Thank you sir for a generous upload!
One of these days I'm going there in Autumn. Let me know if you head back to see the foliage.
Shawnee, as you experienced, is hot in summer.
Shawnee seems a lot like the Knobstone Trail (AKA: Little AT) here in Southern Indiana. Straight up... straight down repeat 1 million times! Good job thank you for taking us along.
Did Knobstone a couple years back. Was not a fun time. Definitely FU hills. The worst part was all the spiderwebs. Had to walk shaking my trekking pole up and down to clear the trail. Plan to do Shawnee next month. Looking forward to being out in the woods again.
The spiderwebs are awful! The trail gets used a lot but I guess the spiders are working even harder Lol. Good luck at Shawnee!
Glad to see you back out and about
Pretty awesome to see a black snake out in the middle of nowhere
And yes I would like to see how you make one of those stoves and the pricing for the carbon felt
And yes why not just add the video to go along with the pot cozy
And I wish you much luck with specific Crest trail
Nice to see you back out on the trail... joining us solo weekend warriors 😂 I followed you on the AT the whole way it was epic.... that’s a bummer that the tent leaked .. that’s an expensive tent you’d think they would put a dab of seam sealer on those stitched pads specially at that taut point at the top . Another summer pad you might consider is the Rikki Tikki pad from amazon ( stupid name I know) cheaper, lighter and quieter than the tensor it is one of the most comfortable pads I’ve ever used... again great to see you back on the trail .... 👍👍
Nice 3 day trip. With no notable views it looked like a great section of forest to walk through. I like your trick with the sleeping pad. I have always just used the pump sack but this is great for cutting out an extra item.
Haven't finished the video but I don't want to forget... I wouldn't mind seeing the footage from your previous trip. It's great to see you back on the trails again. Might be back for more comments once I finish video. 😀
Watching uour videos inspired me to start hiking in April of this year. That slowly transformed into section hiking the Ice Age Trail here in WI. Show the video of the footage from the trip and how to make our own alcohol stoves!
First time viewing your video. I'm going to have to add you to my watch list. Really enjoyed watching.
Frozen, thanks for the content. Your channel has helped a great deal getting into backpacking here in WPA.
I just completed my first section hike of the NCT, Henry’s Mills to Kelletville. Roughly 30 miles and three nights. I’m not sure if thru hiking will ever be my “thing” but it sure is nice to only have to think about putting one foot after the other.
Have really enjoyed all your videos. Best backpacking channel I have found! Would love to see the pot koozie and stove tutorial. Getting ready for some week long trips in Utah next year and would love to try them out.
Nice! Thanks for the info! I've got a trip planned on this trail over Halloween weekend.
I've been watching your videos and I love your content. Planning some longer hikes this year. You got a new sub my dude! Keep up the great work!
Joe
Lets gooooooooooooo Frozen your videos are truely the best!
Thanks brother!
I really cant wait to get out and doing stuff like this in the spring! i dont have any money to get going any time soon, times are tough. but the channel has got me out and about checking out a bunch of little day hikes around pa!
That bag works great for blowing up the mat. I love my Nemo pad. Hope all is well
Welcome back to the great outdoors...
So glad you liked the Nemo!
Frozen, great to see you on the trail again!
Love you adventures and can't wait for the pct good luck
HI !
YES THAT WOULD BE NICE AGAIN SEEING HOW YOU MADE THEM BOTH !
It is nice to see you out on trips and making videos again. One thing to consider on your conversion to becoming a ground dweller is you don't have to give up your hammock. Switch out the underquilt with your sleeping pad. Now you can use your hammock/tarp/sleeping pad as a hybrid system. It is not ideal, but it works. Sleep on the ground if there are no trees, or hang if you can't find a level spot to sleep on the ground. I pretty much use my tarps exclusively, which I really like because they are waterproof and I feel more connected to the outside than being in a stinkin, leakin, tent.
Watching that felt all nostalgic. Really missed watching all the thru hikes this year!
Thanks Wyld!
Shawnee State Forest is a great area. Thanks for sharing your trip.
