Master duel is still one of the best ways to play for people who dont want to buy expensive decks, have to travel to physical locations, or interact with people in ways we dont necessarily want to.
They definitely missed the mark though with how dry the game is and the overall lack of content. The game hasnt received any new modes in months now, is still extremely far behind in cards, and we are still missing the anime duels after gx.
The most interesting thing to happen recently was Konami playing plague inc with the player base in real time

Hot take here, but Master Duel being behind in term of cardpool is something that make the game more interesting. We have the time to judge the potential of the new card before pulling, and not having the same format from the tcg is better (no direct concurrence between the two for example). And latelly, the fact that they changed the order of the card release more and more combined with the different approch on the banlist help to create fresh new format that we never had in TCG

    • @Matthew-he6id
      @Matthew-he6id Před 5 měsíci +16

@@Animexdraco my issue with MD being behind stems from how quickly certain decks were hit or pre hit due to how things went in the tcg/ocg. It causes a weird divide when new cards or archetypes are released. On one side you have players that have never played irl that want to enjoy the crazy OP stuff. Then the other side is a mix of tcg/ocg players that are sick of it already because they've already lived through it.
At least if we were caught up to the tcg it wouldn't be quite as bad. Although there's still the ocg. It would be easier and the cards would feel more fresh if all 3 weren't as staggered as they are. Even within just the tcg and ocg

Konami didnt have the idea that master duel would blow up so much(wierd what happens when u dont interact with the fanbase). In an interview they said that they pitched the idea of solo modes like 3 months before release. Now its a bit hard for the devs to convince the higherups that they should make a timewizard or N/R ladder considering that most of the old cards are low rarity. Casual Mode being in the game from the beginning wouldnt have helped with the divide between players who have and havent kept up with the game because you still see some people bring meta decks into that shit
Also I dont think it's entirely fair to criticize him for bringing up the bug. It's an old discussion, but an inevitable one when so much of the game revolves around it.

The argument isn’t that a goat mode wouldn’t end up being min-maxed and metagamed. Every online game has this issue.
A newer player can load in with Blue-Eyes turbo and win in low ranks when they draw well, but get repeatedly clapped by Chaos Control once they climb to higher divisions. This isn’t too different than an FPS player shooting on-sight with a “machine gun go brrr” loadout and getting beat by tactical players with weapons picked to complement their playstyle, or a first-time sports sim player using their highest-rated players and getting beat by pros who understand the values of individual stats/team synergies. The thing is, the jump from complete beginner to somewhat knowledgable player in all these scenarios is fairly small - the mechanics are the same, but you’re just using a more optimised set of tools.
The game starts you off with a starter deck where your opening hand probably culminates in summoning Lord of D and setting two backrow. Give new players a goat-legal version of that deck, and that opening turn isn’t too distinguishable from somebody using a full-power Chaos deck. After the new player sees the opponent playing easy-to-understand cards that are clearly more powerful than theirs, they’ll probably go online and build something similar - over time, they will probably get to grips with how certain cards interact with each other and how to play around things like battle traps.
Compare this to the current game, where you could feasibly queue against a player who turns a single Loci into a 6-interrupt board. How is a new player meant to comprehend why the vanilla monster they summoned just sits on field waiting to be attacked, whilst the opponent’s vanilla turned into a 5-minute combo?
There’s a monumental jump from learning “mystic tomato is good because it walls out attacks before floating into a more useful monster you can use on your turn, and has a good attribute for the powerful chaos monsters that many decks want to play” to “you should use ash blossom to prevent powerful search effects like Ecclesia, Hugin or Aleister - but don’t even think about using it on Aluber or Ariana, since those decks have higher-value Ash targets that you haven’t had a chance to read or comprehend yet”. A new player can understand the former fairly quickly, but it takes months to get a basic grasp on how to evaluate the impact of your game-determinative disruptions.

Honestly casual mode in the way it was implemented is more a deck testing mode than a place for new players
You'll see attempts at making the most toxic decks ever imagined half of the time and people testing a meta deck to learn how to use it the other half of the time
If you're new you'll have a worse time in casual than in the low ranks which is quite an oversight from konami

The answer is an obvious "Yeah, of course it wasted its potential." I don't think anyone is going to defend Master Duel when it royally screwed up with its release and content cycle within these two years.
I think the more interesting question is even if Konami makes all the necessary changes, will that be enough to gather new players to come back and give Master Duel a second shot? Because the cynical point of view is that they already missed the hype train when it comes to Master Duel, and the people who played it at launch usually already have a negative reception when it comes to the game.

