  • “No, we’re not listened to. I’m the Olympic and world champion and it’s like my medals don’t even matter.”
Miltiádis Tentóglou says World Athletics don’t respect athletes and that the governing body haven’t listened to them.
The now double world indoor long jump champion says the take-off zone concept is so bad it’s funny and that it removes all the skill from the long jump.

Wow! I really hope Seb Coe sees this interview. Tentoglou not holding back at all in his thoughts about the planned possible changes to his event, and quite right too. This one interview alone should be sufficient to see the idea abandoned. When the best long jumper in the world right now says he will walk away from the event if it is changed, World Athletics really have to sit up and take notice!

Not the first long jumper to express their dismay with this new idea. Really makes you wonder when this dialogue with athletes happened.'

I just wish World Athletics would stop trying to make the sport into something it isn't. It doesn't need gimmicks, it doesn't need celebrities, it doesn't need bombastic characters. The attraction of athletics for me is the raw nature of it that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

I watched Seb Coe at the press conference talk about how the athletes had been consulted.
Well, the reigning Olympic, World Outdoor, World Indoor and European champion has not even been consulted. In my humble opinion, this is either a very serious oversight on behalf of World Atheltics or blatent disrespect.
It seems none of the top pro jumpers like it, doesnt that send a message to World Athletics?
When they all quit and you only have the 2nd rate jumpers left, who's gonna tune in at all?
Idea: limit to 8 entries, after 3 jumps only 5 go through. That'll speed it up.

Congratulations Milto Tentoglou. In my opinion athletes have to be asked before any changes because they ARE the essential factors of athletics. Συγχαρητήρια Μίλτο Τεντόγλου για το ήθος και τον χαρακτήρα σου!

Miltiadis Tentoglou! Always brave to state what his thoughts are ...
By the way, does anybody know what are the "new jumping boards" he mentions towards the end of this interview?

he spoke the language of truth. BTW hes not ungrateful. At his level he has to compete his own self and be better. He did not achieved this yesterday even though he won the first position. I understand him cuz athletes at that level are very hard on themselves

its hard to look back now over the years the board was a big part of the game, it was a definite skill to hit it just right and the best jumpers were great at it, it did suck if some guy out jumped you by inches but couldn't hit the board cause you knew it was only a matter of time but still it was a finely measured skill for the athlete to get perfect. All the same I do understand a zone approach cause if a guy looses by millimeters due to the board it's a drag, we are trying to see how far a human can jump not really how precise they can take-off but that is the current rules. I think much of this was created by some of Carl Lewis's jumps that were behind the board limit but actually greater than Beamon's World Record if measured from his takeoff, there are likely many jumps beyond 8.90 like this.

World Athletics is planning to change running too. So you start when you feel like it during a ‘zone’ of time and they just time how long it takes you to run. There will also be a finishing ‘zone’ too so you can just stop when you feel like because a line is too confusing and lots of people dive over the line and fall so a finishing zone is much safer.

He is actually extremely positive and happy, but lately he is mad about the changes that are being pushed without the athletes' opinion. Also, all the athletes jumped under 8,22 which honestly is not that impressive for a world championship, especially for him having won every title before. He is not neurotypical so he doesn't filter what he says. We love him for it.