I did the loop last October. It was a great challenge. I thought I would have hill PTSD but it turns out, its sort of like having a baby... Traumatic at the time, but you eventually forget about it. I'd like to see your footage. I was supposed to be in Rothrock State forest that weekend but because of the hurricane it was thunderstorms, hail and significant downpours. Because we were going to be exposed on the ridge a fair portion we bailed. Great to see a video from you!
Wow good job Frozen! Congrats on good health
Yes. Show the thought process of deciding to end early/turn around. Less experienced hikers can learn from that. Great video.
Beautiful..plan on this trail soon..thank you
Yes , would like to see a video how to do a fancy feast cat can stove , dont know where to get the proper felt for one , enjoy the video alot man , glad to see u getting out , been getting out alot also. Been hitting the Shenandoah national park a bunch
nice to be in the woods with you.. awesome pond around 24 in in and what a weird snake on the trail wow.. sucks the tent was leaking but you sure make the best of the weather on your way out... looks like a tough enough hike, thanks for taking us with you
After testing at my house I think it's just a lot of condensation.
@@FrozensAdventures good to hear/ at least it was running down the sides too, not dripping on you
Yea it definitely did the job with the design but my quilt was soaked!
I have not seen this pump sack hack, nice one!! 👍👍
⏰
You make great video! Trying out a tent, nice! Thanks for sharing.
The nemo tensor is amazing!
The pack liner pump sack trick is great, thanks for sharing that!
You bet!
“That’s actually splashin on me!” 🤣 That inside the tent bit was hilarious!! I thought i was watchin an episode of cops!
Red blue red blue!
Thanks for the tip on inflating the sleeping pad. I have a Big Agnes Q Core SLX that I just blow up by mouth. This will save me some time and effort. Another great video. Keep them coming.
Thanks! Got a lot of good feedback from the pack liner thing. Didn't realize so many people didn't think of it lol. I used to do it my first year of backpacking before I went to a hammock.
Frozen, I am 57 years old and love the wilderness. I have become obsessed with your hikes. You have inspired me to start planning my 2022 spring, summer and fall. I am currently shopping for the necessities. I am working on conditioning myself both physically and mentally. I'm stoked!! You do a great job. Your stories are interesting and informative. I live in West Virginia and my immediate goal is to start off with some DAY hikes, overnight hikes and then the 3 night 4 day hikes in the Mon Forest. I've watched EVERY episode. Thanks for all the 411 and perspective. Your personality fits. Too many others are beyond ANNOYING to me!! See you on the trails!!!
Thanks! I find myself being very turned off watching a lot of other hikers as well, too much focus on fake drama and bad advice.
Glad to have you here at Shawnee... I live 10 miles away and was hiking at Red River Gorge. Shawnee lacks the popularity because it lacks views but you’re right, October is awesome here !
Do you see many hunters in Oct or November? Or any deer sign at shawnee
@@johndenver5029 Yes , there’s quite a bit at that time.
Like the nylofume pump bag trick! Thanks!
WAS THAT AN EASTERN NEWT ! GLAD YOU HAD A CHANCE TO GET AWAY / OUT ! HOPEFULLY ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO THE TENT IS TREAT IT SO TI DOESN'T LEAK FOR YOU AGAIN ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS NEAR & FAR ! SEEMS LIKE ALL THE STRETCHING ETC IS HELPING YOU WITH YOUR LEGS & FEET AGAIN ! ENJOYED ! THANK YOU !
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Its fun seeing someone do a trail I'm at a couple times a year. The wilderness section is also a fun part to tack on, and actually the connector trail (ie what you'd use if you only did the north, or only did the south loops) has some fun parts. I'm surprised you had such big condensation issues at camp 5 as well, that usually the one condensation free camp there, at least for me.
Hell yeah we wanna see it.
Good to see ya buddy 👍
I just got the tensor too and was questioning the need for the pump sack. Nice little hack Frozen. I'll be using that during my SMokies SOBO in Novemberrrr
Yes, please, to videos of the WV mud and alcohol stove!