Having some experiences with roguelikes and their popularity I will say that complexity isn't necessarily the issue but the method by which it gets introduced. Deckbuilders tend to give you the simple stuff out the gate and let you move to more complicated mechanics not only when you have unlocked them by progressing with more simple mechanics so you know the general flow of the game but also when you're comfortable with playing more complicated stuff because it doesn't force you to use specific meta strategies. More than basic UI issues or the specific meta of the game or events the retention issue is tied to it being a game with 25 years of power creep and meta development that you have to take in all at once.
A 1P campaign that has an incentive to play through it and that drip feeds you decks that steadily increase in power and complexity is what most of the games in Yugioh's most popular era (DM through 5D's) offered. I don't really think that's just a coincidence, a lot of people learned to play through the video games. I think that among people who aren't currently playing the game you'd have more people who remember playing something like Eternal Duelist Soul or Nightmare Troubador than who specifically remember Goat format.

Two big things that would greatly help out master duel involves making casual its own format that counts towards daily mission and finally letting us dismantle legacy cards. It gives more variety and reason for players to actually go into causal unlike how it is now and for legacy packs, this would give further encouragement for people to play events more as many players just stop once you get all the gems since legacy pack tickets are practically worthless given you aren't trying to play stuff like ojamas since being unable to dismantle just makes you question why bother.

I remember after release during the very first data mining of the game that was leaked, people found assets for a Classic mode for the game. I was convinced that they just needed a bit more time but that they would probably put it out by the end of the month to save everyone from that terrible format. And then a month passed, a few months, a year, two years. I don't know if they were actually planning on making it a proper game mode like casual, but now it feels like there's no point in even hoping they will make it anymore.
It would probably help get more people to come back to the game, which is something they clearly care about since they're running the returning and new player promotion campaign. But they still refuse to do it. And it should be simple all they really need to do is put another forbidden limited list like the ones they already have listed for the previous events. Like Farfa said, the vast majority of people only care about the card pool. An extremely small minority would complain about no priority or whatever.
I imagine it's just because some corporate goon rejected the proposal thinking that it would take away sales in the long term without understanding that so many potential customers left as a result of not making a more casual format available.

On the one hand, like, the launch of Master Duel truly was insane. I had friends who hadn't talked to me about YGO since high school suddenly mentioning it on my feed. It caused a resurgence of interest and nostalgia for the brand I hadn't seen in well over a decade. Master Duel definitely shot itself in the foot by launching and then taking months to start doing anything.
But, on the other hand... there was no way they were ever going to KEEP that avalanche of new interest. Yugioh simply isn't the same game all those nostalgic visitors remembered, and the game that it is now simply wasn't ever going to appeal to the majority of casual card game players. So while Konami bungled the launch, I'd say Master Duel still more or less ended up filling the same niche for the same audience it was always going to end up having.

I can definitely agree with the things Farfa has said here now as opposed to when MD actually did come out I only knew about Synchro summoning from playing 2009 WC so I knew nothing about the TCG and it's stuff. The only thing I was confused on from the guy in the vid was him talking about not showing off cards in the next upcoming sets when they kind of do that anyways which is also a few people's complaints because they announce it decently early apparently.
I definitely can also agree with that they very well can still add extra game modes that could bring more of the player base back in but that could also depend on the best way to implement it on their part too so only one can hope. The Solo Mode stuff is something I at least liked since I never played most of these archetypes and even tho they are past meta most of these are kinda fun testing them out. Also the Solo Mode only has the problem of giving you the general jist of each thing and not fully showing off exactly everything and is more left for the player to try and do that themselves but it did help me understand the damage step a fair bit better than I ever did previously.
This game definitely didn't 'fail' at all, it just has things it could still accomplish but haven't while other things currently in the game need some adressment to try and make it better. (I.E. Maxx C getting banned but until that gets an understandment in the OCG I don't think that's happening and anyone who acts like Maxx C being legal is some type of godforsaken sin just needs to understand that Japan is what is holding it down and it relies on Konami itself realizing the cards problem to fix it in MD. Then there's also just fitting a banlist for a Bo1 experience which they have been slowly getting to but just not appropriate enough.) And so hopefully someday they'll incorporate more things that a variety of people will like to refresh their player base for the game.

Biggest issue with a Goat or Edison ladder is that there is an upper limit to how many cards you will ever have to craft to play those modes. Konami will eventually stop making money on those players, which is probably the biggest reason they haven't implemented anything permanent.

