  • Ukraine's defence minister has told the Times the country is massing a million-strong fighting force equipped with western weapons to recover its southern territory from Russia. In his first interview with a British newspaper since the invasion began, Oleksii Reznikov said President Zelensky had ordered Ukraine’s military to retake occupied coastal areas which are vital to the nation's economy.
We spoke to the Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko who told me why her country is increasing the size of its military.

Smart. Getting a huge army retrained and properly equipped takes time. So many thought Ukraine wouldn't last this long, fortunately there were people behind the scenes with enough belief to play the long game.
Those Azov heroes in Marriupol, and all the defenders in Severodonetsk, have done an incredible job slowing Russia down and buying time. I hope they get relief as soon as possible. They deserve it.

You do realize that the Azov division was allied to Moscow before Russia annexed Crimea don't you?
But even there the Right-wing neo-nazis were only a small percentage.
But do you even know what a fascist is?
Who is it that started a war of conquest?
Who is it that made it against their own law to even calm this a war?
Who was it that shut down and arrested any journalist who dared speak the truth?
Who was it who poisoned his political enemies?
Who was it that ordered the jailing of peaceful protesters for up to 10 years?
Whose people are terrified to even answer questions about this war on their own city streets?
Who was it who ordered the wholesale destruction of entire cites?
Who was it who threatens to use nuclear weapons if he didn’t get his way?
Russia is a fascist state in the literal sense. That isn’t opinion. It’s a fact based on their actions. Even now, Putin wants to ditch the title of President and become officially the Ruler. That’s from his own government.
Putin changed the Russian constitution to allow him to be Ruler for life.
I could go on, so don’t try to point to a faction of a mercenary group that was resisting Russian imperialism as an excused to redefine the truth.
But, of course redefining the truth is a hallmark of a fascist regime, isn’t it.

The western military industrial complex needs to spool up faster. So many countries are offering money to Ukraine, but there are no weapons to buy. Everything is about supply and demand, there is too much money chasing too few goods, the prices are inflated. This is no way to equip an army and win a war. Governments need to motivate their weapons manufacturers to do more, offer them long term contracts at reasonable prices. This way the private sector can plan industrial plants and employee hiring.

You can be there are a lot of people who stood back wondering what was going to happen. There are plenty of 60 year olds capable of fighting. Folks in the West know this - a cursory inspection of the populations demonstrates that. It is time to push Russia back to its own territory because they have no good intentions toward NATO or Ukraine, or any other country still wondering if they need to be associated with NATO.

It seems a bit funny in the comments that some commentors seem to take this as Ukraine suddenly having a 1 million army of very basicly trained new army, where as I understand it, the new recruits are to be added to the existing trained veteran army as they are trained up, with more over time to a total of 1 million standing army, which means that at no time will the existing army ever get weaker than it is at present, and at present it is holding its ground against Russia, and Russia seems to be struggling to mobilize,,

No, you are exactly right it’ll just be supplementing current force. Which is why I hate that implication in their phrasing, as if all the current veterans won’t keep fighting and helping rapidly train new recruits

Good luck supplying the million extra men atleast 30 million rounds will be needed to give each soldier a single magazine. Also you will need more trucks since Ukraine troops have run out on the frontline and have to use civilian vehicles. As for Russia they aren’t even using a quarter of their standing army why would they need to mobilise. Ukraine is also taking upto a 1000 casualties a day and is running out of trained men and is relying on farmers and tradesmen to fill the ranks.

@@shannonfritz9145 not really true. You're counting conscripts, who can't be used and are poorly trained and equipped. I doubt they would be resorting to using prisoners if they weren't short of manpower.

@@shannonfritz9145 30 million rounds is not a problem.
two private companies (ammo inc, vista outdoors) recently donated 2 million rounds between them.
u.s. donated 40 million small arms rounds.
various e.u. countries combined, around another 10 million.
this is all with relatively short notice.
Ukraine can now be considered ungovernable to a colonial force. partisans will be present in high numbers everywhere.

Invaded in 2014… 3-4 months of threat of total annihilation as a state… and still talking about conscription.
