    This color promotional film from the fateful (by Winchester standards, anyway) year of 1964 showcases newly released Winchester sporting arms demonstrated by professional hunter David Ommanney (1931 - 2001) and Winchester Western district manager Thomas Lynott (1916 - 2006) as they undertake a five-week long African safari. Winchester firearms shown include a Model 70 bolt-action rifle, a Model 255 .22 Magnum lever-action rife, a Model 1200 pump-action shotgun, a Model 101 over/under shotgun, and a Model 1400 semi-automatic shotgun. Produced by Francis Carter Wood, Jr. Presented by Winchester Western, filmed in East Africa with the cooperation of Ker, Downey &. Selby Safaris, Ltd.

    The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was a prominent American maker of firearms, founded by Oliver Winchester in 1866, and located in New Haven, Connecticut. The company was most well known for its Model 1873 lever-action rifle, marketed as "The Gun That Won the West." By the 1960s, however, the rising cost of skilled labor was making it increasingly unprofitable to produce Winchester's classic designs, and the result was a new line of guns that replaced most of the older products in 1963-1964. The immediate reaction of the shooting press and public was overwhelmingly negative: the popular verdict was that Winchester had sacrificed quality and was no longer considered to be a prestige brand, causing a marked loss of market share. To this day, gun collectors consider "post-’64" Winchesters to be both less desirable and less valuable than their predecessors.
    David Ommanney was a professional hunter who was born in Jalgaon, India in 1931. As a boy he met retired tiger hunter Jim Corbett. Dave joined Lawrence Brown & Lunan Safaris in 1952 as an apprentice and eventually won the East African Professional Hunters Award in 1958. The following year he was seriously wounded by a leopard, with a chunk of flesh torn out of his shoulders and arms.

      Many a good season has been ruined by a stock that got damp and warped/ twisted. Freefloating and bedding have done much to easen that quite a lot. If one add a good laminated woodstock,one get it even better and more stable also.

      The new Winchester is not the old Winchester. The "old" Winchester made all of the guns in New Haven, and were excellent, the new ones are good, but quality was only close for the models that were made at the Belgium plant.

    The hunter does his best line of B.S. to convince you that these new rifles are an "upgrade" over the pre 1964 guns. NOTHING could be further from the truth...... The 1964 Model 70 rifle was demise of gun, as a cheaply made push feed shadow of what it had been. Ruger & Remington quickly began to absorb the sales as both now had a superior product. It wasn't until 1989/90 when they introduced the "pre 64" type action
    That they were able to save the fate of this ionic rifle.

      Exactly right. Although I do have a push feed lightweight model 70, it is not as classy or as dependable to trust in as a controlled feed bolt. Especially if one is going up against dangerous game animals, you want every edge you can get.

      Hogcock. The 64 and later Model 70 is still a better rifle than an M77 or a 700 Remington. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. I own a couple of them. The problem in comparing
      them to anything was the over the top quality of the pre 64, the greatest working man's rifle EVER made.

    Of Model 70’s, I’ve owned Pre-64’s, Post-64’s push feeds, and current CRF Retro models. Mine have been made in Connecticut and South Carolina. Calibers I’ve enjoyed shooting: 223Rem, 257 Roberts, 270Win, 7x57, 7mmRem, 30-06, 300H&H, 300Win, 375H&H, and 458Win.
    Every version of these Model 70’s that I’ve owned has been a great rifle. Regardless of the production era, grade, or caliber, I’ve never owned a Model 70 that wasn’t exceptionally accurate. Some, however, have been a bit harder on the shoulder than others, lol!
    It’s easy to understand why Model 70’s are the standard by which other rifles are measured!
    For me, there’s only Winchester!

    The .264 Winchester Magnum. Man, what a small cannon that is! Too bad it never really caught on because it couldn't beat the slightly older 7 mm Remington Magnum. It was also overbore, which means it used more powder than normally used for the bore diameter. This shortened barrel life. Not a big deal, because this type of rifle was not shot much outside of hunting. But you can see from the video that it packed a considerable wallop.

    My pre 64 is no more accurate or reliable than my post 64. A good push feed rifle is in no way handicapped to a good control round feed rifle. Just my experience, not the regurgitation of gun rag writers and CZcams videos.

    • @ranchodeluxe1
      @ranchodeluxe1 Před rokem

      I think you are the only one who thinks that. I have several of both. MY pre 64 rifles are more accurate, the controlled round feed is vastly superior to the push feed. The early milled receiver is of far better quality. Having said that, the 64-later rifle was still better than the Model 700 and was still an excellent rifle in it's own right. None of them are even close to a Savage 99 in the accuracy department, though. I have three, all sub moa rifles.
