But why would anyone put their child through a *major brain operation* just for them to hear. The deaf community get along fine. I think this invasive procedure is more for the parents sake, to feel they have a "normal" child. It's the same with autistic children. Parents want a "normal" child, so put them in mainstream schools where they get bullied and can't cope. All for the sake of parents and *their* needs
@Paddy O Furniture I agree. Some deaf people have implants and then find they don't "belong" to any group, either hearing or non hearing. Some have even had the implants removed and feel happier in the deaf community. I'm sure the device the little boy was wearing will become smaller when he's an adult due to advances in technology, but he will always have a scar (what if he goes bald in later life,?) Or maybe he will feel dependent on wearing a cap as a teen-ager and feels self conscious? I don't think the parents have thought this through. And yes, doctor's love a challenge to try something, regardless of the lasting effects on patients ☹️

I say this as someone who can hear so I don't know what being deaf is like so maybe I'm wrong but that's my thought on it. If they didn't have the surgery he might be insecure about his deafness in the future too. I think I'd feel insecure and embarrassed.

How nice to see this toddler hearing the first time, I find it wonderful! In many ways I can understand his feeling regarding his terrible silence since I have very bad hearing. I wish him the best and having a lovely father and mother...
So sweet ❤️. My dad started losing his hearing in his late 40’s (Air-force Jets/ Navigator). He slowly withdrew from the family which lasted for over a decade until when in his 60’s, he had an operation for a cochlear implant. It really changed his life and he began to appreciate life again - he joined a hiking and backpackers club, made new friends and began to really enjoy his retirement. Back then, the receiver was held in like a shirt pocket which was a bit cumbersome but later it magnetically attached to a metal plate inserted in the skull positioned behind the ear. Thank you for all the amazing people who make it possible for people like this darling boy able to hear, opening up so much of the world to him!
I'm profoundly deaf myself, but, when I see others get the hearing implants & hear for the first time, I cry with joy & relief for others, & I'm happy for them. I know God helps a lot of deaf people, when the time is right.
@@mickeywicked478 Sorry.. I'm happy for others, who get the opportunity to get Implants to hear.. but, an implant won't work for me. My cochlears have been severely damaged. It's permanent, with me. But, that doesn't stop me from being glad for other deaf people, who are able to get an operation to hear.
Oh how precious my daughter was legally blind God Bless the Drs for trying all I had was prayer 🙏 for my daughter to be able to graduate from schools down she has ive did all I could to prepare her for life without me and get her to understand that she could do anything that anyone else can just find another way I succeeded she doesn’t let anything stop her climbs mountains, swims like a fish , speaks up for herself cooks,writes, novels, raised two sons . She’s amazing and I’m very thankful for her ability to adapt an adjust.

Marty W I agree man, although my son is not deaf, he is 3 and autistic, when he realizes or learns something for the first time he does the same thing, same facial features and hand movements, could watch this all day and it would still bring joy to my heart

If your son is deaf why not learn sign language and teach him sign language? Speaking and hearing is not needed to communicate. We deaf people should be proud to be deaf.

He will have a whole deaf community behind him, as will his mother. Speech therapy for deaf children can be traumatic. It is unnecessary if it is onky for the mother to hear his voice and not for him. He still won't be able to hear her voice. Not voicing does not make someone an idiot. Read "deaf again" by Mark Drolsbough or do some research to learn more about deaf people. We don't need to speak for you...That doesn't make us idiots. Learn sign and we can all communicate with each other. We shouldn't have to speak to make it easier for you or for you not to call us idiots. I am proud to be deaf. Alicat 72 exactly I would have been dead of appendicitis at 13 or scarlet fever in 4th grade. We are so lucky and blessed to have heat and air and clean running water. And toilets. So many things, even the computer teaches you things you would spend days looking up in the old way of the Dewey decimal system when you write a paper for school or rewatched something, now it is here at our fingertips.
Back a hundred years ago their weren't nearly as many illness as their are today. All the new chemicals in the air, drugs and vaccines solve one problem but create another. New illnesses and diseases are discovered each year. Back then, people wouldn't need life altering surgeries because there were almost no internal problems, people weren't born deaf or blind. The world is NOT better than it was a hundred years ago. In fact, it keeps getting worse. So yes, the people who say they would rather live a hundred years ago SHOULD want to.

