- Last summer, Joe "Stringbean" McConaughy attempted to set a new Fastest Known Time on the Long Trail in Vermont. To set a new overall FKT, Stringbean would need to hike the 272-mile trail in under 4 days and 12 hours. Joe had already attempted to FKT the Long Trail in 2015, but found himself underprepared. Five years later, the trail would prove just as difficult, as things would get dark in more ways than one.

Y'all are fueling my addiction for ultrarunning films. Thanks so much for this - what an incredible film and inspiring dude.
Happy to help Mark, thank you for the kind words!
This guy joe is such a beast! Love seeing content about him.
Hope to have more soon!
Congrats to Joe and his team - another ridiculous effort!! Thanks for putting this film together (and the rest of the vids). They're huge inspiration.
Thanks for watching Greg!
Truly awe inspiring. You athletes who use your incredible abilities for the betterment of others puts you in a class by yourselves. Thank you so very much for all you do and for sharing your story.
This is great! Great job storytelling, editing, and of course with your run!
Thank you Rory, we appreciate that!
Absolutely amazing! Well done!
Thank you for watching Chad!
Inspirational man, very impressive! It's really hard to grasp just how difficult that trail is from video.
Loving the pure delirium! You are truly pushing yourself to the limits every time! I enjoy watching your FKTs. Especially the AZT, but I have a bias.
The AZT is pretty great...
Dude...I am in awe of your accomplishment...that is f'ing insane!! Thanks for sharing, now my ass has no excuse to tap out when I end-to-end the LT this year. Thanks for sharing, stay blessed, happy hiking!
Fantastic, great stuff, thanks for sharing, VT is beautiful
It really is!
Another great video. It brought me right back to doing the FKT on the Centennial Trail in SD. Much shorter effort but I felt a lot of the same things in my journey. Thanks for sharing. I followed the AZT videos and can’t wait to see what you guys put together there.
Thanks Lance! Now that this one is finished we can really get started on piecing a proper doc together for the AZT. Do you have that Centennial Trail FKT documented anywhere? Would love to check it out
You are awesome, Joe! Way to go

You can also get to the videos by searching my name on the FKT site. I have a few others on there as well. I just watched them again and those FKTs bring back some pretty strong emotions! I am glad you documented for Joe so others can get just a little taste of what it takes. I just started doing this stuff last year. I’m a newbie.
Hell yeah brother.great video
Thanks Ryan!
Great !! Bravo!!
Thanks Danilo!
My hero!
Great recount of another Joe special. Thanks PF 🔥
Has Joe ever documented his gear for the unsupported route? Keen to hear about weight & stuff!
Thanks Aaron! I don’t think he’s done so on video but he does talk about it in his blog here: thestringbean.co/long-trail-gear-list-and-review/
@@pilotfield Thanks for this 🙌
I'm binging on your videos. Great fun and great inspiration. Have you been inspired to enter the Barkley Marathons? I think you would do well there (ie, finish in one piece).
Little curious why everyone at the end had such a such a.....subpar? reaction to his finish. Did Kate say to put him down? Just a bit of an awkward energy that didn't fit nor was deserving of his effort. But blah blah blah, Joe rules and PF did a bang up job of putting this lil micro doc together. One last thing I'd like to add is this lil doc showcases how difficult the terrain in the northeast is. If Joe wants a challenge, there are tons of them to do in the Whites of NH.
I wanna try a sub 10 day, but I’m an old ultra guy.
Took me 21 days hiking last time, much better shape now tho😂
This trail makes you SUFFER!!
Well done!!
great movie :) just a small note - Jeff Gramires FKT is Unsupported, not Self supported
Thanks for the note Kaare, I will make sure that edit is made in any future versions of the film. Thanks for watching!
Congrats man. Did you sleep outside? How much of the trail is runable?
Awesome! Impressive running and fun film. Sub’d for more.
drinkin a heady topper @12:45 good for you bud!
How are you filming this? I can’t figure out what/how you’re carrying in your right hand.
Joe used a GoPro Max (360 camera) that he rigged to the top of his trekking pole
Does anyone know his pace for running?
What is he holding? Guessing some kind of camera mount. Can’t wrap my head around it.
He has a GoPro mount stuck to the top of his trekking pole with a 360 GoPro attached. You can see the top of his trekking pole in a few shots. It was a weight saving idea to use that rather than the pole GoPro designed for it
From wich planet are you from ?
Congratulations from France.
Jeff garmire? That’s a legendary fuck up boys.
no one can do 68 miles per day
I did it 1 minute faster bawhaha
Good running! Great effort!! But sad to hear you take the name of the One God who loves you most in vain as a curse word.🙁
Who cares about how fast you went???