I think the way they should have made it, is that to unlock ranked, you have to play through previous formats, and keep unlocking them chronologically by winning a certain amount of games, and also the card pool would grow with each format, like for example, when you start your account, you would only have goat format to play against other players, and in order to unlock the next format, let's say edison for example, you have to win 10 games in goat, and you keep doing this format after format until you reach modern, and that's when the true ranked system opens, and they should also keep those old formats for people to go back and play anytime, cause current players are asking for that feature anyways, i know it's going to suck for experienced players to have to go through all that just to open a new account, but since they are already invested in the game, it's very unlikely they will abandon the game because of this, in fact they will like it as a cool small trip on memory lane

As a relative beginner (I played Duel Links and love card games in general), I do think Maxx 'C' presents a unique problem for beginners. I do think it is less important, but it is the one that gets me.
Beginners won't simply play a lot before liking the game, so URs are limited. Right away I am told URs are the most essential resource and I have to spend them on 2 Ash and 2 Maxx 'C' and a Called By. That is 150 URs gone before I can start building anything.
If you add the UR cost of 'fan-favorite' decks, suddenly I have to pay for the game, before I even know if I like it. Sincerely, rather play duel links where at least any staple does it. Whatever staple is in the pack I'll pull my favorite deck is at least usable, so I don't really need to worry about it. (Not to mention the 'solo mode' is more relevant)
I do realize Master Duel is quite generous and if I actually play I will get back easily these URs. But how am I supposed to play a lot, considering all the other issues and the fact that I can't even test multiple decks?
Also, competitive is the only level in which this game seems fun. So even if the other problems are somehow fixed, as soon as that happens, Maxx 'C' becomes a problem. Which should be read as: Players who survive the other difficulties will still quit because of this. Y'all coping if you think any competitive player from any other game will be alright with a meta defining, instant 3-of in every deck, being permanently in the game.

Master Duel Could have absolutely been a Master Piece Yu-Gi-oH game. Several simple things hold it back. One: just make ranked best of 3. It really sucks to lose to decks, you shouldnt lose to. Like gimmick decks. Simply because they went first and you dont have a game 2 to side in counters. To add on to that, you could actually make a legit ranked player ladder. It would make the game feel much more competitive. Two: Just make the card list the same as the TCG, and OCG. You could still separate players, based on region. This would be amazing because then, actual card players could use the game and find value in it as well. It would be a great way to play test. It would also be good imo for non card players because they can feel like they are playing the real game and keeping up with it, and not feel alienated in their own separate format. 3rd: and this is just optional but setup actual tournaments for players. They can be setup by region, and on certain days.

So the reason why the game is missing features and modes people want and/or expected is because they're only now getting around to it, they've literally been bringing the game to the state it was intended to be released in for the past 2-3 years.

I think the solo mode should be improved upon with better explanations of archetype mechanics in the tutorial sections and include more of the popular decks. Legacy formats would be really cool since they already have a feature in the game that shows different formats in the deck builder. Lastly, the largest demographic playing MD is the generation that watch the OG show. They need to put out loaners for the popular archetypes featured on the new show that children today watch.

Konami literally doesn't get it that's the problem. The playerbase is already split in general. You have tons of players who basically don't play the ranked ladder at all anymore and only log on for event duels and solo mode releases. I face more bots/selftks on the way to platinum than I ever did before.
Creating Edison/ GOAT ladder for us who wanna go back in time is good for their overall player population. It would also make multiple youtubers/streamers come back to make content and would even boost sales. They're missing out on a huge market in my opinion.

It's criminal how much MD does not teaches new players about the modern game. And there is no indication of sorts (generally) of what you did wrong in a game to even learn.
They should have kept new players playing against only other new players with loaner decks or starter decks or something. I had to look up, watched so many CZcams videos from a bunch of YugiTubers just to get a generally understanding of the game and how to play my own deck (which as DM at the time).
Also, the fact that there are no fun/alternative game modes is just plain ridiculous. Many events are not it in my opinion. It's just a "No Maxx 'C'" sometimes that limits the deck I want to play or even have.

  • @Innocence7171
    @Innocence7171 Před 4 měsíci

This topic strikes close to my heart since my friends are tired of having me ramble about Master Duel's wasted potential. Having playing the big 3 TCGs and their respective Official Online Simulators, MD is the one with the better engine for what it should do, the slickest, fastest and most curated - surely in part due to the fact that it took Konami until 2022 to release an Official Simulator, while Pokemon and MTG were way ahead. My main gripe with MD starts with It being a separate format from both TCG and OCG - I understand the difficulty of "unifying" both the formats for a game that targets both the Western and Eastern audience, but having a third separate format, with a wildly different and arbitrary card pool and it being the only format you can play in the only official Konami simulator puts MD in the position of being "it's own game" while people who would want to test TCG or OCG formats can't and have to resort to DB or Omega. Again, I understand the fear of splitting your player base, but this situation is unsustainable I think - or better put - Konami is content with MD being this, being out for 2 whole years and having received scarce general updates regarding new systems, formats and so on, and have no incentive to further develop it, due to the player base being stable and players still striving for an automated official simulator. MD could, because it has the ability and the engine to, become a Hub/Client for time wizard formats (First and foremost, while now you can't even access some cards for Edison or GOAT to play with friends in restricted Duel rooms, much less official event) which Konami are heavily pushing in IRL and Paper - have draft modes for various Battle Packs that resemble IRL draft formats - more inspired events - solo modes following the iconic stories and duels of the Anime, and not some copy and paste, badly translated and incoherent ramblings about archetypes (which would be fire if fine better) - a fucking tournament mode with official tournaments promoted regularly by Konami itself.
I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh for the last 15 years, i went through the phases of Dueling Network and YGOpro, of playing the console games, and Konami finally struck gold with such a polished engine as MD is - but to me, currently, it is just an empty shell; surely pretty and well presented, but empty. Konami has in some way the advantage of being "late": they can take the experience of MTG Arena and the now defunct PTCG Online, and others simulators alike, so see what works, what worked but does not anymore, what are the trends.

