Back in 80s and early 90s the dunk contest was used to help make you a household name. Without all the media we have now it was harder to be known. It was the drunk contests that boosted names like MJ (before the rings) & Nique. Even Vince Carter name got a major boost from the dunk contest. And Names like Spudd Webb, Dee Brown, Larry Nance, Isiah Rider, would've just been average NBA Joe's. Nowadays guys names are bigger than their game almost immediately. That's why big names aren't as eager to participate.

Even Sampson knew he could not win the competition but he thought was a competent dunker and he just wanted to compete. Lebron has been in the league for 17 years, not once has he entered the dunk contest. To me, that shows he is not a true competitor. MJ lost a dunk contest but that made him hungrier to win it.

what many people may not realize is that, yes, while today's dunkers have the benefit of learning from the past and past mistakes, SO DO CAMERAMEN.
If 1984 videographers could have known to implement this era's filming techniques (low & sweeping angles, wider MM, subtle movement on pans, etc) and had access to modern HD cameras... dunks like 8:38 would look far, far more impressive.
      FAR more impressive.
What today's advanced videography techniques and technologies can do might surprise you.
Case in point: there is a (likely accidental & for some reason extremely rare) camera angle of Michael Jordan's 88 dunk from the FT line - it's from behind and to the left; strikingly similar to several famous views of Vince Carter's dunks in 2000.
Honestly, it seriously looks absolutely UNREAL. Unreal by any dunk contest's standards. And I'm not saying this as some MJ nut hugger.
Today's contestants have the advantage of history to assess what works and what _doesn't work._ But don't forget, the guys & gals holding the cameras have the same advantage.
If you think this comment is reaching, it only goes to show the magic of modern cinema.
Try YT searching 'FT line dunk rare angle' or something like that. Cheers!