You say there were “no internal problems” with people in eras before ours? Wrong, wrong, wrong! The diseases we have now were all present then, except life expectancy was shorter in previous eras. Also, no antibiotics back then, either, so a tooth infection or a cut on your foot could go septic, and you would die. Also, diseases like Thphoid fever, malaria, Yellow fever were rampant and killed thousands every year. And infant mortality rates were bad, too. And these comments are just the top of the iceberg when it comes to death in warmer eras. Today is a good time to be alive, as crazy as the world is.

He doesn't understand where the voice of his father comes from. I can't even begin to imagine how his brain in this moment is processing sound. It would be for us as we suddenly were able to finely perceive gravitational waves. Probably in the beginning it would just feel like a random and meaningless "sensation" which would slowly take form and make sense as time passes.
Indeed. a world without sound is a world without speech. He has depended on his vision up to now so the sensation of sound wouldn't have any meaning to him at first. You can see him trying to relate what he is sensing through his hearing to his sign language signs which he has learned previously. It would take even longer to realize that he can make those same sensations himself.
It's only really possible to repair missing senses (or in the future - potentially adding new superhuman ones) at this early stage of development when the brain is still plastic and willing to adapt to basically anything. Later on it doesn't really help to fix the missing input because the brain can't interpret the signals into anything useful. Or at the very least it would many years of training to get to a basic level - like perhaps avoiding obstacles. But the inverse is true too... and it is very likely that sufficiently young mind would readily accept sensing location, magnetic fields, radiowaves ect. just as any normal person would accept and adapt to hearing. One thing that immediately comes to mind is bypassing the language barrier entirely and have a little implant chip let you brain talk to other brains wirelessly. Not like a radio (even if that would be cool on it's own) but without the need to encode/decode thoughts into flawed and limited human language. That is well within our technical capabilities to do right now with relative ease. Of course - the ethical implications of performing experimental and un-needed brain-surgery on a baby aren't nearly as simple... Kind of makes me sad because while there will no doubt be true brain-computer neural interfaces within my lifetime I probably won't get to participate in that revolution directly :P

If it weren’t, people who have had a stroke would never be able to recover. While the brains of younger people are more susceptible to change because they are still developing, adult brains can change too.
@@bed2000 True - but the difference between a toddler and an adult is rather extreme. There are also different types of plasticity, and some aspects are merely weakened while others are almost lost completely. I'm not going to pretend to be a neuro-scientist here, but from my limited understanding of the topic very young and growing minds are eager to grow new neural connections - somewhat at random. That results in a very interconnected but also messy, "noisy" and inefficient network. Later on most these connections get pruned down to the ones the brain ends up using the most until in early adulthood your brain is more or less "finished" and has the final configuration it will use from then. Learning, storing memories and re-training after a stroke I believe has more to do with "reprogramming" the way signals are sent inside the existing network moreso than growing net synapses. I think that still happens to some extent, but nowhere to the same degree. I think if you wanted to implant a chip to an adult brain you'd have to smartly pick existing synapses in the right area and physically connect them to the chip In a baby you could almost just "jam it in there" in the appropriate brainstructure and the brain would grow the connections naturally. A gross oversimplification of course - but I hope it illustrates what I meant :) Sorry for rambling - but it's just a very interesting topic.
The aha moment is priceless. Imagine you were given a sense you did not have. The second moment where the kid has too much he cannot comprehend and does not know what to do, where to run is also interesting. Let us try to discover as many aha moments with the current wonderful senses. Maybe the video shows we worry too much about money, jobs, traffic, phones, facebook, exgirlfriends, politics... and take basic yet valuable things for granted.
He has learned what things mean through sign language. But now he is going to have to learn the sounds that go with the signs to be able to understand spoken language. Very amazing. You can see in the video the dad is still signing whilst vocalising what he's saying to help him to understand what he's hearing x

Hearing sucks. It takes a long while to get used to hearing when you’re deaf for most your life. I couldn’t stand the sound of the wind with the birds or my clothing I just ended up taking it off the hearing aid. But I’m glad it worked for baby boy. I think I was to old.
Operation Home-Less I’ve often wondered about this. If a person has never heard anything, then suddenly does, I imagine it would be frightening and overwhelming. A child adapts easily, but an adult, not so much.

Parents want a "normal" child, so they make them suffer in mainstream schools where they're behind, where special ed teachers have to be brought in anyway especially to teach them in separate lessons. Autistic children do better in special ed schools. I know this because we have 4 autistic children in our family. What parents want isn't always what the child needs. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if this boy asks for that device to be detached when he's a teen-ager. He'll be left with the scars though, and they'll be very noticeable in later life. Let's see what the outcome of this is before we praise it. A lot of deaf people revert back to unhearing by choice. Thumbs down.

