"You get hit, you don't die."

Notice how the SUV hits the pedestrian dummy fairly high on the body, throwing him out in front (possibly to get run over by the SUV). A sedan would hit the pedestrian lower down in the legs, sending the pedestrian over the top rather than out front. This is one reason why trucks and SUVs tend to be deadlier for pedestrians than cars, and gives the engineers more of a challenge to reduce the damage they do. Of course, if the vehicle is speeding too fast, any design will be deadly.

Yes, and hoods have only been getting taller and higher, making them more dangerous. Plus large pickup trucks make up a startling amount of new car sales. You ain’t rolling over those

Ford F-350 is your safest bet if you want to do the most damage, large/heavy truck with fairly fast acceleration and a high bumper. You could put a heavy duty brush guard on the front of the truck to cause even more damage but make sure the truck doesn’t have AEB because that will render it basically useless… you know, theoretically

Harvard magazine did an extensive article in 2003 on death by road crash of road side users, animal drawn carts, pedestrian and cyclists world wide.
It was figured out to be the equivalent of eleven 747's crashing every single day all year with no survivors. In the neighborhood of 20 million a year
More people die yearly from road crashes than disease and war combined. The hardest hit are third world countries with little or no emergency medical response or modern medical facilities.

I do agree that most people spend more money to save themselves and family inside, but protecting people on the outside is good too. If you do less to someone outside of the car means you will get sued for less if you do get sued.

@PedAdvocate bumper air bags could help. They could be triggered by distance sensors on the front. Maybe they could be made strong enough to cushion accidental hits while parking too without even scratching paint. It could cost more than they are willing to spend but it wouldn't need to be as reliable as normal airbags since faulty deployment of a bumper bag shouldn't hurt anyone and lack of deployment would be no more harmful than current bumpers.

A friend of mine got bumped by an idiot turning right at a red light... checked the left but not the right. When we were crossing the road the van bumped my friend, then me since I was right beside him. So glad the van wasn't going fast lol. The driver and passenger looked horrified as I screamed and they hit the brakes.

@IARRCSim you'd have to make them deploy with enough margin to avoid literally shooting the pedestrian away from the car, but without making the pedestrian touch the car. I don't think it's feasible: at speed even a soft bag will hurt you and making them deploy at the right time would be hard.