Modern Yugioh is just a hard game to learn and keep up with. I played MD religiously up until Adventure era and achieved max rank with Salad. I honestly just got bored and was tired of always learning the new cards. Some kind of rebooted card game like Rush Duel is honestly the answer for reaching a new audience. A sudo reboot of the classic show would also do some good, kinda like how Digimon did it. Remake the most popular and recognizable show, and launch a revamped and simpler version of the card game that can run parallel to the existing classic/advanced one. Legit, using nostalgia to boost the launch of a new and easier card game sounds like it would work. Imagine big streamers playing it for the nostalgia and actually being able to get their friends to play it because it isn't confusing as fuck to learn. That was the big hurdle with MD, streamers would play it, but it wouldn't spread to their friends due the complexity of the game.

more cards = more options for the better player
while the beginner its more cards = more confusion

Im playing rogue solfachord that summon ariseheart and grandsolfachord coolia, im totally fine with maxx c because most of the time my opponent can't out an ariseheart protected by an omni negate, in tcg this is considered toxic for no reason, despite the fact it's the only way for solfachord to win against deck like snake eyes.

I actually did complete the Solomodes
In fact I completely the entire list and brute forced my way through to sun terror without really playing online (probably because I’m generally a single player gamer so no lag is preferable
Doesn’t teach you shit and I only go back to get gems from the daily challenges

It’s so sad that Dkay holds up master duel and duel links and then for IRL you have to join a damn Facebook judge group to get any rulings. It’s absurd.

As someone who was new to playing yugioh, but has YEARS of experience playing other card games digitally. Here is why yugioh isn't the biggest card game out right now and likely never will be.
    1. The most important thing is that yugioh is so wildly complicated and convoluted. They don't have "key words" to simplify the cards like EVERY other card games does. So cards have so much texts for seriously no reason.
    2. Probably do to the game being very complicated and texts being very long, turns last forever. People don't want to sit and do nothing for so long. Newer players won't have hand traps like experienced players so they really will just sit and watch their opponent summon half their extra deck in one turn with zero interaction.
    3. With how complicated this game is when you eventually get to point of "hey its time for me to try an make an actual competitive deck" you quickly get lost on what to do, because you don't know how any deck plays because decks in yugioh don't really fit into the main archetypes that other card games have. Being "control, aggro, mid range and late game". Its basically every deck is both a aggro and control deck. So how does a new player identify which deck seems the most fun. The simple answer is that they don't. You end up going with whatever is the "strongest" "cheapest" or coolest looking cards. Which mind end up playing something you don't actually enjoy, then you might wonder if this is just yugioh or the deck.
For the game to do better and reach a wider audience here is all that needs to happen. Which never will. Cards need key words or simplified text. Will greatly reduce how long turns are for newer players reading every card. The game needs to do better at guiding people to decks that they will enjoy. The only thing i can think of is to use the solo mode for this more. Whenever new archetypes are released to the game that will be meta like snake eyes release a solo mode that walks you through all basic combos of snake eyes. So that if people don't play the TCG can kind of figure out how snake-eyes plays. This will not only help people decide if they want to invest into that deck, but also help them know what to do against that deck requiring less reading, speeding up duels. Instead they release solo modes stuff for decks/archetypes that NO ONE plays and don't matter. So that you learn the ins and outs of fucking six samurai because i guess new players need to know that?

Putting in retro formats and advertising that to players who just wanna play the old way is a sure fire MONEY PRINTING BEHEMOTH.

I refuse to pay money for digital currency in any game. But if they put those formats in as permanent mainstays, I will gladly drop money to pay for gems. And I know that THOUSANDS will follow. It’s literally that easy.

Meh, I spent 13k gems on Red-Eyes secret pack as my first deck, though I obviously wisened up and began to pick Rokket-based Dragon Link.
    Amd of course, Maxx C.
As someone whose last exposure o Yu-Gi-Oh was Power of Chaos game and also myself being a gacha player, Master Duel is godsend. If people bounced off MD then maybe they aren't made for MD.