My fabulous, kind ear doctor, John House, invented the cochlear implant. What a compassionate, selfless man he was. I saw him for a minor ear disorder when he practiced in Newport Beach, and I knew I was sitting in the presence of greatness. Humility and caring marked his style. How nice to see this toddler hearing the first time, I find it wonderful! In many ways I can understand his feeling regarding his terrible silence since I have very bad hearing. I wish him the best and having a lovely father and mother...
So sweet ❤️. My dad started losing his hearing in his late 40’s (Air-force Jets/ Navigator). He slowly withdrew from the family which lasted for over a decade until when in his 60’s, he had an operation for a cochlear implant. It really changed his life and he began to appreciate life again - he joined a hiking and backpackers club, made new friends and began to really enjoy his retirement. Back then, the receiver was held in like a shirt pocket which was a bit cumbersome but later it magnetically attached to a metal plate inserted in the skull positioned behind the ear. Thank you for all the amazing people who make it possible for people like this darling boy able to hear, opening up so much of the world to him!

But, that doesn't stop me from being glad for other deaf people, who are able to get an operation to hear.

Oh how precious my daughter was legally blind God Bless the Drs for trying all I had was prayer 🙏 for my daughter to be able to graduate from schools down she has ive did all I could to prepare her for life without me and get her to understand that she could do anything that anyone else can just find another way I succeeded she doesn’t let anything stop her climbs mountains, swims like a fish , speaks up for herself cooks,writes, novels, raised two sons . She’s amazing and I’m very thankful for her ability to adapt an adjust.

Marty W I agree man, although my son is not deaf, he is 3 and autistic, when he realizes or learns something for the first time he does the same thing, same facial features and hand movements, could watch this all day and it would still bring joy to my heart

If your son is deaf why not learn sign language and teach him sign language? Speaking and hearing is not needed to communicate. We deaf people should be proud to be deaf.

He will have a whole deaf community behind him, as will his mother. Speech therapy for deaf children can be traumatic. It is unnecessary if it is onky for the mother to hear his voice and not for him. He still won't be able to hear her voice. Not voicing does not make someone an idiot. Read "deaf again" by Mark Drolsbough or do some research to learn more about deaf people. We don't need to speak for you...That doesn't make us idiots. Learn sign and we can all communicate with each other. We shouldn't have to speak to make it easier for you or for you not to call us idiots. I am proud to be deaf. I know lots of people with all types of disabilities who are proud of it, of course not all are... but you saying "nobody is proud of disability" is an inaccurate statement. Now, though, deaf is not a disability. We are not disabled and can do everything you can do... and everyone I know in the deaf community is proud to be deaf, even those who went deaf later in life. And if they aren't proud of it they should be because being socialized into thinking something is wrong with them is cruel and it isn't true. Being proud of who you are and the what differences you have from the mainstream is not idiotic.

Sweet story, and people who say they would rather go back and live a hundred years ago have never had a life altering surgery. Those of us who have know this is a good time to be alive.
Alicat 72 exactly I would have been dead of appendicitis at 13 or scarlet fever in 4th grade. We are so lucky and blessed to have heat and air and clean running water. And toilets. So many things, even the computer teaches you things you would spend days looking up in the old way of the Dewey decimal system when you write a paper for school or rewatched something, now it is here at our fingertips.
Back a hundred years ago their weren't nearly as many illness as their are today. All the new chemicals in the air, drugs and vaccines solve one problem but create another. New illnesses and diseases are discovered each year. Back then, people wouldn't need life altering surgeries because there were almost no internal problems, people weren't born deaf or blind. The world is NOT better than it was a hundred years ago. In fact, it keeps getting worse. So yes, the people who say they would rather live a hundred years ago SHOULD want to.
Just Jokes There are so many factual errors in your comment, I don’t even know where to begin. So I’ll just say this: Believe me, life is better now than most any other time in recorded history. You say there were “no internal problems” with people in eras before ours? Wrong, wrong, wrong! The diseases we have now were all present then, except life expectancy was shorter in previous eras. Also, no antibiotics back then, either, so a tooth infection or a cut on your foot could go septic, and you would die. Also, diseases like Thphoid fever, malaria, Yellow fever were rampant and killed thousands every year. And infant mortality rates were bad, too.
And these comments are just the top of the iceberg when it comes to death in warmer eras.
Today is a good time to be alive, as crazy as the world is.