Just by gazing at the trees around makes me happy 😘😍🥰
I'm from wv also so anything wv I'm all for. Watching you use a tent while I'm hanging in the chameleon lol
Thank you for the video
Another great video! Show us some mud slingin'!
Despite the rain it still looked like a good and fun trip. Honestly your pack liner idea looks like it fills the pad faster then a pump sack. For chafing issues I've had good luck using "fresh balls". It's a lotion that dries as a powder.
Haha I'll have to try some fresh balls!
Dude, Shawnee is so good. And yes, it is the hardest in Ohio. Beautiful but rocky as fuck and nothing but ups and downs the whole way. Thanks for covering this place, good vid man.
I hiked the south loop back in '04 with my 4-h group. I remember that lake.
Thank you frozen
If I was going to take somebody new to hiking whom I didn’t like, this is where I would take them. Shawnee is a ball buster. Rainy, hot, and humid it seems regardless spring, summer and fall. Plus they cut the trails with Bobcats sometimes leaving a trail strewn with ankle twisting rocks. Little to no switchbacks and poor trail routing as far as ups and downs go.
All that being said, if you’re a true backpacker, the misery of Shawnee holds a special place in your hiking heart. Lol
My thoughts exactly.
I’m from wv and just getting into backpacking, that footage of the 7 mile out and back could be beneficial to me
There is also a nice beginner backpacking options at lake Vesuvius near Ironton. It’s a bit closer to WVA
Shawnee has a shorter Day Hike trail too.
Great video thank you !
It looked like you were packing up to leave in the middle of the night at first. I'm hitting the BFT next week. Did the CL50 2 weeks ago. Got my system dialed in pretty good now.
Loved the CL50. BFT hates me
Yes it was pretty early lol
Wow. You’re a fast hiker. I don’t think I even walk that fast on a sidewalk! 😂
I'm actually the slowest one compared to my hiking friends!
Love hiking in the hills and mountains of KY, TN, AL, etc, but water is always a concern. No water on the ridge...
Zaleski Backpacking Trail near Lake Hope. Very challenging!
Those meals looked pretty good. A little steep on their price at $10-12/meal but sometimes you just gotta splurge. I'm in Ohio and never been to this area so I'll have to check it out and do a weekend trip. Thanks for sharing.
For sure ! I had them from the AT their hike and they are past their best by date.
I’ve been hoping for an honest review of Shawnee. I have a week off in October and was undecided between Shawnee and Red River Gorge. Think I’ll stick with the gorge. I’m anxious to try out my Nemo Hornet 2P tent and NeoAir XLite pad for the first time. Glad you’re back!
Red river gorge for sure a billion %
Outdoor Adventures Haha! Can’t go wrong there.
When I first started backpacking some 15 years ago, Shawnee was my first multi-day. It nearly killed me! I don’t recommend it for a novice, but it sure is pretty.
welcome back...glad u like nemo tensor love mine.. thanks for the video
I just live a few miles down the road from there. Wish I would have known we could have linked up!
Great vid man! Tent prob is a bummer. You still using a lightheart gear rain jacket? I was recently in Harpers Ferry and was looking in gear shops for one with no luck.
Outdoor research helium 2. It's time to find something new.
A “how to” stove video would be great.
I see you have new camera. Yess
Yes show the mud fest. I liked this video a lot. I like to see the nuts bolts stuff while your in camp. I have a question about the two pocket attachments one on each of your shoulder straps that you have. Looks like you have your phone in your left pocket. Thanks.
Yup they come as options on LiteAF packs. I'm sure there are aftermarket products out there as well.
Looks like a nice hike and good prep for the PCT. It’s really strange seeing you set up a tent 😅
Oh trust me. It's just as weird for me lol
I need some back story, are you mainly a day hiker?
Brian_Hikes_All_Day last year he hiked the Appalachian Trails in 131 days, now he’s just sharing his day to day hiking adventures in preparation for the pacific crest trail.
I've been in a hammock for 5 years. Then thru hiked the AT. Now figuring out my tent setup for the pct.
Outdoor Adventures why are you switching to tent ?