He doesn't understand where the voice of his father comes from. I can't even begin to imagine how his brain in this moment is processing sound.
It would be for us as we suddenly were able to finely perceive gravitational waves. Probably in the beginning it would just feel like a random and meaningless "sensation" which would slowly take form and make sense as time passes.
Indeed. a world without sound is a world without speech. He has depended on his vision up to now so the sensation of sound wouldn't have any meaning to him at first. You can see him trying to relate what he is sensing through his hearing to his sign language signs which he has learned previously. It would take even longer to realize that he can make those same sensations himself.
It's only really possible to repair missing senses (or in the future - potentially adding new superhuman ones) at this early stage of development when the brain is still plastic and willing to adapt to basically anything. Later on it doesn't really help to fix the missing input because the brain can't interpret the signals into anything useful. Or at the very least it would many years of training to get to a basic level - like perhaps avoiding obstacles. But the inverse is true too... and it is very likely that sufficiently young mind would readily accept sensing location, magnetic fields, radiowaves ect. just as any normal person would accept and adapt to hearing.
One thing that immediately comes to mind is bypassing the language barrier entirely and have a little implant chip let you brain talk to other brains wirelessly. Not like a radio (even if that would be cool on it's own) but without the need to encode/decode thoughts into flawed and limited human language. That is well within our technical capabilities to do right now with relative ease. Of course - the ethical implications of performing experimental and un-needed brain-surgery on a baby aren't nearly as simple...
Kind of makes me sad because while there will no doubt be true brain-computer neural interfaces within my lifetime I probably won't get to participate in that revolution directly :P

If it weren’t, people who have had a stroke would never be able to recover. While the brains of younger people are more susceptible to change because they are still developing, adult brains can change too.
@@bed2000 True - but the difference between a toddler and an adult is rather extreme. There are also different types of plasticity, and some aspects are merely weakened while others are almost lost completely.
I'm not going to pretend to be a neuro-scientist here, but from my limited understanding of the topic very young and growing minds are eager to grow new neural connections - somewhat at random. That results in a very interconnected but also messy, "noisy" and inefficient network. Later on most these connections get pruned down to the ones the brain ends up using the most until in early adulthood your brain is more or less "finished" and has the final configuration it will use from then.
Learning, storing memories and re-training after a stroke I believe has more to do with "reprogramming" the way signals are sent inside the existing network moreso than growing net synapses. I think that still happens to some extent, but nowhere to the same degree. I think if you wanted to implant a chip to an adult brain you'd have to smartly pick existing synapses in the right area and physically connect them to the chip In a baby you could almost just "jam it in there" in the appropriate brainstructure and the brain would grow the connections naturally. A gross oversimplification of course - but I hope it illustrates what I meant :)

Hearing sucks. It takes a long while to get used to hearing when you’re deaf for most your life. I couldn’t stand the sound of the wind with the birds or my clothing I just ended up taking it off the hearing aid. But I’m glad it worked for baby boy. I think I was to old.

The surgery hadn't been done before, but the surgeons thought it was ok to practice on a little child??
The deaf community get along extremely well, you do know that? But now this little boy has to wear that clunky chunky gadget attached to his skull, and the parents think he's going to blend in ?
It's the same with autistic children. Parents want a "normal" child, so they make them suffer in mainstream schools where they're behind, where special ed teachers have to be brought in anyway especially to teach them in separate lessons. Autistic children do better in special ed schools. I know this because we have 4 autistic children in our family.
What parents want isn't always what the child needs. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if this boy asks for that device to be detached when he's a teen-ager. He'll be left with the scars though, and they'll be very noticeable in later life.
Let's see what the outcome of this is before we praise it. A lot of deaf people revert back to unhearing by choice.

Truck Taxi some surgery’s are like McDonald’s making pancakes nowadays. I had my eyes removed and turned around and had all the muscles cut and shortened. I was scared as hell but it worked out perfect making me love cameras now.

My fabulous, kind ear doctor, John House, invented the cochlear implant. What a compassionate, selfless man he was. I saw him for a minor ear disorder when he practiced in Newport Beach, and I knew I was sitting in the presence of greatness. Humility and caring marked his style. He gave the gift of hearing our beautiful world to so many! A true Prince among men. Thank you, Dr. House!
